I just had 5 inches cut off as a post summer/pool/ocean clean up. I have ill defined curly/wavy hair, meaning the curls are inconsistent at best. I’m thinking of getting a perm. Not the tight curls from the 90s but something more trendy and easy to manage. My stylist said boys are actually all over perms these days. They like the messy look on the top of their head.
Sooo, has anyone taken the perm road recently? Thoughts?

No. I do talk to my hairdresser and they are coming back and she never stopped doing them. Tons and tons of Japanese men start getting perms in high school.

Before getting a perm, try a hair dryer with a diffuser attachment. With a bit of mousse and drying your hair with your head tipped down, that may give you just the amount curl you want.
I have straight hair but can get great curls and volume with a diffuser.

My nephew, 13, has had a few perms. He has stick straight hair and has always wanted to style his hair.
I say go for it, just communicate very well what size rod you want to use.

I haven't had one for a few years (probably 5 by now)... I just have such straight hair and tired of the flat look.. last time I got one I got it as loose as possible and loved it. Probably do it again sometime. While I permed a lot back when, I stopped getting them so often.. but I always feel funny now getting them but my hairdresser says she still does them all the time and it is on the uptick again.

I haven't had one for the past few years but planning to start up again. I usually get a body perm about every 6-9 months and I end up with the soft curl and volume. My previous hairdresser has retired and will be trying a new guy.

I love this! I was in Cosmo buying hair products a few weeks ago and an older woman was talking to the cashier about Perms. Said they were coming back and high school boys were her biggest clients! i was shocked When i went the next day to get my hair cut i asked my stylist if she was doing perms again and her response.... "i did a highschool guy today"! I am so excited! i want to get a perm for a slight curl/waive! I used to get them all the time 20 years ago. Stylist said the only down side is it still smells the same. And now i will have to be careful because i color my hair so it will be hard on my hair!

I used to have stick straight hair and a ton of it. My mom was a hair stylist so I spent the majority of my life between ages 10-22 with permed hair. The last time I had one done a huge amount of my hair broke off at the scalp not long after, so yeah, LAST one, LOL. These days I don’t really need one, my post menopausal hair is much more wavy overall and it’s actually quite curly at the nape of my neck. I don’t think there is an amount of money you could bribe me with to get a perm now!

I got one about a year ago. My hairdresser called it a Modern day perm. Used large rods. It just amplified my natural wave/curl. Loved it as my natural is pretty erratic lol

My sister's best friend was scheduled to do my hair. She was about to graduate. I don't know why, but I was assigned a stranger who FRIED my hair. It took years for it to grow at a decent rate. I did get a few perms after that, but it was never the same. I've always wanted curly hair, but I'm going to stick with straight.

I saw an article earlier today about how they are trendy. This was it: Perms Making a ComebackI wouldn't mind leaning into curly.

I have a friend who suddenly had wavy hair after menopause. She started using special curly hair products and got a specialized cut and her hair is beautifully curly now. It looks very similar to michym’s hair she has posted here. I would explore that route before going full perm.

I have ill defined curly/wavy hair, I really like CurlSmith Soufflé to help define my curls. Might be worth a try. Ulta has a $12 travel size. link

I just read a Reddit post yesterday -- a guy was looking for a hair stylist that does 'Korean perms'. Never heard of it before, but the pictures showed body/soft waves. (I still think of the tight/frizzy perms that I got back in the 70s/80s!)

I don't mind at all - it's the only way to cope with it all. Don't get me started on the one-boob jokes. I have one great tit and one blue tit. Hugs to you and your sister.
