Hi all,
I'm looking for a website or catalog that sells cross-stitch kits that are more than beginner kits. I have a friend who is going to be laid up for a long time after a surgery and I'd like to get her a kit or two. She is a marvelous seamstress and accomplished embroiderer (is that word?) and has expressed interest in starting to learn cross-stitching.
Anyone have any suggestions for on-line places to purchase kits?

Actually, Joann's has a pretty good selection. Dimensions (brand) has pieces that range from simple to elaborate. Looks like Amazon carries the brand too. Hobby Lobby used to also have a good selection but I haven't been in a store in a long, long time.

Satsuma Street
While I don't cross stitch, my sister does and has made two projects for me from this shop. The ones I have are Pretty Little Cities - San Francisco and Pretty Little Cities - Paris. They turned out so cute! Also check out ABC Stitch Therapy

I purchase a lot of cross stitch supplies from 123Stitch.com and FatQuarterShop.com. My favorite kits are Mill Hill beaded cross stitch kits. There a lots of options for kits. Fat Quarter Shop has a series on YouTube called Cross Stitch University. You can purchase a kit and then follow along with the videos to learn. Cross Stitch is very easy. You don't necessarily need the kit. Watching the videos gives the basics on reading a chart, how to start stitching, etc.

I can recommend 123stitch, Fat Quarter Shop, and A Cherry On Top. All have been good retailers.

I agree with Mill Hill... they have small ornament size kits or bigger ones called buttons and beads.. they come with everything you need... the only thing is they are stitched on peforated paper instead of canvas.. and 123 stitch is a good shop to find what you may be looking for...
You can also get a couple of diamond dot projects.. they are cross stitch patterns but with dots instead of thread.. I love diamond painting.. its just sooo easy... no counting or thought.. you just put a dot on the matching symbol.. just another suggestion

Although not a kit, there are numerous computer programmes that will create a cross-stitch pattern from any picture or photo you upload. A favourite piece of art, a loved photo of family or a pet, or your favourite vacation spot….. whatever! Typically, you can change how detailed you want it to be, often by entering how many threads you want it to use (which affects the size too of course) and it creates a legend that tells you want colours to use for DMC floss, or several other ranges as well, and how much you will need. That means you don’t have to go in person to choose colours, you can order them (and the fabric) onl8ne and it will just be like getting a kit. Some are paid of course, but there are some very good free programmes as well, such as Pixel-Stitch; there are several more. There are You Tube videos showing them in use - search for things like: cross-stitch pattern from picture

I always like Lizzie Kate kits…they are a bit more whimsical. Not sure if they are still around as it’s been awhile since I cross stitched. You might find some unique stuff on Etsy too

Kits are a great idea. What a kind friend you are!! I’ll second (or third or fourth, LOL) the Mill Hill kits. The little ones stitch up super quick but are really cute with the beads. Button and Beads are medium size and usually have more detail. But my all time favorites are the kits Mill HIll does from the “Sticks” artwork. The whimsical colors and patterns are just incredible. There are little ones that can be stitched in pairs and then stitched together back to back to make a two-sided ornament (but not just for Christmas!!) And there are larger ones that are just adorable.

You might find some unique stuff on Etsy too Lizzie Kate retired probably 5 years ago now I enjoyed her Christmas stuff. I love Stitching With The Housewives. You can find their stuff at Fatquartershop.com or they have an etsy. They have tons of $5 charts that are quick stitches. I love their round-a-bout series for ornaments.

If there are some things (a movie/TV show, an organization, a season, etc.) that she is a big fan of, you could create your own kit using a downloadable pattern on Etsy and DMC floss. I guess if she is starting from scratch, you might want to get a few things to make it easier - something to organize floss, needles, etc. I use a reading light and magnifying glasses sometimes, since my house isn't always bright enough, especially when we are watching TV.

I have shopped 123stitch for many, many years. Always GREAT service, quick shipping (and only $3.95), great prices, and they have a lot! I prefer a brick and mortar store but I don't have any near me so 123 it is.
