The wardrobe thread and a recent trip made me think of this question.
Maybe I'm weird but I really don't find bathing suits comfortable. I love going to the beach but I never swim in the ocean. I just walk along the edge. I rarely get into the pool. So every year, I take two swimsuits with me but seldom wear them. I might put one on for one day. We just returned from our annual trip. This year, I wore an old bathing suit top (with regular shorts) because it is stretched out and more comfortable than wearing a bra. It's not so stretched out I'm worried about if falling down.
Mostly I just wear knit shorts and a top. What about you?

I do but I like to swim/dip in the pool or sea quite a lot.

Depends. Sometimes I like to get in the water and sometimes I don’t.

I'm a beach/pool gal and love to lounge and read, always in a suit as well as dip in the pool or ocean. I own about 4 for lounging, and always rotate in a new one each year and discard the one(s) that have faded or stretched out. All of my suits are bikinis, although I usually keep a tankini top on hand for times when I know I might need more modest wear. I also own a one-piece suit for swimming laps

It would be weird for me not to - even if I don't plan on getting in.

When I realized I had 3 swimsuits that I'd never worn (purchased in different years, at different sizes), I realized I was just not going to wear one maybe ever again.
I love walking and wading at the beach. I am a competent swimmer, but I don't love pools. I just really don't have need of a swimsuit.

My swimsuits aren't really 'swimsuits' but rather a bikini top with swim capris. This is what I prefer under my wetsuit when diving and I make them multitask for the rare occasion that I actually go to the beach. I usually cover the whole thing with a long sleeved tshirt or rash guard and a hat as I sunburn so easily and the sun also brings my rosacea out.
ETA: thanks for the motivation; I just bought more swim capris and rashguards for an upcoming trip in November!

I wear a swimsuit and generally get in the water a time or two while on the beach. Same for the pool.
If I go to the beach to walk or view the sunset, I may be in regular clothes. But if I’m going for a “beach day,” then I’m definitely in a swimsuit.

Depends on the beach.
A warm sunny beach in Spain? In my bikini. A cold, windy beach in norther CA? In my fleece haha.

We go away most winters to the beach but I don't go in much, the pool or ocean. I always have my bathing suit on just in case. If we're going for a long walk on the beach, I wear shorts and a tank top. I like walking along the water's edge and splashing through.

No. Our beaches are cold and often windy or foggy. Here you see people in hoodies, coats, and hats on the beach.

If we are going there for the day, with blankets, umbrella, food, etc. then yes because I’ll probably jump in the water. Definitely yes at a swimming pool because I love to get into a swimming pool. If we are going to the beach to just stroll around, then no.

When we go to the beach it's hot and when it's hot I'm definitely getting in the water so yes, I always wear a swimsuit. We also go to the lake and again, it's hot and yes, I"m going to swim so I'm in a swimsuit.
If we went and it wasn't hot as blazes out, I'd most likely still wear a swimsuit so that I could get some sun on my body. I don't like to tan, but I do enjoy feeling the sun on my arms and legs (again, when it's not too hot out!).

I'm not really a beach person -I do love walking along New England beaches in the fall/winter but that's obviously not swimming weather. On the rare occasion I go to the beach here (and it's been years), yes I would wear a swimsuit
I love swimming but prefer pools and I'm sad I haven't had the opportunity to swim since pre-Covid. I will need to swimsuit shop before my next opportunity because my suit doesn't fit (tankini top/skirted bottoms) - as I lost some more weight since I bought it

I love the beach. I don't love the gulf/ocean water. If we're hanging out on the beach for awhile, I do wear a swimsuit. If we're just taking a walk, I wear shorts and t-shirt.
Pools are another story. If we're staying somewhere with a pool, we spend a lot of time in it. So yes, I do wear a swimsuit in that situation.
We have a place on the beach and I wear swimsuits down there. If we're cruising and going on a beach-related excursion, I wear a swimsuit.
So...sometimes. But always if I'm going to be near a pool.

I definitely wear swimsuits - I pretty much live in them when we're on a beach vacation. I have several bikinis and a couple tankinis and then have a couple more board short style if I'll be paddle boarding or otherwise want more coverage and don't want to worry about them riding up. We were never really beach people, but when we discovered scuba diving and teenagers we found them to be perfect vacations for family time with a little something to do and a lot of time being lazy.

We do a beach vacation somewhere warm - Greece, Italy, Malta etc - at least every second year. When we are there, we are beside the pool or on the beach nearly everyday, so I will put on a swimsuit after breakfast (sometimes even before) and a coverup and lounge by the pool all day. I will go into the water often - mainly for short periods, like 10 minutes, but I am in and out each hour. So yes, I wear a swimsuit as it is most practical to just keep wearing it all day. I will shower and change before dinner, but for lunch we will often eat poolside, so just slip on my coverup.

If I go to the beach, it's not to swim.......it's to walk, wander, sit, enjoy the scenery. I will not go in the water past my ankles. It's a fear of mine. Jaws is out there, irrational but completely real fear.
I really don't like being on the water at all. I will and have in the past done a lake or river, not for swimming but for tubing, boating, canoeing, peddle boats, etc... (I have anxiety the whole time) but I would NEVER do that on an ocean. I would NEVER go on a ocean cruise, that would put my fear and anxiety over the edge.
I wear sundresses or capris and and a tank top.
I will only swim in pools, where I can see what's underneath me and around me. Then I wear a one piece swimsuit with a built in skirt.

Long ago when staying at my uncle's on LBI it depended on time of day and what our plans were. We would walk on the beach any time from early morning until bed time... early or late was not time for swimming...

We went on our (delayed) beach honeymoon last week, and, other than dressing up at night, I stayed in bathing suits and cute coverups most of the trip. I brought 3 tankinis and mixed and matched all week. I love being in the water - pool or beach - so I have to be ready!

Yes I do. I don't like how I look but I do it anyway. A tankini with swim shorts for the bottoms.

I’m currently at the beach - and all I’ve packed is bikinis, coverups and dresses for dinner. If I don’t get in the ocean then I get in the pool or just lounge around. Our villa has a rooftop patio so I e spent most of this past week up there in lounge chairs wearing a swimsuit with a book.

I do not. The main reason is that I burn VERY easily. So I always wear long shorts that are made of swimsuit-type material, and one of those long-sleeved sun block shirts. I will go in the ocean if it's warm enough or if my kids drag me in. lol. But this way I'm not likely to get burned (I can burn even with sunscreen).

If I plan to go swimming, I wear a swimsuit.. pool or beach.. that said.. I never plan to swim at our local sf beaches, as they are dangerous and the water is very cold. I love to swim --pools, salt water, lakes, ..all good to me. I feel comfortable in a canoe, rowboat, sailboat or kayak.
so it depends...
