950nancy funny enough I was back in my childhood home of Los Angeles in October. I could not imagine living there again and actually have no desire to return again, even for a visit. I think I'd rather remember it as it was when I was growing up. Sometimes you can't go home again. Even here in Omaha, the amount of growth in the almost 20 years I've lived here is astonishing.

I lived in Omaha for college and loved it. That was nearly 15 years ago now but Omaha will always have a special place in my heart. I’m from San Diego, CA so the winters were definitely a shock but I liked that it felt like a city but there was still a small town feel compared to what I was used to.

Omaha? Fabulous place! The most glorious beach, with lovely white sand. The beach is about 2 miles long and has that great sandspit at the northern end where you can swim in the waves on the ocean side, or the calmness on the inlet side. It’s truly well named, because of course Omaha is a Maori word, and it means “a place of pleasure” - so apt. Oh. You aren’t talking about that Omaha, the one that’s an hour’s drive north of Auckland? ok, then I’ve got nothing. Sorry. I SO wish! That sounds so much better 😍 😆😆

We visit extended family there several times a year. The zoo is amazing! Old Town is fun.
Everything is on a hill. Lol!
Winters are cold and snowy. Summers are hot and humid.
Everything is really spread out. You have to drive a lot

They haven't been back since they were little, so there's no proving that for now.

While I also live in Omaha, lisacharlotte already commented on whatever I'd contribute. Taxes suck. The sprawling metro and the inability to get anywhere quickly has become a problem for me - BUT, that's partially my own making by living where I do in town. Always lots to do. Lots of opportunities to become involved with the community if you want. I don't know what else to tell you except it's very midwestern - however you might want to define that? I lived in Sioux Falls for seven years and moved back. It's usually 10 degrees colder (year round) with many, many, many inches more of snowfall each winter in Sioux Falls.

Checking in to give my glowing review of Omaha! Moved here in 2005 from north/east of Dallas. It has all the pros of a large city without as many of the cons. I live in Dundee (very close to UNO) only 3 miles from downtown/Old Market. We don't have beaches or mountains or pro sports teams, but there is plenty to do all year. We have an amazing new downtown park and a new science museum on the river, world class zoo, good restaurants (we have multiple James Beard nominee chefs), traffic is manageable (especially after Dallas). If you can't get it here, you can always day trip to Kansas City. We also have world class Nebraska Medicine. Known for their transplant center, as well as their global center for health which was ground zero for the Ebola outbreak containment. NM is currently undergoing a huge $4B expansion with state and federal funding. Taxes suck. Omaha and Lincoln and the surrounding suburban cities are the tax base for the entire state. NE is big, and sparsely populated outside of the far east cities. But it's not enough of a deterrent to stop me from choosing to stay now that I've retired. I have lived in a lot of different cities/states/countries. This is the only one that felt like home when we moved here. I am glad you have found all the positives! I love my home state and Omaha. I also love Lincoln, even though a lot of people don't! Dundee is my favorite area!

I'm in Colorado now and on the side of a mountain and still feel like Omaha is a harder place to learn to drive.

He's currently in Nebraska looking for a rental and we're planning to move 3/1
He's seen a couple of places this week and will see a couple more Saturday before driving back to pack and move. Fingers crossed for the perfect house, quick! 😆😩

I grew up there but haven't lived there in decades. It seems to be much *more* than it was when I was growing up, when we joked that there was nothing to do but watch paint dry. There are other peas though who do live there now - Sue is one, though I can't remember which Sue-related board handle is hers just now - so I'll bump this up so they can reply. When did you live there? I also grew up there until I went to college in Lincoln in 1983. I was never bored, but I was also raised in the time where we were free range before free range was even a thing. We lived just a few miles from Boys Town. There are gorgeous areas surrounding Omaha and in the summer the green is really amazing. Lots of hills and lots of people. Lots of humidity and lots of bugs. I feel like the people from Nebraska were really friendly even though it was a bigger city. To be honest, I'll take Grandby, CO anyday. Way more moose and elk. It is a beautiful state to drive through. I remember the green rolling hills.

I cried when I “had” to move there for a position that was right for our family. I did not want to go, but knew it was the best thing for us. Fast forward four years and I cried when my husband’s company was bought out and we had to move.
I love Omaha and if it had better weather in the winter, I would move back. It’s a Midwest hidden gem.

Hea headed back here tomorrow and bringing a trailer with him. We have the huge advantage of being able to head that way anytime from after presidents day to the 5th when we can get the keys to the house. Were going to go ahead and have everything packed but suitcases so we can drive whenever the weather looks best.

I haven’t read all of the replies so some of this may be repeat! LOL
We have family in Omaha and visit often.
Summer is hot. Winter is snowy and cold. And there are lots of hills that make driving quite a challenge!
Stuff is really spread out … you drive alot.
The zoo is AMAZING! Tons of great places to eat.
Lots of nice places to live. Close to Kansas City and there’s lots to do there too!
Edited to add: went back to read replies and saw I already replied! Hahhaaaaaaaaa! I said mostly the same stuff but I’m more long winded tonight. Hehe.

Omaha is not typically snowy in the city. January was nice with some really good snow. Usually it's a little snowy, more icy, and very windy. Windchill is the big culprit here. Mid-January was the coldest we've had in the 19 years I've lived here. -17f temp / -36f windchill was no joke as I stupidly took my dog for a walk to pick up takeout.
You won't need a giant arctic parka. You need layers. I have a knee length down coat that is good for winter dog walks. You'll need base layers, mostly tops. I rarely wear base layer bottoms, but good to have. Then a fleece or sweater or sweatshirt. Then a coat. Good traction waterproof boots, it gets wet when the snow melts. Obviously hats and scarves and gloves. I buy my wool socks from Cabela's when the weather warms up at they go on sale. 4 pair $14.99.
Do not warm up your car and leave it unlocked, someone WILL steal it. Drive slow, assume you and everyone else will not be able to stop as expected, leave lots of room. We don't get consistent snow (or rain) so the first few days are accident central here. Especially when icy. We have a lot of hills.
All that said, summer is hot af! We get the best of both worlds! 😂
