I hope you are ready for another CARDtober challenge, grammadee and all of you who love to make cards. I am hosting the CARDtober Friday challenges. My theme is "Outside the Box," which means to think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective; creative thinking. Most cards, whether store bought or hand made, are usually a rectangle or a square shape (box like), or sometimes other basic shapes such as an oval or circle. Cards that are different attract attention. So we are going outside the box by making a shaped card. Shaped cards can be made with dies, electronic cutters, or even just with scissors. If you are using one of your larger shaped dies to make a shaped card, make sure that the fold of your card base is a little below one edge of your die, then cut. You will need a separate complete cut of one layer of card stock to cover your base card shape, whatever shape you use. I chose a teapot card, which was a card design that I downloaded from the Silhouette Design Store. It's Design #296773 by Lori Whitlock. I used Graphic 45 Cafe Parisian Collection papers, and fussy cut the roses and pastries from a couple of the sheets to enhance the teapot and teacup. I also popped one of the roses on the front of the card. Today's challenge is to make a shaped card, that is NOT rectangle, square, or other basic shape. The twist is to fussy cut part of the decorations on the card. Have fun with this challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing your creations!  |

Oh, I received dies to make a "bow" card in last weekend's C&CD. I did make one, but it didn't turn out the way I wanted. I'll have to try again this weekend!

Your teapot card is absolutely DARLING, scrapnnana! Love it! The only die that size i have is for a cupcake shaker card Might have to pull that one out again |

That tea cup inside the card is genius! Love it. The tea cup was actually part of the Silhouette file’s design, so I can’t take any credit for that part. All I did was add some pretty paper and fussy cutting. This type of card is really easy for anyone with an electronic cutter. It’s a bit more challenging to do with dies, although I hope it’s not overwhelming. grammadee and anyone with smaller shape dies (that would result in a smaller than standard card), if they aren’t super small, you could make a small card, anyway. Miniature cards are still cards. Later, you can glue the miniature card to a bigger, standard shaped card, or perhaps find some use for a tiny card. I don’t want this challenge to be overly difficult. |

Thanks for the push to try out my little-used poinsettia quilt top die, apologies I took so long to get to it. I started with a simple version that I messed up a little bit, so I had cut a few extra bits left to play with. It morphed into something more complicated than my initial plan with a bonus non-shaped card as an extra. The die is set up to be used off the left edge to make a star/poinsettia shaped card if you want to, and then you can run the stitching die in to create the quilt top pattern. I sandwiched a gold doily circle between the base and the stitched layer to give it more pizzazz. The doily is actually two layers back to back, the gold being single side. I used a heavier card base to make it sturdier since it only rests on the two points. There's a tiny sparkle of gold through the stitching lines on the front  It will need a non standard envelope if I want to keep the doily on the left edge. CARDtober participation is entirely voluntary, and my feelings aren’t hurt if anyone chooses not to participate in this challenge, or any other that I post.
I have been concerned, though, that my challenges may be a bit difficult for some because not everyone has the right tools.
For those who would like to try this challenge (NO pressure!), but don’t have a larger or suitable die or electronic cutter, here is an alternative:
Find an outline of a recognizable shape you like on the internet, print it, and trace it onto folded card stock, with either the left or top of the shape hanging over the folded edge so that part doesn’t cut. Decorate as desired.
If the fold is on the left, it should stand for display. If the fold is on the top, it should also stand, but it may not. Any card can also be displayed on a small easel (available at Dollar Tree if you have one near you).
For those on a team, there is usually a big bonus for those who complete all 31 card challenges. If anyone participating is on a team, I don’t want you unable to complete a challenge or miss out on those extra bonus points just because you don’t have the right tools.
Again, participation is not required, and I don’t want anyone to feel pressured, but for those who would like to try but lack the tools, this gives you an “old school” option.
