I need to move closer to my ds. What areas close to Denver would you recommend? I’m looking for somewhere with affordable housing, or at least as affordable as I can get in that area, low crime, and not just young people as I am 59. Bonus points if there are lots and lots of single age appropriate men 😂

Curious minds want to know:
Will you change your login name here to 'denverscrapper' once you move?

I truly don't know anyplace affordable in the Denver area, but my in-laws lived in Littleton for about 20 years and it was a nice area. My sister currently lives in Fort Collins and they are looking to move closer to Boulder. They can't find any place under $1 million to $1.5 million that doesn't need serious renovations.

I have multiple friends who live in Broomfield and like it. I doubt it would be considered affordable though.
My niece lives in Boulder, which seems to be as expensive as the Bay Area!

I just asked dh and he said a guy he mountain bikes with moved to Northglenn CO from California. They moved because they couldn't afford a house here. Dh said it seemed really close to Denver to him, but geography is not his strong suit - thank you CA geography lessons. 🙄
Hopefully the CO peas will weigh in on my suggestion as all I did was ask dh.

We're also considering moving to Denver in a few years. We think maybe the west side - Westminster, Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Lakewood. Maybe out as far as Golden. DH's parents lived in Westminster around the time we got married and his sister lived in Lakewood, so that's kind of our comfort zone/area of reference. I grew up in Nebraska and definitely don't want to live on the more prairie side to the east.

What price range would you consider? It is ridiculous here. I live in central Denver proper, and could not afford my house now. My parents moved to a new build in Arvada 6 years ago and paid in the low $500K, their house is now worth over $800K. MIL lives in Lakewood, her house would probably sell for $600K. It will be hard to find anything under $500K that is nice in most places along the Front Range.

What about Castle Rock, Monument, or Colorado Springs areas?

Stapleton, which definitely has a new non-racist name that I don't know, has a lot of senior housing. I believe it is supposed to be affordable housing, but don't quote me.

Where is your DS and how often are you going to need to visit? I might be helpful to not have to go through some of the more terrible traffic patterns to get to him - unless it's just a more once a while visiting.

Check north it’s a bit more “affordable”
Brighton is a good town … outside of Denver but close enough to everything.

[b It’s not called Stapleton anymore because of the racist background of Mr. Stapleton.. Northfield is what most people are calling that area now… and it’s super expensive unless you get into the old rundown areas.

He’s not sure what part yet. So I’d like to be within 1 1/2 - 2 hours at the most. Ultimately he wants to move back to fort Collins. Then I will try to move there as well. I’d like to be with like 30-45 minutes. If not next door 😂

She'll be 105 before she could ever save enough to buy a house there, while still paying bills and rent.

If he is interested in ultimately landing in Fort Collins, I'd look at cities/towns up north. A big question you're going to need to answer is how much rural/commute community you're up for as a lot of these areas don't have a real vibrant social scene. I'd get as close to Fort Collins as I could - not sure the market there, but you might be able to buy something at that price point.

I live in Colorado Springs and go to Denver on occasion, so I know areas pretty well, but not an expert because living somewhere and visiting is a whole different story. But I agree with a pp that staying west of I-25 is a good choice, yet getting to close to the mountains will result in higher prices.
Housing no matter where is the pits these days and they keep building. On our news, I will hear a new high end appartment complex is bing built. Okay, nice, but dang-it, what about Joe Average or below. They need to live somewhere beside the street or under the bridge.
I think the New Thread Label is appearing as a bot warning as it appears one posted a ways up thread. They use to bump old threads, so that label was fitting, but the bots seem to be joining the current conversations now.

Stay on the North side. Look at Golden, Longmont, Loveland, Fort Collins, Wellington, Arvada, Thornton, Berthoud. If you possibly can, find something to buy. Rent is so high right now. In your price range it will be a condo or a very small older home, but if you can fix it up over time it will definitely appreciate.

While that is affordable in Colorado, that’s out of my price range. That’s why I think I’ll end up renting something. Hopefully a little house with a yard but I’d be ok in an apartment.

The Denver area is expensive and not just housing. EVERYTHING is expensive in Colorado. While we could/can afford it we chose to sell our home in Parker when DH retired. I know many people have a dream of moving to Colorado (I sure did) but, living there was not the same as visiting. If you are coming from the south you are going to be shocked by the culture and level of service you receive. If you are set on it you need to really evaluate your finances. I know people are saying look at southern WY but, that is even colder, snowier and more windy than CO in the winter.

I just know Colorado Springs and Littleton for housing. Neither is cheap, but I think many places are pretty expensive. Good luck on your search! And almost welcome to the area!
