I have seen Apple and pumpkin pie at Costco and Sam’s for weeks. Are people buying them just to eat early or are they actually buying for the holidays? How many days before thanksgiving do you buy your pie? If I would like to go today instead of tomorrow but will it make a big difference in the taste and freshness if I wait?

I bought a pumpkin pie last week at Costco and just put it in the freezer. It only takes a couple days in the fridge to thaw with no difference in taste or texture. I would think a pie bought today will be just fine to eat on Thursday.

a couple of years ago I was in the grocery store the week before Thanksgiving - it was a rough year and I had decided to buy pies for the first time (I usually make them). The bakery guy was refilling the display and suggested that if I wanted some, I should buy them and pop them in the freezer because he expected to sell out. I took his advise and was glad I did when I went back the day before Thanksgiving and they were indeed sold out.
So I'm guessing that's what people are mostly doing -buying to freeze

My husband goes the day before to buy pies. If we got them too early (like today), there would be the temptation to have a slice early! I like the freezing idea. Never occurred to me. Duh.

We make our own pies but last year my dad got a free turkey and Costco pumpkin pie from a local representative that was giving them out in his zip code. We froze the pie and it was fine to eat thawed. I assume people who buy them early just freeze them until thanksgiving. Or they celebrate early due to work schedules or traveling.

I bought a pumpkin pie today and two frozen pies. If I were buying a fresh one (other than the pumpkin) I would buy tomorrow (Wednesday before Thanksgiving). We used to get them from Village Inn or similar type restaurant. You do have to order ahead though.

I bought a pumpkin and French silk today at Sam’s. I decided it’s just the three of us and I don’t want to spend two days cooking for just the three of us do bought several premade items this year and don’t feel guilty. The mashed sweet potatoes from Sam’s are really good well they were last year and I almost forgot about them. They should still be fine on Thursday.

Lol there will only be the three of us and I was thinking the same thing. It’s going to be really tempting the next two nights.

Wait....you are allowed to BUY pies? I thought we HAD to bake out own. Who knew? Pumpkin pie and Nanaimo bars are just as good bought as homemade. Everything else homemade. The Costco pumpkin pies freeze well.

I usuall buy on Wednesday, although I don't know for sure if it was baked 2 days prior and just sitting there in the grocery store for a while? If I ever buy a pie earlier in the season, it's to consume or take to a gathering. That rarely happens, though.

Well, we buy a Costco pumpkin pie pretty early on and we eat it. If we decide to have pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving dessert, Id get it a day or two before.

What is this "buy a pie" phenomenon you speak of?? Ha ha, ! I’ve always just made them myself, I’m making ours tomorrow. But you can definitely buy them even weeks ahead and freeze them and they’ll be just fine (for the most part, most kinds). Wrap in cling wrap and then wrap in foil and you’re good to go.

I dont like any other pumpkin pie other than Homemade or Costco. The problem with the Costco pumpkin pies is that they’re HUGE. I don’t like it so that’s a lot of pie for DH and DD to eat on their own. My homemade pumpkin pie is a 9” deep dish, even that takes them three days to eat. Now when they have their giant key lime pies in stock, I’m down with getting one of those because I eat it too.

Buy a pie? Blasphemy!
My mom was an incredible pie baker and my sister is, too. My sister loves to bake- her crusts taste amazing and the pies are a work of art. I'll have to post some pictures- so beautiful.
I've never had a grocery store or restaurant pie that came close to my mom's and sister's. When I hear people don't like pie, and I found out they've never had homemade pie, it explains a lot.
I've tried a lot of pumpkin pies that other people have made and a lot of them are just not good. I don't know how that it- my family has always used the recipe on the pumpkin pan. What are other people doing?
I'll have to try the Costco pie that you are talking about, though. I just can't imagine the crust being that good.
If I were to buy a pie I think I'd buy one right before Thanksgiving, but who knows how long they were made before.

Dessert after dinner= pie.

In general store bought pies are disgusting. BUT I've had Costco's pumpkin pie and it was delicious. As was an apple pie from either Costco or Sam's. I can't remember. That said I LOVE to bake and am not an expert but pretty good. But pie crust is not my forte. My mom is great and always makes the pies. I really need to practice pie crust more.

my family has always used the recipe on the pumpkin pan. What are other people doing? What recipe? Is it on the bottom of one of those vintage white ceramic pie pans, like I've seen at Goodwill? I've seen apple pie recipe pans, maybe I should look for the pumpkin pie pan! Oh, wait, did you mean can? not pan? lol

I sent my husband to pick up a pie at the bakery today and I’m also going to make an apple pie later this afternoon.
We got a pumpkin pie from Costco in October and dug into that as soon as we got it! For that price for such a big pie, you can’t go wrong!

I always make 3 pies for Thanksgiving. One is complete, since it’s an ice cream with an Oreo crust, grandkids favorite. I will do an apple and pumpkin first thing in the morning. I love pie more than anything, but only make them for Thanksgiving, because I can’t stop from eating them. I make the ice cream one more often, that one doesn’t excite me that much.

The problem with the Costco pumpkin pies is that they’re HUGE. I don’t like it so that’s a lot of pie for DH and DD to eat on their own. For 5 or 6 bucks, I dont even care if some goes to waste. It's a once a year thing. Or, your dh and dd need to try harder. 😂😂😂 breakfast dessert= pie. Midafternoon snack= pie. Dessert after dinner= pie. That’s so funny! See, the problem is that *I* don’t like pumpkin pie, which means I’m going to also make something ELSE that I do like! With competing desserts in the house, they like to trade off. Like right now, there is the remains of a from scratch vanilla layer cake that I made on Monday, a huge pan of pumpkin bars (that I made because I thought we were going to the neighbors on Tuesday but they canceled at the last minute) and then there’s pie. Decisions, decisions. Also, pumpkin pie is DH’s 2nd favorite dessert (chocolate chip cookies are his Kryptonite). So I usually buy 2-3 pie pumpkins, roast them all and purée them, bag it up in two cup increments and freeze it. Then I make him pumpkin pie for his birthday, for Thanksgiving, for Christmas and if there’s still some in the freezer after that, maybe one more pie or bars or cookies or sweet bread. So it’s definitely not a one and done in this house! 😆

I bought a pie last week and froze it. I was hoping to pop back into the bakery earlier this week for a pecan pie, but I didn't manage it. I made cut-out cookies on Wednesday, and the whole family decorated them that night, so there was one homemade dessert. So the bakery pie, homemade cookies, and ice cream made up our Thanksgiving dessert.
