Were finishing out year two of our empty nesting adventures and it's time for a new contract. We're open to just about everywhere but im especially curious about a position in Omaha.
I've never been in that area at all. I've done a weekend in Granby, CO and drove from Ohio to South Dakota and back in 48 hours but I only saw snow.
Anyone from Omaha or the surrounding area?

My in-laws have lived there their entire lives. My MIL was so happy to retire so she wouldn't have to drive in the snow all the time.

I grew up there but haven't lived there in decades. It seems to be much *more* than it was when I was growing up, when we joked that there was nothing to do but watch paint dry. There are other peas though who do live there now - Sue is one, though I can't remember which Sue-related board handle is hers just now - so I'll bump this up so they can reply.

I lived in Nebraska for four (long lol) years. Omaha has good parts to it, for sure. But knowing you a bit through Facebook, I am not sure the area would be enough for you maybe? I know you have lived in the midwest so you get the "culture", though.

I'm no help, because the only thing I know about Omaha is
Omaha, somewhere in middle America Get right to the heart of matters It's the heart that matters more I think you'd better turn your ticket in And get your money back at the door
🎶 🎵 🎤
And now I will be singing that song all day long!

Well, we're about 3 hours away in KC. I've been there once, it was a nice good sized city in the midwest.
It's Nebraska so your winters suck. (Missouri's do too) Their zoo is world class, and I believe the arts scene is good there too. We have a brand new airport here and I know many people who drive in to fly out from here as it's cheaper. Cost of living is reasonable as well.

I have a dear friend who sold her regular old raise-your-family house here in Washington during the top of the real estate boom two years ago and bought a beautiful and huge refurbished farmhouse outright in small town Nebraska. She LOVES it there! I guess it is all in what you are looking for!

When did you live there? I also grew up there until I went to college in Lincoln in 1983. I was never bored, but I was also raised in the time where we were free range before free range was even a thing. We lived just a few miles from Boys Town. There are gorgeous areas surrounding Omaha and in the summer the green is really amazing. Lots of hills and lots of people. Lots of humidity and lots of bugs. I feel like the people from Nebraska were really friendly even though it was a bigger city. To be honest, I'll take Grandby, CO anyday. Way more moose and elk.

The College World Series (baseball) is held there each year. There is an AF base there. (BIL was stationed there in the 1970s).

I have lived in Nebraska my entire life. I live in the Metro area. I have watched Omaha grow into a city with much to offer.
Lots of good restaurants and entertainment. The downtown area keep improving. A streetcar will join areas of the city.
The worst thing is traffic. The freeway system is not keeping up with growth. The city is spreading out.
If you have specific questions, ask.

I'm searching for houses as close to downtown as I can find because of just that 😵 It would be another potentially short term contract for about a year before I would have to commit to staying so I'm willing to try and kind of excited to explore that part of the country but I would absolutely not be willing to make a permanent move just yet. I think I could make it as long as I found some like minded people to socialize with

For now I'm just trying to get a general feel for the area and narrow down which neighborhoods/towns we may want to look. I won't likely be able to visit before we decide so we will probably do a short term rental and hop a little. His contract would have him working in grand island, omaha, Gretna, north Platt, Sioux falls, and Fargo. I just know I'm not moving to Fargo 😆😵

I am familiar with Grand Island, Gretna and North Platte.
North Platte is way out west in the Sand Hills. Plus close to Colorado. Minus. Absolutely nothing out there. I love driving through the area, but I could never live there.
Grand Island has more to offer, but nothing like the Omaha metro area. Gretna is basically part of the metro area.

I live in a super conservative area.

I can't believe you've been free ranging for 2 years now. Time really does fly. The two years is since we left home and includes the year I used richmond as a home base and traveled with him less often whoke he traveled every m-f. Full free range was a year on Dec 5th...it really is crazy how fast it's gone!

Full free range was a year on Dec 5th...it really is crazy how fast it's gone! I'm guessing it's going well. 😁 How much longer do you think you guys will do this? It's worked our really really well, although much different than we originally planned. We did different hotels/houses for the first half of the year and then they did a month to month rental for the second half of the year so we've been in the same house for 6 months while he worked in PA Mondays and Tuesdays and MD Wed through Fridays. That ended up being perfect. We settled a bit right as I was starting to get sick of moving around. He was injured at work the Friday of labor day and had shoulder surgery on 11/15 so we had to shift a bit and he hasn't been working and won't be for another 1-6 months depending on how his therapy goes. Thankfully, we were able to stay in the same house and extended to March 1 when hopefully we will see some progress and reduced PT. We really love our neighborhood and house here. (Its not an option permanently as we will need a first floor bedroom to age in a home comfortably) I think we will try to do contracts that are 6-12 months but we've agreed to keep going until we get sick of it or we find a home and place we really love. For me, that will probably be when one of my parents needs us nearby as they age or we have a grandbaby and we want to be closer. We're giving ourselves permission to adventure and explore and also the freedom to stop at any point.

Omaha? Fabulous place!
The most glorious beach, with lovely white sand. The beach is about 2 miles long and has that great sandspit at the northern end where you can swim in the waves on the ocean side, or the calmness on the inlet side. It’s truly well named, because of course Omaha is a Maori word, and it means “a place of pleasure” - so apt.
Oh. You aren’t talking about that Omaha, the one that’s an hour’s drive north of Auckland? ok, then I’ve got nothing. Sorry.

Checking in to give my glowing review of Omaha! Moved here in 2005 from north/east of Dallas. It has all the pros of a large city without as many of the cons. I live in Dundee (very close to UNO) only 3 miles from downtown/Old Market.
We don't have beaches or mountains or pro sports teams, but there is plenty to do all year. We have an amazing new downtown park and a new science museum on the river, world class zoo, good restaurants (we have multiple James Beard nominee chefs), traffic is manageable (especially after Dallas). If you can't get it here, you can always day trip to Kansas City.
We also have world class Nebraska Medicine. Known for their transplant center, as well as their global center for health which was ground zero for the Ebola outbreak containment. NM is currently undergoing a huge $4B expansion with state and federal funding.
Taxes suck. Omaha and Lincoln and the surrounding suburban cities are the tax base for the entire state. NE is big, and sparsely populated outside of the far east cities. But it's not enough of a deterrent to stop me from choosing to stay now that I've retired.
I have lived in a lot of different cities/states/countries. This is the only one that felt like home when we moved here.

The word Omaha (actually Umoⁿhoⁿ or Umaⁿhaⁿ) in the Omaha language means "Upstream People" or "Against The Current."

I guess I left out we like bars and drinking, a lot. I think we were #5 for bars per state capita.
