Reading the colours for Christmas ornaments thread - I was surprised by how many people mentioned colour schemes for trees? I guess I assumed most people had eclectic trees with a variety of ornaments rather than a curated tree in specific colours but I feel like I assumed wrong.
Tell me about your tree(s) - is it the same every year or do you change it up?
Ours are eclectic with ornaments from my childhood, from both my mum and MIL, places we've visited, and just ornaments that have caught our eye or been gifted.

Our tree has multicolored lights and all kinds and colors of ornaments. I always felt sorry for kids whose families had a perfect, themed, color-coordinated tree. Didn't seem like much fun to me. Decorating the tree as a family has always been one of my favorite things, especially with a pre-lit tree and no garland!

This year we have three trees.
Our main tree is collected ornaments and it is colorful. We collet ornaments from every trip we go on so it has those, ornaments my kids made, ones that were gifted to us. It's a hodgepodge, literally. I do use silver + red mercury glass balls to help give it some cohesion.
Our main bedroom tree this year has cream velvet ornaments on it along with silver mercury glass ornament. So cream and silver.
Our dining room tree has all painted ceramic ornaments that we have painted as a holiday activity for the past 15 years or so.

My tree has to match my house.
I hate red and green (well, I don’t hate green, I hate the combo of red and green and I don’t like the traditional Christmas green shade).
My tree is pink and gold. I have ornaments from all of our family vacations, ornaments that belonged to my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. They just all match the color scheme.
Your tree can be sentimental and meaningful…and also pretty and matching.

My Christmas tree is live - and I like a lot of light wood and natural colored ornaments - also wood and old fashioned ornaments in light pinks and greens. Kind of ‘Scandinavian Modern’ in my mind.

We used to have our main tree as the collection of all of our memories. Every year DH and I would get an ornament that signified something of that year or some place we traveled (ornaments make the best travel souvenirs).
Once we had kids, they also got an ornament to commemorate something from that year.
I also used to put up a small tree that was decorated with crystal ornaments I bought when we lived overseas.
Then our wonderful cat, who never bothered the Christmas tree, passed away.
Our tree hasn't been the same since.
The cats (plural) we have now wreak havoc with our tree. We now put a stopwatch on it to see how long it takes them to climb it after we get it upright.
The chubby cat likes to climb at least halfway up and try to take a nap. Of course, it isn't easy when her chonkiness makes the branches bend.
The other cats take turns making a running leap into the tree to see who can land the highest. Bonus points if they can knock Bella off her branch.
Needless to say, the feline antics of the last several years have kept our special ornaments in their boxes and plastic ones on the tree.
As for a color scheme, it depends on what color plastic ornaments I pull out and what the destroyed ones are replaced by.
Couple that chaos with the dog we had that would help herself to any candy canes placed low enough for her to reach and you realize there isn't such a thing as a Silent Night in the CraftedbyS household.

I love themed trees, but that doesn't necessarily mean color themed. When DH and I first got married, we bought a really nice box set of high quality ornaments. We used that set for years. .Then as we started to travel with our sons, we started to purchase ornaments on our trips. We now have 2 trees. The first tree is 10ft and is located in the foyer of the house. We use that for our travel tree ornaments. We have enough to fill most of our 10ft tree, but not all. The rest is filled with silver and blue ornaments, and I have blue ribbon on my tree. Every year we set up that tree, it brings back so many happy memories.
Our 2nd tree is a 7ft frosted tree that we place in our living room. It's our Star Wars theme tree. It has the Death Star for the tree topper, and an assortment of various Star Wars ornaments. Some are from the Hallmark collection that connect to each other and play music and sounds from the movie. We all absolutely love that tree!
To each their own. If a color coordinated tree brings you joy, more power to you! What matters most is how it makes you feel, not how strangers feel.
And not to get too personal, but my childhood was a series of trauma. I honestly would not want ornaments from my childhood.

I wasn't implying otherwise - I think Christmas trees are almost always pretty whether they are matching or not I didn’t say you were. I just hate it when people immediately jump to “my tree is full of memories,” etc. and assume matching trees aren’t. You can do both.

I switch my ornament color scheme from year to year but always have white lights. This year my tree is pink and silver. Last year it was red and silver.
Some day I'd like to do a red, turquoise & white color scheme.

Our big tree has only unique ornaments - some of mine and DHs from our childhood, and all the ones we bought for the kids or to commemorate family events. There is no color scheme. No colored balls, no ribbon. Just white lights and memories.
But I also have a white Astros tree in the other room that is all blue and orange and baseballs. I love it. I plan to do a little music themed tree for my home teaching studio next year.

We have a 10+ ft faux tree and it is full, full, full of meaningful ornaments. I use a thin red ribbon to hang each one to provide cohesiveness. I really need to purge some but it is so hard.

Sentimental Tree ~ This has all of our personal ornaments, some from childhood, others we started getting on our travels starting during our honeymoon, some that were the favors from our Christmas wedding, and other special ornaments. We love putting this tree up because each ornament is a memory. These days we keep it in our bedroom. Colored lights and tinsel Peacock Tree ~ This tree is in my study, it has a few peacock ornaments, some feathers, and the peacock color theme plus gold. Puts a smile on my face every time I walk in there. White lights. Santa Tree ~ In the entry way done in red, black & white. My reindeer have taken over the house at Christmas and I wanted DH to have something he loved as much and he chose Santa. It has some generic Santa ornaments from Crate & Barrel, some special ornaments I buy each year (this year is Hawaiian, have Santa w/ a mask, Santa & Mrs Clause kissing, Santa on a motorcycle.) Plus lots of ornaments that match the color theme. White lights. Living Room Tree ~ This matches our decor, has mint, brown, silver & white. White lights. Sports Tree ~ This Tree had a sports’ theme with ornaments from DH’s favorite teams, for his study. We decided this year to move his favorites over to the sentimental tree and let this one go because he wasn’t as in love with it as he used to be. Colored lights because that is DH’s preference.

Some day I'd like to do a red, turquoise & white color scheme. We used to switch out colors each year as well, but found pretty quickly that we were picking the same colors year after year. We started because his aunt picked a color theme each year and did her wrapping to match and we wanted to honor her.

Mine is basically traditional as all my ornaments are from my childhood, my kids, gifts from friends, etc. I guess my main color is red. I LOVE my tree and ornaments. Most ALL of them have a special meaning. I had an aunt that worked for Hallmark and she used to send me the GOOD ones based on my kids... trains, ballerina, bears.. and they were all on the higher end of ornaments. Then every year I would buy one (usually after xmas so it was cheaper) I would hit up Hallmark for one or two. Then there is the xmas markets or seasonal stores either on vacation or just out and about. My boss used to travel A LOT.. he would always bring me one from his travels. I have one from Bethlehem, Ireland, somewhere in the Caribbean, and other places.
My tree is basically the same every year. Sometimes little things change but all in all same ornaments.
Sometimes I go through and pull out ones that have no meaning or maybe ribbons will change. Or my topper or skirt.
A couple of years ago, I didn't put up our big tree since we got a new dog.. So I bought a little one to put on a table. I made that our pink tree (my favorite color).. my daughter and I had TONS of fun just doing something different that year. Everything is pink or glitterly/sparkley. Very girly.

I have three trees One 9 foot pre-lit one that is our main tree. It sits in the front window. Then I have two pencil trees - one flocked, one not. The unflocked one goes on the landing at the mid point of our stairs going upstairs. The other sits in the family room beside the tv we watch everything on. Main tree used to be that eclectic mix that looked like we threw ornaments at it. Then I had the box of teal/silver ornaments that I used in bowls/jars/in the mantle garland in the family room because that is the colour scheme in there. Main tree room was a collection of hand me down furniture. When we finally decorated that room with proper furniture and had it painted, it also became a bit of teal & grey. So I took all those teal ornaments and they became the decor for the main tree. This year I scrounged every teal/blue/silver ornament I could find and made those clusters - and from the front of the tree it looks like the clusters wrap around. From the window side, there are a few clusters hanging LOL. The landing tree holds my Rae Dunn & Disney ornaments. I collect the blown glass ornaments from Disney that are the shape of the Mickey head, but look like a Christmas ornament. And I have an 18" carved Jim Shore Mickey that sits beside that tree. The flocked/tv tree holds my Hallmark Father Christmas series. These used to go on the main tree, but now there are so many they need their own tree. I've told this story before - but the series is in memory of my Dad. He was the original Father Christmas in this family, started calling randomly any time of year to tell you how many days until Christmas there were. So when he passed in 2005, I thought a Hallmark series would be a great way to honour his memory every year. As luck would have it (it was meant to be) the Father Christmas series started in 2004. I found the first one on eBay. So now I have one for his last Christmas with us and one for every year he has been gone. The current year I buy now and hang on Christmas Eve.

I still haven't put up my table top tree. However, when I do put up a tree or garland or anything Christmas, it has a color scheme. For many years I used red, gold and white. Then I dropped the red on the tree using it only on garland. My tree was then just gold and white. Eventually I swapped red for burgandy or plum colors which went better with my house and continued the gold and white. Years ago, I found some mauve Martha Stewart ornaments at Kmart and have used those with white on a garland. These colors no longer work in my house so I'm back to white and gold mainly. I also use at least 3 of each ornament, often more. I did 2 YouTube videos on my garlands a few years ago. For about the last 12 years or so, I have had a white tree. 7 1/2 foot with multicolored lights with white cords. I add 2 sets that I wind up the middle of the tree to light up the inside. All my ornaments are round, solid color, ball ornaments. Mostly pastels. It really looks pretty. But, being white and Texas heat, they yellow after a couple of years.
This year it needed replacing. I felt like switching it up and getting a green one. Multicolored light, more added to the inside. Same solid colored, round ornaments. I put on about 150 ornaments. This year I am adding many single strands of old fashioned, boxed tinsel. I haven’t finished it yet. But am looking forward to the nostalgia of the silver tinsel.

I used to collect Hallmark series ornaments and used those for many years. But they now sit in a couple boxes in the basement.
Many years ago I switched to red and white as a basic theme, with touches of silver. That is the focus of pretty much all of the Christmas decor for the house. It goes well - an accent color in the year-round decor is a cranberry red color. The main tree is 9’ tall and is visible from the outside through the very big living room windows. The lights are all white except for a couple places on the front porch where they are red.
I do have several penguin ornaments that are mostly black and white and those I buy because my husband loved penguins, as do I, so they are in his memory. I’ve also gotten several cardinal ornaments, and the red color is perfect. We used to buy at least a couple new ornaments every year, and I’ve continued to do that.

It really makes me wish we had one; but South Central Texas = no use for a fireplace more than once a year so we chose more wall space instead. We do tend to buy ornaments in sets of 3 or 5 as well. I think it adds to the cohesiveness, but they are well spread out throughout the tree. I do have some smaller ones in sets of 10 like some brown reindeer and white birds with floufy tails! For a couple of trees we also have a lot of silver or gold stars that match the tree toppers, from Crate & Barrel. I love the shimmer they give the tree and how that moves your eye around the tree.

We don't use our fireplace. I've tried two sets of gas logs and never got any heat out of either set. There is no natural gas here and it turns out neither of us really like a fireplace. I gave up and wished I'd never put a fireplace in. The TV sits in front of the fireplace.

It gets cold enough a few weeks a year, it's been cold this week and a lot of people have gas logs. They just didn't work for us and even if they had, I can't really justify keeping a propane tank for the little we would use them.

Mine is kind of a hybrid. I have an Alexa tree, so I change the light colors up as I feel like it. I decided when I bought the tree a couple of years ago, to change my sprays to neutrals. So, I have greens/creams/white/silver/gold sprays, but the ornaments are eclectic and the lights change day to day.
I used to have a small children's tree with ornaments for and given to the boys, but I don't do that anymore. I have a couple of small flocked trees around my fireplace that are just simple white lights and silver bulbs.
I also think a fully eclectic tree can be fun and homey, but they can also be sophisticated too. I think mine in in between, but if you can imagine "Hallmark" tree--My mom has a tree like that. Very very full of ornaments of all shapes, sizes, colors but all of her ornaments are "selected" and range from $10-$100 (most are probably the $15-$20 range but she has a few collector level ornaments)
It is quite the sight.

When my kids were little, my tree was full of hand made decorations that I absolutely loved. But now I am loving being able to have a "grown up" tree and choose my colour scheme.
The last two years I have used a mint and white tree, with mint, turquoise, silver, and pink baubles, and plain white lights.
The previous few years I had a normal coloured tree and made a rainbow, using bright coloured baubles, starting with red at the bottom, up to pink, purple, blue, green, gold at the top, and brightly coloured lights.
I also match my wrapping paper to the colour scheme of my tree.

Ours isn't really a cohesive color scheme, but it's heavy on red.
White lights and our basic bulbs are all red, all similar in style and spread throughout the tree. Red and green striped candy canes also throughout the tree. Then we have a variety of handmade, personalized, specialty and Hallmark type ornaments. Some of those are red and green and some are other colors.
One day I would like one of those beautiful, all matching trees with fancy ribbons and bows and totally matching ornaments. And put our regular sentimental ornaments on as smaller tree. BUT I am lazy and not good at decorating, making bows, styling ribbon etc, so it probably won't happen.

It has Hallmark ornaments, ornaments from Target, WalMart, CVS, Walgreens, shops, etc.
Handmade too.
It is eclectic and we all love it!

Same colors, same tree, same ornaments, mostly same decor. Sometimes some new decor additions, are added in the mix.
Different decor arrangement and different spot....from year to year. This year everything is in a different spot, because I changed a couple things around a few months ago.
