Sounds like we aren't out of the ordinary. I'm the odd one out in my family. Besides the oyster dressing, which my mom always made, I like to experiment with other side dishes, like roasted potatoes instead of mashed. And I am kinda over anything with Cream of something soup in it. I'd love to do grilled asparagus or roasted brussel sprouts. But I know for this side of the family, the comfort of the dishes that their mother always made, is really important so that's what we'll do. I can try the other recipes whenever its just my family. I would literally die if there was roasted potatoes instead of mashed potatoes.. I would be silently crying. And, I would judge you harshly! Since I'm dairy free, I keep out my own dab of mashed potatoes with oat milk, before stirring in any dairy.

That sounds pretty normal. We don’t do Mac and cheese for holidays but will eat other times. I think Thanksgiving is usually really carb filled. We will have mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, stuffing, corn, rolls and a jello salad that are all carbs. Then add in two large pies. There are only three of us this year lol. Oh and I bought a party platter and I usually make enchilada dip with tortilla chips. It’s a total carb loaded meal.

I don’t understand why people like mashed potatoes so much. Potatoes are at their best with crispy edges and tender insides. And don’t get me started on gravy. 🤮

The only thing wrong is Stove Top stuffing. If it is wrong, I don't ever want to be right. It is our very favorite!!!!! I would be upset if there was oyster stuffing, or any other brand and not stove top!

Here's a good one.. first Thanksgiving with my husband's family. All traditional stuff like mashed taters, green bean casserole, rolls, stuffing, noodles.. BUT NO GRAVY.. none, zlich, nada. I thought I was going crazy. So for years I had to bring my own jarred gravy!!! Years later I upgraded to Costco gravy which is pretty decent. I never understood. It was explained to me that the noodles is the gravy.. didn't compute with me... they would put their noodles on their potatoes! (carbs anyone? haha) Still to this day if we have Thanksgiving with them, I bring the gravy. Exactly this, at my husband's family. We have a group text and no one even mentions it. I will arrive with plenty of jarred gravy!

No one ate it so my mom or aunt stopped making it years ago. And noodles? This is one that I haven't heard of as a TG dish. Is there a sauce for them or are they just plain? Spaghetti noodles? Inquiring minds need to know This is a thing with my husband's midwest family. It's homemade egg noodles that cook forever in chicken broth. They're tasty and do kind of create a gravy. We've actually replaced mashed potatoes with them unless we have extras from my family that want the mashed - my kids much prefer the noodles and while I like mashed potatoes well enough, they show up periodically throughout the year, so don't feel like they're a must for Thanksgiving for me.

Somebody is going to have to roll our family out the door after Thanksgiving dinner. I am hosting, but my 2 SILs are bringing most of the food. I am making oyster dressing and cranberry salad. Only about half the group of 12 like the oyster dressing so one SIL is making stove top stuff, too. Sounds fine, right? But she's also bringing macaroni and cheese AND mashed potatoes AND sweet potatoes. FIVE STARCHES. She asked her grown children what their favorite dishes are and she making all of them. She's also bringing green bean casserole and broccoli casserole and deviled eggs. Other SIL is bringing the turkey and FIVE pies. Five pies for 12 people. Everyone has to have their favorite. We are all going to blow up like Harry Potter's Aunt Marge. Wait...people BRING stuff to your house? What a concept. I'd eat 12 starches if someone else would bring them. Enjoy your feast. It sounds delicious! DH's parents and brother came for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter every year and didn't bring anything, nor did they help clean up. MIL asked if she could bring something twice and I said a pie. Once she brought a pie made with sweet & low. The other time she brought an 8" razzleberry pie for 11 people. Must have been on sale. I'm still a little salty about it.

Pies are very popular with my family. One year we had a pie per person. It was not planned, just happened.

Inquiring minds need to know Wow, gravy from me is almost the best part.. lol The noodles!! (Gwad I wish my grandma was alive to make these!!) Let me explain this one. My grandma used to make noodles (homemade) for Thanksgiving. They were the thick'ish kind and the close as we can get to them are sold in the frozen isle.(called Grandma's Egg Noodles). She used, I'm guessing, some of the juice from the turkey and chicken broth and not sure what else. BUT the catch was, there was what we would call croutons in it. She would add those in, and they were kinda crunchy. I'm sure it was leftover homemade bread that she dried out. The noodles were always SOOOOOOO good. But no one can duplicate it. My mom has for years along with all the relatives. But once cooked they were a delicious side dish, along with the potatoes and whatever else was brought to the dinner. She made them for Thanksgiving and Easter. I never had noodles like that again until I met my husband. His mom also made noodles but not the goodness delicious stuff like my grandma. But sorta the same process. She uses the frozen ones (Grandma's Egg Noodles). So, by the time they are cooked they are in a saucy mixture, which is what they would use as gravy. My grandma cooked A LOT because she was a very poor and widowed with a boat load of kids that lived in the middle of nowhere Kansas. Every day she would wake up early and make five loaves of bread (the old fashion long way) scrub the kitchen floor on her hands and knees.. among a million other chores. Of course, all the kids had chores to do as well.

Maybe this is really one of those Midwest things!! My family and DH are basically Midwest kids growing up. But we would never ever replace potatoes for the noodles we would have both.
