Glad you found something that works for you! malibou Only buy them if you love them and you get lots of enjoyment from them, otherwise you’re just buying something you need to store and maintain. Buying covers is definitely the way to go if you can. Unfortunately, a lot of the pillows I fell in love with weren’t covers. If you sew, you can carefully open up a side seam and add a zipper. I have a big square pillow that I bought when DD was born because my vintage chair has too deep of a seat for my short legs and I was constantly needing to get up. Problem was it didn’t have a removable cover and babies are gross, LOL. When I determined the pillow needed to be washed, I took a seam ripper to the side seam, bought an 18” zipper and a new pillow insert, washed the outside, added the zipper and new insert and have been happy with it ever since! After we moved to our current house, I made the pillows myself so they all have zippered covers too. ❤️

The holiday pillows that I currently have are stored in trash bags in the attic with whatever season they are (all fall together, all Christmas together, etc.). But I have been transitioning to pillow inserts and just buying covers and swapping them out for the season. Makes storage super easy because it's just flat covers that need stored. The pillows are always in use.

Thank you dewryce. You are absolutely correct. I likely would have compromised and now I will be more deliberate, and hence happier. I may even make ones if I don't find what I want. To piggyback on what dewryce said, you can also do seasonal or color, not necessarily a specific holiday. I have some red ticking stripe covers that look great at Christmas when they’re next to a green plaid pillow, and are also super cute in February next to something pink. In the fall, they also work paired with gold and brown pillows.

i'm surprised no one uses vacuum saver bags? putting pillows in them is SO satisfying and they go down to almost nothing, so easy to store. then when you open them next year they'll puff right back up. i put a dryer sheet in to keep them fresh.

The problem with using trash bags to store stuff like this is there’s always the risk that something will be accidentally thrown out or donated. A friend of mine had an expensive down filled duvet insert in a black plastic trash bag. She pulled it out of storage and was going to switch over the bedding from summer to winter and had the bag sitting on the floor in the bedroom while she went out to run an errand. Her DH came home from work, saw the bag sitting there and thought it was trash so he put it out in the bin without even looking in the bag right before the trash truck came down the street. She got home and asked him what happened to the bag with the duvet and he said, “Whoops, I thought it was trash so I put it in the bin and then the trash truck came.” 😳🥹 She was just sick.
The same thing happened with our handmade family Christmas stockings that were stored in our attic in a brown paper grocery bag. My mom was having the roof replaced and water got in when it rained. I’m sure the bag got soaked and no one bothered to look inside before pitching it in the trash when the mess was being cleaned up. I’m still kind of gutted by that because my favorite aunt made them all with elaborate embroidery and beadwork.
When things are stored in an actual zippered bag or tote, people usually stop for a second to think and look inside before chucking it in the trash.

Most of my holiday/seasonal pillows are covers with inserts, so the covers are pretty easy to store. Some of my Christmas pillows are not the insert kind, so they go into one of those bags where you can suck the air out with a vacuum cleaner. We don't have a lot of room for extra storage, so this helps greatly.

this thread made me rethink my pillow storage situation especially after a bunch of pillows fell on DH as he was getting down the xmas ones.
