I am seriously considering hiring someone to deep clean parts of my house before Christmas. I do not have the gift of cleaning and no matter what I feel like some things never get really clean. If you have hired someone for an occasional deep clean, how did it all work? Can I just say certain rooms? I want mainly the common areas done. Our house is not big, a small rambler, so it would not be a large job. What jobs do you have them do? I really want the stove/oven to get cleaned, our walls and cupboard doors washed, corners of the floor to get cleaned out.
Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Not sure I can convince DH to do this, but I don't think having this kind of cleaning done on occasion is too much.
Thank you all.

Ask your friends and neighbors for recs on someone trustworthy. Once you have someone in mind, you can negotiate both the specific work done and the rate (whether hourly or flat). Be sure to ask if they bring their own cleaning supplies or will want you to provide them.

I agree with what Merge said, but if you go online and look up house cleaning services in your area, some of their web sites will say what's included in Deep vs. Standard Cleaning. That way, you're starting with norms.

My advice is to not wait. The last few weeks before Christmas will be a busy time for your cleaners. If you are willing to get your 'deep cleaning' done early, I bet you get a better price & more people will most likely have an open spot.
We use this 'trick' to get better prices on contract work all the time. For instance, my fire place get cleaned every July --- when the fire place cleaning people don't have much work. My pool is getting work done in January and we're paying 25% less because we were ok with them doing it in their slow time.

My advice is to write down exactly what YOU mean by a deep clean. I mean dustboards, wood blinds, and ceiling fans for example. When I went to hire, I found out that no one does wood blinds. They might run a duster over them (which I can do) but they don't get up there and do blind by blind.
Also - the less crap you have on your furniture the better. Now's the time to get rid of all that stuff laying around

If you only want specific tasks done, I’d call and ask for that vs a “deep clean”. The last time I hired cleaners was for a move out. I just wanted them to do the bathrooms and kitchen and then only specific scrubbing tasks and said so. I didn’t ask for a move out clean, but just a kitchen and bathroom clean. They ended up being late and I started doing the cleaning because I was stressed about it getting it done. But three cleaners showed and banged it all out in the allotted time.

I keep telling DH we should hire a deep clean once a year (I’d love twice) and he’s so resistant because he can do it. He CAN but he doesn't. He’s a SAHD. I’m a teacher. I don’t enjoy cleaning on my weekends. I can keep the place picked up as does he and the kids but that deep cleaning just doesn’t happen. He keeps up on the surface stuff but I’m talking baseboards, switch plates, whole house mop, windows, bathrooms.

My advice would be to really define what *you* mean by deep clean. It would be good if you made a list of each specific job you want included. Otherwise, I bet you'll be disappointed by what the cleaning service considers a deep clean.
I had a cleaning lady once a week when my boys were small. I had a list for her each week, and it was mostly the types of jobs you are describing. I didn't need her to swish a toilet. With three small boys, THAT needed doing EVERY day. Lol. I had her rotate through baseboards, windowsills, the vent hood over the range, grout in the bathroom tiles, cleaning light fixtures, etc --- those jobs you don't do all the time but that need doing at some point. That was most helpful.

When my current cleaning service started, they started with a deep cleaning and they cleaned EVERYTHING. It cost more than a regular cleaning, but very thorough.

I just had a deep clean done on my house last Monday. There is a service available here in town that will do it. It was not cheap, but you pay by the hour and can stipulate what does not need to be done. They were very clear as to what they would do and not do. For example they will not do laundry, pet clean up, or organizing. But, they were bonded, professional and very happy to take care of my home. There were things I did not want them to mess with, for example my craft room and there were things I needed done that they do not do such as laundry - my curtains really need some attention. So you need to be clear as to what needs to be done and discuss it up front.

I've had very little luck finding someone to do a deep clean like I want done. I do have someone come in 1x per month and she does a decent job, but I wouldn't consider anything she does deep clean. It's just to get the surface mayhem kicked down a bit.
