I just saw this story on BBC and that they’ve arrested a 16 yr old boy. I’ve never seen this tree IRL but the pics and the interviews of what it meant to people are just lovely and heartbreaking. I hope he is charged criminally and has to pay reparations (not like it can really do much) 😢 www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-66952980

Very sad. I remember the tree from the Robin Hood movie.

5 years ago I stayed in the area near that tree, and it is a treasure that will be missed terribly. I cannot think of a reason that would possess someone, much less a 16 year old, to cut it down.

It's maddening and so sad in equal measure. I just can't fathom the wanton destruction Idiot! Specialists have said shoots may grow from the stump but obviously it won't ever be the same. Shortcut to a few images of the tree and Hadrian's Wall

If this was my kid, I swear he would be planting trees for the next 5 years on top of whatever criminal charges... Such a senseless act!

It hurt my heart too. I wondered whether 16 year olds are allowed to have/use a chainsaw, but I can't find anything saying they can't. But it requires strength, knowledge and training to cut down a tree that size. I can't imagine what was going through that child's head.

The police have just said they have arrested a man in his 60s, wondering if it's a father and son? But still begs the question, why??

It's so sad. So many youths have so little respect for anything. I do think it may have been done out of anger and rage. So many youth have no one to help them though tough times. I'm trying to see the reasoning, but it's just a terrible thing to have happen.

This is horrible! I would bet there was a 4 wheeler involved. Something to get them to the site, get it cut down and get out. Have they said how they found the kid?

That is so sad, and infuriating in equal measure! What goes through the mind of a person who would do this? Was it for notoriety? A bit of a laff? Was it a dare?

Anyone who would do such a thing has a mind and thought process that I will NEVER comprehend. How it would even enter your thoughts to destroy something that has been on earth for 300 years and is admired by many people? His family must be so proud. (eye roll)

It reminds me of this recent story from China. Boggles the mind. BBC A part of China's Great Wall has been severely damaged by construction workers in central Shanxi province, who used an excavator to dig through it. Police say two people are suspected of trying to create a shortcut for their construction work. The two have been detained and the case is under further investigation. The 38-year-old man and 55-year-old woman were working near the affected area, the 32nd Great Wall. They dug a "big gap" by widening an existing cavity of the Great Wall so that their excavator could pass through it. Police say they wanted to reduce the distance they had to travel. Police also stressed that the two caused "irreversible damage to the integrity of the Ming Great Wall and to the safety of the cultural relics". www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-66714547

And now a second man has been arrested - this time a 60yo man. There goes my theory that it was a group of brainless teenagers on the tear or on a dare.

Or will be fined/jailed so severely they wish they were. My DD and I went to China and visited the wall in 2018. I realize this is in a part of the wall that is way up north and not "the wall" as we think of it (portions are like a hill or not as defined as the more popular parts) but it was just... amazing. I joked to my DD, "how do you think they got the wheelbarrow up here?" there were parts that were so steep I was scared to slip coming back down. It reminded me of the moron who carved his and his girlfriends name into the wall of the Colosseum!! Apparently he didn't realise how old it was Link to story This also shocked me and can I tell you how glad I was that it wasn't a dumbass American? bc that was my immediate thought. But seriously, who doesn't know how old it is? I hope they are banned to enter Rome again.

I can't find any more info, but saw he is still in custody and the boy was released on bail. I hope they can do something meaningful with the wood, a bench or something? They said the stump my propogate offshoots, but it would take YEARS for that to grow. I mean, LOOK at how it was just CUT DOWN. I am just so blue to see this.

Apparently he didn't realise how old it was Link to story What a ridiculous excuse! He didn't realize how old the Colosseum was! I don't believe it for a second. He's just upset he got caught. If you watch the video when he's done carving his name and his girlfriend's name you can hear someone else saying "Stupid Ahole" to him.
These types of vandalism infuriate me! This, the tree and the Wall of China. More and more are being reported around the world. People thinking the rules don't apply to them.
I hope for the guy above and the people who cut down the tree their crimes are punished very harshly!

My first thought was, that's an awful big job for a lone 16 year old, even with a chain saw. But the tree is surprisingly smaller than I expected it to be. I was picturing a massive oak or something.
