My kids are early 20’s and they always only had Thursday-Friday off. My dd works for the same district and it’s Thursday-Friday only.

I'm in So Cal and ds had the whole week off all thru school. He is now at Boise State and still has the whole week off. We always travel that week, mostly because we aren't much into Thanksgiving.

I teach in a different county than the one my kids attend school in. I'm off this whole week, my kids had school Monday and Today.
I go back a week after my kids, I get 1 week fall break, full week of thanksgiving, 2 weeks Christmas, 1 week spring, the monday holidays and veteran's day, get out the week before them.
My kids go back a week before me, 2 weeks fall break, w-f thanksgiving, 3 weeks Christmas, 2 weeks spring, the monday and veteran's day holidays, th-f of county fair, get out a week after me.
Sometimes our holidays line up, sometimes they don't.
I think it's dumb that they have school 2 days this week and I'm sure attendance is down but I'd NEVER EVER tell kids not to come to school on a scheduled school day and my kids will go to school any day there is school unless we HAVE TO miss (gymnastics out of the area, family obligations, etc) or are sick. My pay comes from ADA and if kids aren't out ADA is down and it's really hard to justify a pay raise when ADA is down.

My kid has never had the whole week of Thanksgiving off. Most years she doesn’t even get the Wednesday before off, this year she has off W-F. The school district here tends to have a bunch of random days off here and there. Winter and spring breaks are pretty short at just about a week or so off for each depending on when the holidays fall. Last year they had two weeks at Christmas but then they were in school an extra week later into June, this year it’s back to one week at Christmas and they get out at the end of May. We had fall conferences about six weeks or so ago.

Growing up, I only remember having Thurs/Fri off. My kids always had the entire week. My college age dd has this entire week as well. I guess I just assumed that all schools were out all week these days.

When I started teaching in the 80's, we had Thursday and Friday off. Years later they added Wednesday off. Eventually they added Monday and Tuesday to the week off and added those two days to the beginning of the year. When our district was trying to decide if they should give us the week of Thanksgiving off, they were really looking at absences of students to see if those were good days to take off. Maybe your district is thinking about it and the more kids that are gone, the more likely they'll give the week off next year. That would be my guess. Teachers can't tell kids not to come, but they can make it so going is boring or no learning takes place.

In the district where I taught, the day before Thanksgiving break and winter break were always a half-day. Secondary was out at 10:30 and teacher could leave when the kids did.

I think the reason for discouraging Wednesday attendance, is that *some but not all* Parents have their children skip School the day before Thanksgiving, because it's a travel day for those going out of town, or Family has arrived in town and they want the kids to have an extra day of visiting.
More often than not, the day before Thanksgiving likely means a partially empty classroom because of lack of attendance.
