I have some important work conferences coming up where I’ll have to be in a lot of photos. Headshots, presentations, the whole nine. I am “ok” at makeup but not great, and I feel like my wrinkles are overpowering my appearance, along with being very overweight. I am really struggling with aging, and I feel the ugliest I ever have in my life. I don’t need makeup to be totally natural, I like fun colors and styles, but I also don’t want to look foolish like I am pretending I am young. I would like to have a professional help me learn what products would look best, but I have no idea where to start. I like ulta and Sephora. I use some Clinique products. I know it’s location dependent, but any recommendations on where/which brands might be best to try? Are makeovers at the counters in dept stores still a thing? TIA.

I have the best luck at Sephora - specifically locations that are NOT in a mall.
Go into the store, walk around, look for a MUA whose makeup you like. Compliment their makeup and ask them to help you. Take home samples, practice with them yourself at home, then go back and buy what works.

I’d actually recommend finding a real makeup artist in your area - they’re fairly easy to find via instagram, etc these days. They probably promote bridal makeup the most because it’s the most common and profitable but most will do custom lessons too. They will be more expensive than someone at Sephora (they now charge for a full lesson) but will be proper professionals and will not be selling you anything. They can take more time with you and make better recommendations.

Another vote for Sephora. The salespeople aren’t tied to one brand so you will have options.

I’m hiring the MUA that we hired for my daughter’s bridal party last week. She was fantastic — I loved the makeup she used on me. Plus I was first in makeup at 8:30am and it still looked great when I got home at midnight. She’s also an esthetician. My hair salon recommended her. She uses all sorts of brands. Side note: Charlotte Tilbury commented on how lovely DD looked in the MUA’s instagram.

If you do want to hire someone to actually do your makeup for you, be aware that you need to start looking WAY EARLY because these people can be booked up months in advance. I wanted someone to do mine for a headshot photo shoot a few months ago and couldn’t find anyone because I didn’t start looking early enough. Also, expect it to cost a lot more than you might imagine. The people I found in my area were charging between $100-200+ just for makeup.

You have always been a part of the heist. You're only mad now because you don't like your cut.

Jumping in to suggest Nordstrom. I love going there to get my makeup done.

I'm another that if you have the time, book a make up artist. The one at the salon my family used for all family weddings was amazing, but we had booked months in advance.

I haven’t had it done in ages, so I have no personal referrals, though the MUA sounds like a good idea to me. But I wanted to say I’m sorry you’re feeling the way you are. I’ve been there and is miserable. Where financially feasible do what you can to make yourself feel more attractive be that hair cut/color, makeover, mani/pedi and new outfits. But make sure your clothes and shoes are comfortable too!

I had really good luck when I was looking for something new at Ulta. I had been wearing the same makeup for 20 years and I knew I needed a change. A male employee just stared at my face for a while, picked out products for ‘mature skin’ and tested some stuff out on me. I absolutely loved everything he recommended (concealer, face makeup, eyeliner, lipsticks). I should note that I don’t wear a lot of makeup and it takes me like 5-6 minutes to put my face on.
