A friend and I were talking shoes this evening, and reminiscing about pairs we loved. I have always loved good shoes, and several stand out in my memories. Red patent leather courts that were so elegant. Beige desert boots (don’t know if that name is a British term) in a fine buttery suede that came from Bally. And white and tan Oxfords that were also from Bally. My feet went up a size after DD was born so I haven’t worn them in years. But I still have them and take them out to admire every so often. 😊
So tell us about your favourites.

I had a pair of Steve Madden slinky style platform sandals that were a snakeskin print. I loved being 2-3inches taller AND comfortable. I felt like a boss walking around in the 90s and 00s.

My dd and I were just talking about favorite shoes. lol.
Mine would be my good old reliable Birkenstock sandals. I've had my current pair forever and they're still going strong. Mostly I hate shoes and shoe shopping so I tend to stick with what I know I like.

Here are my fav boots ever. I literally wore them for 30 years (honestly!) and because I live in Calgary they never went out of style! I resoled them once and they are beyond comfortable. I finally replaced them this year because they are so beat up. My new one's are another pair of black leather beauties!

I have a pair of Frye cowboy boots that were a big splurge at the time I bought them, but many years later I still wear them.

I had a pair of tooled leather clogs back in the 70s. They were so very comfortable! I wore them all the time since I lived in jeans most of the time. Then one morning when I went to get dressed, they were gone! I know they had been in my bedroom closet the night before. I asked my mom and she said she certainly hadn’t taken them. Then my little sister chimes in with the fact that she saw my older sister wearing them that morning when she left for work.
That baffled me. First, we were not close and did not share anything. Second, she was a nurse so she wore white nurses shoes all day. I drove to the hospital where she was working, found her, and demanded my shoes back. She claimed that she was in a hurry and didn’t want to be late for work so she just slipped my shoes on, acting like it was no big deal. The biggest issue with that lie? My bedroom was on the third floor and her bedroom was on the first floor. She had to go up two flights of stairs and go into my closet to get them. She must have done this when I was in the shower.
She tried offering money for them and said she was going out after work so she needed them. That didn’t work. I told her to wear her nurses shoes to a mall and use her money to buy her own pair. I took my clogs back. She tried to get me in trouble when she came home that night for me embarrassing her at her job. My dad quietly listened to her plead her case. She gave me a smug look since she thought Dad was buying into her crap. Then Dad put his newspaper down, stood up, and said “She would not have had to go to your job if you hadn’t stolen her shoes out of her closet!” He made her pay me for the gas it took for me to have to drive to retrieve my shoes. I adored my dad and his no nonsense ways.

I have a pair of Frye cowboy boots that were a big splurge at the time I bought them, but many years later I still wear them. Years ago on the old board I believe someone posted Frye dupes from Target. Everyone went crazy for them. They were 50.00 and I still have mine. They are insanely comfortable and have held up so well. My favorite shoes were a pair of Jack Purcells. They were they first shoes I bought at an American mall and I felt so cool. I was 15 when I moved here.

The Pappagallo flats I had in high school and college - I spent all of my babysitting money on them! (I'm talking about late '60s or early '70s).

My favorite pair right now are brown fleece lined chunky soled Doc Marten Chelsea boots. Warm and comfy. I have a couple of pairs of Sorel suede lace-up ankle boots in black and camel also fleece-lined that are perfect in winter. My pet peeve is cold wet feet and these are great in ice and snow-good traction. Another pair I love (that I've never worn) is a pair of slip-on green velvet Birdies with with a white rhinestone band on the instep. I got them on close-out during the pandemic and that's the reason I've never worn them. This year on my 65th birthday, I'm wearing them come hell or high water. They're completely impractical for a Connecticut December but I don't care. This is the shoe, except mine are emerald green velvet.

Skechers Shape-Up shoes. They were recalled so I never found more than the 2 pairs that I had worn out. I've had plantar fasciitis off and on over the years so finding a comfy shoe can be difficult. Right now I've been wearing Kizik shoes and they are very comfy. The days of wearing dressy shoes like heels, pumps, flats are far, far behind me. It's all about comfort now.

It's a tie between a pair of LL Bean sneakers and a pair of Birkenstocks. The sneakers were soooooo comfortable for walking distances and wearing with or without socks. There were so comfy that I bought a pair of men's that were the same style because the women's had sold out when I decided to buy a second pair. The Birkenstocks have a wide red stretchy fabric strap. They are very comfy for wearing everywhere and when I do, everyone asks about them because they are so different.

A pair of Bobs Skechers. They were a cute dog pattern, in blue. I wore the heck out of them. I have been unable to find that particular pattern. 🐶

I have a pair of 'vintage' leather Merrell boots that I just love. They are at least 10 years old and just get better every year!

Currently, Rocket Dog Jazzins, I have about 6-7 pairs of them including a new pair of white canvas high tops that I’m going to customize with either HTV or paint.
Another pair of shoes that were awesome was a pair of Levi’s dark denim blue slip ons that I got at Costco for like $20. Of course I didn’t, but I *should* have bought as many pairs of them as I could have gotten my hands on when they were in stock because I’ve never seen them anywhere else since. I Googled excessively trying to find another pair when they started wearing out but no dice.
In the past I loved Vans and Keds but I can’t wear them anymore. 😢 Back in high school I had a sweet pair of white leather Nikes with a rainbow colored swoosh and laces. Some asshat stole them while I was in gym class (gymnastics, so I wasn’t wearing my shoes but had to wear them in the hallway between the locker room and the gym) and in spite of them being really unique and noticeable I never got them back.

My Birkenstocks that I’ve had for over 20 years. Then my Timberlands hikers.
Both of these have gone on oh, so many trips and carried me miles and miles.

This is like asking me to choose my most-loved child. I’m not saying I’ve never had one, but the answer changes day-to-day.

I’m not much of a shoe gal, and with my feet issues I’m all about comfort these days. But I still remember how I felt when I found my wedding shoes. Funky in white matte satin with a clunky heel and weird bow on them. So very girly and not typically me. But they made me squee and I loved them so much we paid around $200 for them which was a huge amount for us those days. And I remember thinking it was so cool when I saw them in a movie the next year.

Moccasins, I can wear the shit out of a good pair of Moccasins. That's pretty much all I wore through the late 70's.

I have very small feet that are very wide and I have a hard time shoe shopping. My creamy Beige Ferragamo Pumps! I found them at a store closing for $60 in 1985. I love them and the heels aren't too high I still wear them a lot. They have been re-soled twice. My favourite boots have a black seude upper with a knitted Black and White shank. I was trying them on and walking around the shoe area at Kohl's and this other lady and her friends were laughing. I didn't care. They fit, were on sale and I really needed some boots with some traction on the sole. It wasn't until I was trying to clear my driveway and my neighbour was laughing at me that I found out that the heels lit up with every step! They were little girls Hannah Montana boots!

I am not a "shoe person", and I kind of resent having to spend money on shoes. My favourite boots for comfort and function (ie. boring!) was a pair of black ankle boots that I wore to work in winter every day for four or five years. I finally replaced them a couple of months ago, but the replacement pair are not as comfortable.
The boots I lusted over is a pair of purple Doc Martens I saw in a shop window on High Street Kensington when I was in London nearly 30 years ago. We didn't have anything like that here in Australia in 1994. I had run out of money and couldn't afford to buy them. I dreamt about those boots for years afterwards.

For comfort or style? My favorites were always comfortable.
I’m coming back to the top to say that after writing this, all of these are going to give away the exact eras I grew up in. Lol
When I was a kid about 10ish I had black patent pleather knee high round toe boots with a 1” heel. The shoe part was smooth patent pleather & the upper parts were wrinkled patent pleather. My mother despised them and called them go go boots in a derogatory manner. I had no idea what go go boots even were. To me they were like Barbie boots. I LOVED them. I thought they pretty much made any outfit. They were comfy too. I’d have to say those were probably my most loved shoe ever.
In middle school I have the perfect pair of clogs. You know the thick ones with a curved bottom and a leather top. Mine were brown. I wore them with everything.
In high school I had a pair of caramel round toe knee high leather boots with a chunky heel. Again seemed to go with everything. I also had a pair of high heels with a black snake skin patterned sandal style top and a cork covered heel. Loved those most comfy Hugh hell I ever had.
In college I had a nice pair of black suede boots that had a 1/2” heel were calf high and were slouchy at the top. Sometimes worn with leg warmers or light socks.
Right now I usually have on men’s leather sketchers shoes or “work boots” not stylish but comfortable.
