Hello
My husband has to go to Chicago mid January and I'm thinking of tagging along. He will actually be outside of Chicago in Westmont - I know nothing about the area.
So...am I crazy to go with him in January and is there anything to keep me occupied around Westmont during the winter?
Also - is the area around where the Blackhawks (hockey) play safe? They are in town the final night we are there and I want to surprise him with tickets (his birthday is the following day). Would it be safe to take Uber from Westmont to the arena?
Thanks

It will likely be extremely cold in January. We're actually experiencing higher than normal temps right now but Jan/Feb is usually brutal. Westmont is a nice area - will you have a car? If not, probably not a lot to do. Oakbrook Mall is a nice mall nearby but it's an outside mall.
An Uber would be safe, but $$$. It's probably at least an hour from Westmont to the United Center.

I went to Chicago in December once - I live in SC and took my winter coat - I ended up going to Eddie Bauer and buying a really warm coat - I don't know what kind of winter you are used to, but be forewarned. Otherwise, I have no advice, but hope you have fun!

January is cold.....very cold and there is liable to be snow. If not snow on the ground, then slush. The United Center is well lit up. We've gone to a handful of games. We've purchased both the tickets and the parking tickets. I didn't want to mess with parking far away.
Westmont....I can't help you with that.

According to the long range forecasts, the highs are above freezing for January with mostly lows in the teens. But that is what it says right now is likely to change. Also it doesn’t take into question the wind chill factor. I learned a long time ago to be prepared for anything and wear layers. The other important thing is warm socks and waterproof footwear.
I doubt there is much “tourist” things in Westmont unless you want shopping. As mentioned Oak Brook Shopping Center is near and is quite large. It has all the well known retailers that you would find in any large shopping center.
You can take the Metra train into the downtown area. It’s safe and reasonably priced. Then you’re in walking or Uber distance to all the sites of the city.
Taking an Uber to the United Center would be safe but probably pretty pricey. Taking the Metra train downtown and then an Uber wouldn’t be practical as the schedule is geared to those who commute for work. There might not be trains late after the game but you could check the schedule and it might be doable.
