Hello adminI have a friend that created an account here two months ago and it's still waiting for approval. Is there something that needs to be done to trigger those approvals? Thanks.

We need approval to join here? I didn’t realize that.

Wait, there is approval needed?
Is it only one person admitting people?

So how do the bots get approved?

I never knew we even needed approval. I don't think that can be true, unless it's brand new, because otherwise how do the one-post people get in? the ones who bump up old posts with a random link...

I think in the beginning and for a few years after, anyone could join....no approval necessary. I think the "approval needed" was added to help minimize the spammers and to minimize those creating secondary member names-alter ego's for the purpose of intentionally baiting and antagonizing other members.

When I decided to come back, it said wait time is 48 hours to help with spamming.

She’s been active under her pea name regularly so it’s not like she never visits here. That’s weird she hasn’t approved your friend’s account.

I thought it was weird as well. I didn't realize approval was needed.
Thanks for tagging a Moderator and bumping.

Hello admin I have a friend that created an account here two months ago and it's still waiting for approval. Is there something that needs to be done to trigger those approvals? Thanks. As far as I know I'm pretty up to date with approvals, so I wonder if there was something that made me suspect a possible spammer and not approve them. It wouldn't necessarily be anything they did: if there was a flurry of signups from a particular area, or an IP address that's been recycled from a spammer, etc. Can you pm me the username they were trying to register with, and I can check. If I actively rejected it they'll need to sign up again, or if I just left it in limbo (which I sometimes do as it prevents the same username being registered again) I will be able to resurrect it.

This should now be resolved - without going into details, it was an IP address issue that had made me suspicious.
I've also been back through everything I'd intentionally left in limbo in the last ~8 months to see if there were others where I might have been similarly overcautious, and I've let some more newbies in as a result. Fingers crossed they really are legit and not spammers.
For context, I would guess that probably 60-70% of all new registrations get flat out banned as known or highly likely spammers. With the rest, it can be hard to tell, so it's inevitable some legit ones won't get approved and some spammers will get past me.
If any do turn out to be spammers, the best thing is to report the post(s), rather than tagging me.
