Somebody is going to have to roll our family out the door after Thanksgiving dinner. I am hosting, but my 2 SILs are bringing most of the food. I am making oyster dressing and cranberry salad. Only about half the group of 12 like the oyster dressing so one SIL is making stove top stuff, too. Sounds fine, right? But she's also bringing macaroni and cheese AND mashed potatoes AND sweet potatoes. FIVE STARCHES. She asked her grown children what their favorite dishes are and she making all of them. She's also bringing green bean casserole and broccoli casserole and deviled eggs. Other SIL is bringing the turkey and FIVE pies. Five pies for 12 people. Everyone has to have their favorite. We are all going to blow up like Harry Potter's Aunt Marge.

Starches are the best part of Thanksgiving! ETA, however that will be a ton of food, but leftovers for days!

If you can't have a ton of starches on Thanksgiving, it's not a real dinner!
we're having homemade noodles, mashed potatoes, dressing, and rolls. I think someone is bringing something veggie or some sort of veggie casserole.

Wow, that is a lot of food! Hopefully both SILs will be taking their leftovers home with them so that you don’t have to eat all of that starchy and sugary food over the next few days. I know mac and cheese is a must have for so many people but it was never a dish that appeared for either Thanksgiving or Christmas in my family. We did eat mac and cheese, but it was a dinner all on its own and not associated with any holiday. Instead, we had pierogi with either a turkey or a ham. We always made a cheese and potato filling and a sauerkraut filling. And they are dredged in melted butter to keep them from sticking together and then served with gravy and sour cream, so undoubtedly not a healthy dish. Neither of my parents were born in the states and the custom of serving mac and cheese as a side dish would have never occurred to them.

Eh - it's really 4 as most people will pick the stuffing they prefer and not eat both. I think 4 is pretty typical for Thanksgiving. And 5 pies for 12 people is nothing! We typically have 4 pies for 6 people - although the most insane was 17!!! Pies - now granted there were probably 20 or so people there, but it was still utter insanity.

Sounds like we aren't out of the ordinary. I'm the odd one out in my family. Besides the oyster dressing, which my mom always made, I like to experiment with other side dishes, like roasted potatoes instead of mashed. And I am kinda over anything with Cream of something soup in it. I'd love to do grilled asparagus or roasted brussel sprouts. But I know for this side of the family, the comfort of the dishes that their mother always made, is really important so that's what we'll do. I can try the other recipes whenever its just my family.

Lexica - We never had macaroni and cheese for holidays. Never. Although we did have it occasionally on Fridays. Catholic, no meat on Fridays.

Sounds like our Thanksgiving. We're having homemade noodles, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls and stuffing. We'll have 3 different pies. Some veggie sides, a turkey and ham I have 16 people coming to my house this year. We try to make everyone's favorites. Its Thanksgiving after all. I then farm out left overs for everyone to take home. I can't eat all that food. HA.

Do people actually count how many starches for a Thanksgiving dinner?? Never heard of such nonsense. Or too much food. That means no real cooking for days!!! I can't wait to make some turkey eggrolls!!

Sounds like Thanksgiving... we also always have too many carbs. It's part of the fun.
The thought of the one SIL making & taking 6 separate dishes elsewhere gives me anxiety!

I would literally die if there was roasted potatoes instead of mashed potatoes. makes note to make mashed potatoes if you ever come for Thanksgiving - they aren't a favourite here so I don't have them for the holidays our side dishes - Stovetop (dh's favourite - kids won't touch stuffing -and while I like homemade, I'm not making it for just me); Roast potatoes, Roasted Butternut Squash/Brussels Sprouts, mashed yellow turnip (aka swede/rutabaga), ranch Parmesan corn, and rolls...as well as tinned cranberry and a cranberry jello mould. I have three pies on the menu for 5 people...

the comfort of the dishes that their mother always made, is really important so that's what we'll do. Same for us. We only have these dishes once a year and I would be very upset not to have all of the usual, traditional dishes. A few things have changed- I added mac & cheese when my kids were little, my aunt who made the dressing has passed so we no longer have that- but the main dishes have stayed the same.
And yes, I'm going to eat ALL of the starches on Thursday! No counting, no caring! Then back to normal the next day.

Wow that one SIL is bringing 6 dishes? It all sounds good though. We don’t have Mac and cheese, or sweet potatoes or broccoli casserole with our dinner.

His grandmother was a wonderful cook when it comes to some things. But nobody in their family much cared for mashed potatoes and those that did liked instant! So that's what we had! And she didn't like people bringing stuff, so that was the only potato choice!

Sounds right to me. We're having my mom's stuffing (goes in the bird) and cornbread dressing and mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. Wouldn't have it any other way. It's a carb fest!

Here's a good one.. first Thanksgiving with my husband's family. All traditional stuff like mashed taters, green bean casserole, rolls, stuffing, noodles.. BUT NO GRAVY.. none, zlich, nada. I thought I was going crazy. So for years I had to bring my own jarred gravy!!! Years later I upgraded to Costco gravy which is pretty decent. I never understood. It was explained to me that the noodles is the gravy.. didn't compute with me... they would put their noodles on their potatoes! (carbs anyone? haha) Still to this day if we have Thanksgiving with them, I bring the gravy.

Sounds normal to me. Everybody wants their favorites. So much food, means more leftovers.....and hopefully a to-go container for some (that me!, I am always grateful to be offered something to take home....I never ask, but if it's offered >> a couple dinner rolls and enough turkey to fill them for sandwiches....come home with me).

No one ate it so my mom or aunt stopped making it years ago. And noodles? This is one that I haven't heard of as a TG dish. Is there a sauce for them or are they just plain? Spaghetti noodles? Inquiring minds need to know

and what about pre-dinner carbs? we start the day with either cinnamon rolls or monkey bread, then ease into all the dips/chips artichoke dip & crackers, spinich dip w bread and usually some kind of chips w/ cream cheese/cranberry stuff. maybe bree w crackers.....
and the after-dessert carbs. 2nd dinner about 9:00 when people start going for the little turkey sands on rolls........
