I put some garland up on a mantle-like shelf using command hooks. It stayed for a few days but last night it fell down. Is there a better way to get it to stay? I haven’t had much luck with command hooks with other things but maybe I just need a stronger one? The garland isn’t very heavy.

command hooks didn't work for me either. i use cup hooks placed further back so they can be hidden by the garland. you can use the wire green ornament hangers to blend into the garland as they attach to the cup hooks. i don't think you need more than 3 hooks unless your garland is draped off of the mantle and then you may need more to handle the weight.

I used clear packing tape on mine, and then set a few heavier decorations on top of the garland at intervals. Not very high-tech, lol.

Our mantle is wood, so we use clear thumb tacks at the top in 2 places.

I put 3 small nails into my mantle years ago. I use florist wire to attach the garland around the end of the nails. When fully decorated my garland is fairly heavy so this works well. I never notice the nails. They are hidden behind regular items the rest of the year.

I have some small finishing nails at the back, by the stone, they are brown and unnoticeable. I use a thin guage wire to attach mine. I have the garland on the front of the mantel, not on top.

Mine isn't really a mantle, it is an Ikea floating shelf that is above the TV. I doubt it is real wood so I wonder how easy it is to put nails or cup hooks in it? I also wonder if packing tape would remove the finish? You can't really see the top of it too easily since it is high, but I still don't want to ruin it. I am worried about taking the command hooks off as well.

I have used fishing line and tiny nails. Tie the line to the garland and then to a tiny nail that can be hidden. I also do that for wreaths. Tie the fishing line to the wreath then put a tiny nail in the top of the door and tie the line to that. I did the same for some large snowflakes on my mirror. I hung them on the fishing line and then a small nail in the top of the big wood frame on my mirror.
The fishing line is clear so you can barely see it. Easy to hide.

Put a small-ish piece of painters tape down. Then stick command hook on the tape.
Putting painters tape under gorilla poster putty is only way we got stuff to hand on daughter's classroom cinderblock walls. Probably will work under command Hooks too

I hang really heavy garland on my fireplace. I use four big command hooks. It’s a two person job to hang the garland. My husband and I secure the garland at the same time on the two outer hooks and then we work our way in and secure the garland on the inner hooks.
After many failed attempts in the past, I learned that the key (at least for me) was always having both sides supported during the hanging process and using really big command hooks.

Alternative idea - just set the garland on the shelf instead of hanging below. Add some tall candles or knickknacks. I do that on our mantel because the stockings are hung below.

I paint rocks and use them to weight it down on the ends.

I am worried about taking the command hooks off as well. What if you put the Command hooks on the wall above the mantle right next to the top of the shelf. If it is high, you likely would not see them. Then use wire or fishing line from the hooks to the garland. Maybe the Command hooks aren't staying because of the finish of the shelf. I use them for hanging quilts in my house and they work well even with larger quilts. (I'm assuming you do not have a cat that jumps up there and possibly causes all of this to come crashing down.)

lisae just posted this on the Christmas ornament color scheme thread and she has a great idea to use eye hooks on the wall itself and wire to attach the garland. Helpful video!

I use sticking hooks. They hold the garland and the stockings

Your video was very helpful! This won’t work in my situation because the “wall” behind the fireplace is stone siding that’s all mortared in. Screwing or nailing anything into the wood itself would not go off well with my DH. I need something that absolutely won’t ruin the poly finish on the wood. Also, we use our fireplace (wood burning) so whatever I put up will have to come down right after we’re done with our photo session. 😕
