I was just browsing SB generations and looking at their new products. It was the same thing. Winter, home, and fall. I mean...it hasn't changed. Is that what we are sb'ing? home? I want to scrap our Taylor swift concert. There have to be thousands that want to do that. Why not gear some papers and themes towards that? or concerts in general, if they don't want to be too specific. It seems like they are missing out on lots of new opportunities. or is it just me?

I agree that they seem out of touch. I would love a concert theme, or more music papers in general. We love to go to concerts, my daughter sings a lot and my son is learning guitar...music is a big part of our lives.
I would also love to see travel lines closer to location. Like European travel or USA travel...instead of generic travel. I think what they are trying to do is reach a larger demographic by having lines so generic but then because they are so generic a lot of us don't buy because it is the same as last years fall or winter line...

I think scrapbook companies make what they think will sell and what has proven to sell in the past - not just to consumers but to the retailers
Scrapbooking is a much less popular hobby than it once was and scrapbookers like us here aren't the main demographic for most companies - we want new and different and uptodate and so on. But the average scrapbooker is looking for easy themes - that work for a wedding or a trip or their kids/grandkids (and typically the younger end for that not teens) - and because most of them are scrapping a specific project (a trip or event), they aren't necessarily looking for new, new, new because it's all new to them. And for the most part - scrapbook companies are selling to those new-ish scrapbookers not the long-term scrapbookers. Echo Park, Doodlebug, Photoplay, AC...that's their market.
There are companies that are the exception but ime they often gear their collections to the more artsy than the themed - 49 & Market, Cocoa Vanilla, VB...
Reminisce is the main themed company that seems to market to more niche theme scrappers - their Musicality Collection Kit might work for you

Hobbies in general - I like to scrap about what my people are into in their down time. There was a surge of craft and reading supplies for a while, but where's the gaming, pickleball, working out, dog park, bunco, doomscrolling, binge watching, etc.

A concert/music themed collection would be fantastic. My son played in the band his 7th and 8th grade years (not marching band, though), and finding band-themed collections is tough.
I find a lot of collections are "near misses" for me. Close to what I can use, but not exact, so I end up modifying the products or only using a portion of what is offered.
Right now, I would love a "teen life" collection that works with my current teens (I have a 17-year-old, 15-year-old, and 14-year-old at home). I would also like a not-so-cutesy dog collection (bonus points for images of a Great Dane), and a modern baking line (Instant Pot, charcuterie board, dinner party themes).

I loved that they did a Barbie collection because of the new Barbie movie! |

Yes I think they are. I recently created a mini album and used a variety of word stickers. I was unpleasantly surprised by how repetitive and pointless so many of the words were while useful words and phrases were harder to find.
How many times can something be splendid and/or magical?
I don’t like the overly syrupy sweet sentiments on ephemera either.

Definitely out of touch. But consider where many of the biggest scrap companies are located, Utah. Big families, stereotypical gender roles and SAH moms. That’s what they are geared toward.
I’m tired of the lack of thought and research that goes into lines. Just about every Cello paper/collection I can find has treble clef on it. The cello is a bass clef instrument. Lines that include tribe, teepees or dream catchers. Summer lines that include surf boards, palm trees, and ocean references…I live in Minnesota and vacation in the woods on a lake. No surfing. I want pontoon boats, paddle boards, etc. Cats are automatically female. Dogs automatically make. Anything cooking related is pink and feminine. My son LOVES to cook.

I think they always have been a little lazy and just gone after the average, while kids are in the home, type scrapper. Which does not make sense because they are not even carried in big box stores, etc. You really have to go out of your way to get most lines out there, so you'd think they'd be interested in the long-time scrapper with different lifestyles. I've never had much in the way of urban, city life, type scrapbook supplies, for instance. It's like if you don't live rurally, vacation in the tropics, have or be a grandma with a big gray bun and sports star kids, you've always been out of luck.
I don't remember what it is, but I have one sheet of paper about rock music with words on it that I cut out and use on all my concert layouts. That one sheet of paper is not going to last me forever. I think I was out of the word "rock" last time I used it. LOL

Some but not all.
I think it's not so much "out of touch". I think it's a combination of >> they are bandwagon followers, they are afraid to go outside the box or take a risk on something different than the usual.
I think many product lines are based on what the company owner(s) or product designers..... like or don't like.
Example: Echo Park >> Definitely stuck in a rut. All their lines look similar. Same colors and same style, every collection.
The one company that I think has variety is Reminisce.
They have many themes, use a variety of colors. They don't follow the trends, they don't jump on bandwagons. They do their own thing.
Even though Reminisces isn't every scrapbookers style or preference......they still have a wide variety.

And I totally agree with the travel lines. How many Route 66 road signs can one possibly use? Even if I do go on that road, I will never use all of the ones in my stash.
And I swear if I see one more Best Trip Ever sentiment I will burn it. How can every trip be the best trip? We had a really great vacation this year but parts of it were stressful. It was by no means the best trip ever.

i think they are focusing towards new scrappers and novice scrappers by presenting very generalized themes. it's probably more cost effective for them. even though there are potentially thousands of people who want Taylor Swift themed stuff, the manufacturers probably want to appeal to hundreds of thousands of buyers instead with more generic and mainstream designs.

I've been searching digital kits more for niche or not the norm themes. I generally don't make 12x12 layouts so printing an 8.5x11 patterned paper works for me.
But yes to the OP, the companies are creating for the general scrapper, not for those of us who've been creating for years and years and have all the general themes.

I think as scrappers who have been there and done that, we are looking for something else. I do love when I find exactly what I need, but I am also pretty good at just creating my own embellishments when necessary. I also think I have so much older stuff that a concert layout using the really old Rockstar pad would be perfect. No too girly though. |

Yes. It's so repetetive, that sometimes I wonder how much effort goes into making a collection anymore. Resize this icon, add a scarf, change the background color one shade darker, they'll never notice it's the same collection from last year!
I have three teenagers and a ten-year-old... I don't use cute anymore.

They do it like I did in the late 90s-early 00s. Photos cut into shapes, bright card stock, tons of ephemera. It very fun to see the next generation printing photos and making an effort to document their lives!! |

It’s why I have learned to rely on my cricut more and more. I get the embellishments, print and cut items, and custom titles, and can create backgrounds that work. I can draw backgrounds that compliment phots using the sketch/draw features. I am using more of my basic printed texture background papers and stamps too. It’s rare that I am buying paper pack these days as they really don’t match how we do things!

I agree . So many lines are the same colors and have the same stickers over and over. And winters are always snowy.
When companies add themes why are the items so retro? There’s a recent thread about school and how a company is using old time one room school desks. Music collections have phonographs and vinyl records. Road trips get paper road maps and old big gas guzzler cars from the 1950s. Etc..
It would also be nice if they added some things reflecting other cultures and religions. Some inclusion and diversity would be nice. How about quinceañeras, parties with Hispanic/Latino foods, Chinese and Vietnamese new year. And so on. They might get more customers if they expanded their niche market. Here in So Cal many of us go to these celebrations and take pictures. This would be a good market to start with.
