Also, I haven’t read his book but wish he could understand the joy he brought to our lives for 10 years. He didn’t let himself see that kind of love and appreciation. He had so much money I only wish he could have found sobriety sooner. I am a die hard Friends fan but I cannot read his book.

Yes he had more money then he could ever spend - but that didn't make his life easy. I feel for him - he let us see his pain and it was real and powerful

My cousin (who was 57) died last year from cardiac failure. He had a serious substance use disorder for many years; I don't know if he was clean or not at the time he died, but the actual death was from the damage that the drugs had done to his heart, not from an overdose (and he wasn't found for a while). I would not be surprised if that happened here.
I am really sorry about Matthew Perry's death. I wasn't a huge Friends fan, but he was my favorite actor/character on there, and made so many people laugh and care about him.

This is so very sad. He is way too young, and I was hoping to see him in another TV show or movie one day. Oh yeah, the good old "hash tag died suddenly." It happens pretty much every single time someone well known dies. They really are ghouls. I worked with a guy who was super fit, and did a lot of running. When he was in his early 40s, he was out for a run, and had a heart attack (caused by an undiagnosed heart condition). He was in a coma for months, and when he came out of it he had an acquired brain injury. He couldn't talk properly and was unable to work again. He eventually died from pneumonia a few years later. So sad. This happened to my cousin. Super fit, undiagnosed heart condition. Sitting on Hampton Beach, massive widow maker heart attack. Was there for a while before someone (he was there alone) noticed he hadn’t moved in a while. Small comfort he was at his happy place. He was 47. This just happened to my husband last Thursday. He is very fit, his chest started hurting, I gave him two aspirin, made him get in the car and took him to emergency. He had one blockage of 98%. They put in a stent and he dodged a bullet. It was a heart attack but it didn't do much if any damage because I got him to the ER fast. He just got home today. There was absolutely no warning and it had never been diagnosed. It happened fast. So I can understand that Mathew didn't see it coming.

There's a branch of my uncle's family who have terrible early heart attacks - I think 5 of his uncles and 7 of his cousins all died before 50 from heart attacks. We've always kept aspirin on hand because of their history - I hope your husband makes a full recovery!

This one hit me hard, but I have had 2 months full of a lot of loss in my life. Everything I had read about him lately, including his book, talked about how he had been clean for a bit of time now. I would be really sad to hear that he had relapsed. But as others have said I'm guessing it was some other medical event, heart attack or he had a history of gastrointestinal issues that had almost killed him before. And you would be amazed how many people have asked me in the last month if I thought my husband's death, or the other deaths in my life, are related to the covid vaccines. People can be so insensitive. I am so sorry. No one should be asking you questions like that. May the happy memories of time spent with your dh help you thru your tougher days. Yup, they are in my biting book.

I’m so glad you were there and got him in so quickly!

I was hopeful millions of dollars on therapy would have helped and the answer is clearly no. It's really just straight up no - people trivialize people who have money/fame and think their other issues disappear, but you'd think after we've seen over and over and over again - it just doesn't work that way.

I am not rich like that and worry there won’t be good enough therapy for me. That all mental illness never go away. I am sure I have cannabis addiction but I like it still. I realize that’s a crutch but for now it’s good. It masks the mental illnesses.

You should ask your doc about that. I knew aspirin was needed for clots or heart attacks. I was lucky that I remembered.

It's good to remember that as a couple of aspirin won't hurt anyone if you just give it to them at the first sign of anything that could possible be heart. When my aunt had a heart attack, the first thing my uncle did was give her aspirin before calling the ambulance. The ER doctor said that probably saved her life. I always keep a bottle in the cabinet. I hope your DH has a full and speedy recovery! I have been so sad about Matthew Perry. I have his book on audible but haven't listened to it. Now it will be really hard. He was always my favorite Friend. His sense of humor is so much like my brother's. He always reminded me of him. RIP.

I didn't much care for Friends, nor did I have a particular soft spot for Matthew Perry. What I do have is mountains of respect for someone who has battled addiction and who fights that fight day in and day out, even when they aren't always successful.
I do suspect he was clean and that it was the damage of previous abuse. At least, I hope that's the case. It's just sad to me to see someone who has fought hard to get their life together, only to lose it so suddenly and so young.

That was very like him. I think alcoholism never goes away. It's so very sad.

I usually don't have much of a reaction when a celebrity passes..i just dont follow actors that much...but this one hit me hard. I LOVED Friends and Matthew always made me laugh. On my WFH days this is the show i have on in the background so i have seen every episode multiple times. It so sad...he was so young.

I always thought it was semi-ironic that they named the show Friends - because that's really what I felt. This show started when I was in college and I remember hoping for a group of friends like this - they were just very much in the same life cycle as me. Emma was born just a couple months after my first - there are few milestones that didn't coincide with the show -so it's pretty startling for one of them to die. Matthew Perry wanted to be remember for his work on helping others overcome their addiction - so I'll leave with - may your honesty help those who need it.
