UGH
I am so pissed.
I am going to have to be a bit vague, and I'm sorry. I'm not necessarily looking for advice, but I do need to vent.
I work for a non profit organization, and as part of my job, I do a lot of writing. I have written most of the brochures and booklets we give to the families we serve. A couple of years ago, thanks to a grant, I wrote a booklet on a very specific topic. We don't sell it; we give it out to people who take (and pay for ) a workshop I teach online about this topic.
That's the background.
Last week, we discovered a new non profit in our city that works with the same population we do. We were very irritated because on their website, they have a lot of information that comes straight from workshops we teach, so we looked, and they have taken our workshops.
This morning, I was looking through their website some more and noticed that one very specific section is literally word for word from the booklet I wrote on this topic. Not paraphrased, but WORD FOR WORD. Some of the words aren’t even mine, they are from a friend who I once taught this workshop with, and I credited her with that part in my booklet I wrote after I got her permission to put it in my booklet.
This organization does not give me or my organization credit for any of this. It looks like it is their work, which pisses me off for more than one reason. The biggest reason is this topic is something I have always dreamed of publishing a real book on, and I have actually been working on doing just that this summer. Now, my work is on someone else’s website.
We have a couple of attorneys on our board of directors, so I am sure they will be able to advise us on what we can or can’t do. It’s not a real published book, but it is our intellectual property.
I don’t know how they thought we would not find this, but man, I am pissed. In case you can’t tell!
10/4 UPDATE: Hi all, thank you so much for your thoughts and kind words. I have a good update! Our board's attorney told our director to start out being nice to them because if we need to get an attorney involved, it would have to be someone other than him because copyright infringement isn't his specialty. We can't really afford that, sooo...my boss wrote them a very nice email, but made it clear that they either need to remove that information or give me credit for it. The were very apologetic, said it was an "oversight." LOL Sure it was! Anyway, at the end of it, it now has my name and my organization. That's all I really wanted was the acknowledgement that it is my work.

That sucks. I'm sure they will get a cease and desist letter from your board attorneys. Grrr! I'm sorry they did that to you without notification or credit.

I do not blame you one bit for being pissed!!! That is seriously not ok.. students get taught that in high school and it follows in college...
Adults most definitely know better!!! They knew they should've asked yalls permission and then quoted!!!

If you have an attorney in your organization I would have them send a letter to the executive of that group to remove all plagiarism from their website.

They knew they should've asked yalls permission and then quoted!!! Exactly! I wouldn't have minded if they would have asked to use it then given me and our organization credit. I don't mind that it's out there, but I hate that it looks like their work and their ideas, when it most definitely is NOT.

I would be hopping mad and as well as a cease and desist letter I would be looking for a public apology and accreditation. I hope it gets sorted swiftly.

Ugh, I would be pissed too! How can this new non-profit hope to help if they can't even do their own work?!!?

Damn, I'd be hopping mad as well. Hopefully the attorneys can get this straightened out quickly, though it will be something you will probably have to monitor regularly, as they've shown who they are.

Wow! I agree with the other posters. I wonder if anyone that attended your presentation will attend theirs and recognize the materials. I volunteered for 20 years for a non-profit in a particular program and was interviewed for our local newspaper, photos included. Years later I googled my name and found one of the pictures of me in a brochure for a University in a different part of the country that was running a similar program. I contacted them immediately and asked where they got the photo and to take it out. I checked a week later and the brochure was taken down.

Hopefully the attorney will be able to advise you what is fair use vs. public domain. Did you have a statement that materials could be used only with permission?

100% you have a right to be pissed.
Reading your post has me seething about a manager I had, who, for YEARS would email me and ask me questions that he should know. Not simple “look here for the answer” type questions, but why certain policies were written the way they were, how to handle certain things within the established environment of care and facilities interactions. It took almost a year for one of my emails to make its way back to me. But without my name anywhere on it. Literally word for word, including a friendly greeting I’d included!!
I started communicating via email on projects a lot more, and also, when I’d reply to him, I always copied one or more other stakeholders. I’d be damned if he’s going to steal my words and thoughts.
He didn’t last very long after I resurrected some emails asking for clarification from some folks, who I knew most likely were the ones who posed the questions to him to begin with.
Anyway, I’m mad for you. That’s just all kinds of wrong.

As an after thought I just was going to ask if you had screen shots and/or printouts of their site?
Credit is excellent, but too bad they did not at first.

It makes my angry just hearing about your work being stolen. I love the update.
I am a genealogist and have had my writings copied and presented as the copiers work. I never mind sharing information such as names, dates or relationships but my thoughts and interpretations of information is not up for stealing.
One woman that hijacked my work and posted it on the Internet as her own was a teacher. I asked her if she would accept work from a student that had copied from another student and presented it as their own. She stammered and stuttered and finally took my work down. By then it had been copied and passed on a number of times.
I finally got smart and now only share with people that I trust.
