We were recently in Athens and our luggage carousel was right next to the lost luggage and boy were there a LOT of bags.
I decided, while I was waiting, to text/email a picture of the bag to the owner. I looked at over 50 bags and ONLY 6 had an easily accessible tag or label with contact info on them. I texted/emailed pictures of the bags and heard back from all the owners. They were all looking for their bags and were thrilled to know where they were.
I contacted them again today to see if they got their bags back and it was a uniform yes, and thanks to the picture and location, their bags were tracked down. None of them had airtags.
We used airtags in all our bags so I knew without a doubt that every bag was in the plane.
My PSA: use an airtag but also make sure your contact info can be easily seen. I just generated a qr code with my phone and email address and made a label with that info to stick on each bag.

Not only use an Airtag but BE SURE YOU REPLACE THE BATTERY WHEN NEEDED.
I was traveling with a colleague whose checked bag got lost and they were like, "no problem, I've got an Airtag!" only to open up Find My and discover the battery had died and the last location was at their home 8 months ago :/

I’m going to add one more thing to this. In case your luggage tag get ripped off, put a sheet of paper with your contact info on the top of the things in your bag.

You're awesome scrappinghappy !!! In addition to my info I have my home airport code, not sure if that would make a difference. That was an awesome thing you did. I'm going to have dh make us qr codes. What a brilliant idea. That's a good idea. I’m going to add one more thing to this. In case your luggage tag get ripped off, put a sheet of paper with your contact info on the top of the things in your bag. I have my info taped with clear packing tape on the inside of the lid.

I like the QR idea! I also put a sheet of paper with my info inside on the top of everything in case my tag gets lost.

I recently read a reminder to remove the little barcode stickers that airlines place on your luggage after you arrive at your destination. Those stickers are used for automatic luggage sorting etc. If you leave it on from a trip, then your bag is likely to be sent to the wrong destination.

My travel tip. After check in and the airline puts the bar code tags on your bags check to make sure they didn't key in the wrong airport codes. I was at the start of a week long business trip, with stops and layovers, and the airline messed up one of the airport codes and had my bag going to another international destination. My boss who was standing beside me noticed (thank goodness!) and the airline worker changed the tags. This was many years ago before e-tickets so I'm not sure if it still works the same, but I always check.

I have air tags down to get for family folk for Christmas this year. Seems everybody makes them in all shapes and sizes. Any specific recommendations?
And how does one make scan codes for luggage??
TIA

TIA IF you are talking about a QR code, there is a QR code creator app. I have used it a couple of times to create an info QR and made a sticker out of it. I've put them in a couple of my A5 notebooks that I keep all sorts of info in and will sometimes take shopping with me. I could just see me putting it down or leaving on a counter/cart. Hopefully, someone would come along and scan the code and contact me. That's IF they see the code and know what to do with it. I usually have a note to scan for contact info.

I never scan random QR codes, so you would not be getting any calls from me. Sorry.

I have to say that the Athens airport is horrible for lost luggage and huge delays in getting luggage off planes. We waited for an hour for our luggage. Other flights landed after ours and they got theirs before we did. The reps gave us some bullshit story and a bunch of excuses but don't pull that crap on passengers who just sat through a 9 hour overnight flight. People were pissed.
The best airport I have seen is Portland, Oregon. Their motto is the baggage will be there within 20 minutes. By the time we got off the plane, our luggage was going around the carosel.

Their motto is the baggage will be there within 20 minutes. That's actually an Alaska Airlines policy, not PDX's. But PDX is pretty quick with luggage and overall is a great airport (it's my home airport and I love it).

We got new luggage lately, and I noticed the trend in luggage tags is that someone has to open the tag in some way to get to your information, sometimes putting forth real effort. It seems like it was a privacy thing, but I want the person trying to determine if they have the right luggage or in a situation like this to be able to identify the luggage owner easily.

It seems like it was a privacy thing, but I want the person trying to determine if they have the right luggage or in a situation like this to be able to identify the luggage owner easily. Cause for this: Thieves would go to random airport waiting areas and get photos of the tags for people leaving and then go rob the homes. I have forgotten how the police figured out what was happening. However, it led to wary people making sure their identification could not be easily seen.

Our personal information is backwards in the tag holder so people cant just see it. We also have a paper in each bag. And with the Delta app, you can track your bags
