I have medium length hair. It is a once or so past my collarbone. As I’ve gotten older it just doesn’t grow past that length. I sometimes go a little above shoulder length but end up growing it a bit. My hair fine but I have a lot of it. I’ve had short hair before but I just don’t think I look great with short hair. My DH prefers longer hair as well.
Lately I’ve had major issues and it has affected my hair. First I believe I’m going thru menopause and I am hot like a LOT. So I am often pulling it up. However since having shingles I have had nerve pain/damage and it is actually painful to put my hair up. I’m guess the best solution is to go with shorter hair but for some reason I am struggling to pull the trigger.
Do you keep your hair the same length or change often?

The advantage with hair, even if it is cut short, it will grow
In general my hair should be much shorter, as a more mature person. For now it is way too long.

I change my hair often, going from mid back to a short bob or even a pixie cut. My hair grows fast so makes change easy. I've been told I look good with any hair style but I don't know if that because people see me in so many different ones over the years.
My MIL has had the same hair for decades.

For some reason, my hair grows too fast. I tend to wear it up in a clip and have done this for the past 2 years because my days were too busy and I wasn’t leaving the house much so it didn’t matter if I fixed it nicely. Since it is usually up, I don’t notice the length as often so it feels like when something occurs to where I want to blow dry it and wear it down, it has grown several more inches in what feels like just a few weeks. It is then the length that I know with just a bit more growth, I can donate it. I then go in and have them put a rubber band on it and cut that so I can send it in. But I really hate it when my hair is long. I should just go in for a trim every 8 weeks, but I never do. I am too old to wear it more than an inch or two below my shoulder.

I'll be 52 in one week. I keep it long and usually straight, often putting it up for work. Sometimes I curl it. I like it long enough to put a bun up high on my head.
Every couple of years I get sick of it and cut it to a chin length bob and start all over.

I always keep it long enough to put up easily. Most of the time that’s somewhere between resting on my shoulders and just below the shoulder. Right now it’s the longest it’s been in probably 15-20 years and at my bra strap. Dh complimented me on it and asked me to keep it long last time I had my hair done and since he rarely does that I did. It’s sooo heavy though (my hairs aren’t thick, I just have a ton of it!) and kinda a pain to deal with. But the kids are growing/grown so I have time to straighten it now. Just got a new curling iron for Christmas so we’ll see if that helps…..no guarantees I won’t get fed up and get it chopped-off someday though.

I don’t think “women of a certain age” should necessarily wear their hair short. Many older women look great with longer hair.
I wear mine short because it’s thin and fine and I feel short looks best on me. There are lots of shorter styles, though. It’s important to frond one that works with your face. Right now I have heavy sideswept bangs and a textured cut and I feel this looks more feminine and prevents me from looking like a mom in the 90s with her short hair curling-iron styled like a helmet. 😂 I’m also meticulous about regular cuts and color so it doesn’t look shaggy and unkempt.
I’ve had pixie cuts at 3 times in my life - my early 20s, my early 30s, and now in my late 40s/early 50s. In between times it’s been anywhere from chin length to mid-back. I likely won’t grow it out again. I like the ease of the shorter cut a lot. I’ll just change the style periodically so it looks fresh and modern.
(The thinness bothers me a lot, so I’m taking a finasteride/minoxidil combo pill in the hopes that it at least doesn’t get any worse.)

I usually have long hair. I cut it about two months ago because I was having part of my head shaved for brain surgery. I cut off three feet and went to chin length. Dramatic difference for me! I’m enjoying my shorter hair. It’s easier to wash and brush. I’m struggling a little with the shaved part growing in but you won’t have to worry about that. I think I’ll keep my hair short for awhile. I like the ease.

I agree with Merge about hair length. Wear it however you want. My hair is usually in a pony or a clip. Or both. I am 73. This length works for me.

I definitely prefer long hair. I’m 50 and keep my hair highlighted and straightened. Personally not a fan of short hair for myself. But there are a lot of nice short styles.

I’m struggling with this right now. I’ve been bald (chemo) and had my hair a bit past my shoulders but never really long. Right now it’s just to my collarbone. My biggest issue is bangs. I wore them for many years but during Covid grew them out. Now I see photos and all I see is forehead. I’ve lost about 40 pounds since July and my face is sagging terribly. I look like I’m well into my 70s…I’ll be 62 in March. I don’t know what to do with my hair. I haven’t colored it in three years and actually like my natural color and the gray I have.

I have long straight hair and bangs. If you look at my kindergarten photo, I had long straight hair and bangs.
In between I did the 70/80s Farrah Fawcett flip, cut my hair short, went chin length, no bangs, etc. But I always go back to long hair and bangs. I've probably had this hair style 50 of my 57 years.
I don't change my hair very much. I like long hair- I wouldn't feel as attractive with short hair, but that is because I have a very square, slightly overweight face. It just makes it look thinner, for some reason.
Edit: I just saw my several years old profile photo. That is about as short as I go- right now it is quite a bit longer than that.

Mine has been long for a long time. I wore a pixie pretty much until I was 20. After growing it out, I realized I was lazy about my hair and really hated going in all of the time.
I typically have it around mid back, and until a few years ago, it wouldn't get longer than a couple of inches past my bra strap. A year before covid it suddenly started growing longer and hit waist length. I cut it to just below my shoulders and donated it. I've grown and donated 2 more times since then, and its long enough to be donated again.

From mid-back to short and cut with a razor on the sides and back to everything in between. Lately it's been a bob, a few inches anove my shoulders. I don't pull my hair up it hurts my scalp. I will pull the front section back or to the side with a teeny claw clip. So ny hair is out of my face but not pulled back tight.

I have bangs and hair that is just below my jaw line. Long hair annoys me when I lie down. I have has it this length for years.
When I was in my 20s I tried a pixie cut. My cousin told me he would call me George with that hair style/length. That convinced me that the look was not good for me. My hair is fine with no body.

I don’t think “women of a certain age” should necessarily wear their hair short. Many older women look great with longer hair. I am “of a certain age” as are many of my friends. I see a lot of Florida women trying to rock the long hair and revealing clothing look but, for most of us, it does us no favors. We don’t need to look matronly as we age, but few of us can pull off trying to look 25. ETA, my hair gets frizzy at the ends as it gets past my shoulders so it accentuates my wrinkles. I start to look like the Sea Hag.

Look in the mirror and ask yourself which style you like wearing the best. For me, I keep mine long and I am starting year 5 of menopause. Short hair on me makes me look so much older. I agree with @merge and think many older women do look better with longer hair. I guess by longer hair I mean the hair that is shoulder length or longer. We were just told that we had to cut it when we had babies, when we aged, whatever. The rules for aging have changed a lot since I was younger. If short hair would make you feel better with your hot flashes, try that. If you don't like it grow it out. My hair seems to grow pretty fast and hasn't lost a lot of thickness, so I keep it longer.

When I was 10 my mother made me cut my hair into a shag style. I looked ridiculous. So, as an adult I keep my hair long and will do so until I'm a little old lady. Right now I'm an oldish lady. I'm not gonna dye my hair either. I want those youngins' to know that I mean business. Hehe. I like to buy cute hair accessories and enjoy trying different stuff.

When I decided to stop coloring my hair a few years ago it was very short. I ended up growing it out because it looked so bad short with my mix of gray/dark. My hair is silver white surrounding my face and gets progressively darker as it gets to the back. I currently wear it in a chin length bob, no fringe. I get it cut at about 8 weeks and it usually hitting shoulders by then. This cut works perfectly with my color and it actually highlights the ombré effect.
I say wear your hair how you enjoy it. I see women everyday, young and old, wearing unflattering styles/colors for them. But it's not my head, so I feel no need to rain on their parade. Now, if some asked for my unvarnished opinion, I would tell them the times I thought they looked best and leave it to them to decide if they want to go back to that look.
My SIL has beautiful red curly hair. It's faded from dark red to almost strawberry as we approach 60. She always gets a wild hair to cut it short and wear it straight. It's not an option for her. It's beautiful when it's curly and suits her. I tell her all the time her curls are beautiful. But we always want what we don't have. I'll never have curls, which I covet.

I don’t like a short cut on myself but often admire them on others. Are you able to pull your hair back (if it were the medium length) in a way that doesn’t cause pain? For instance, I have a couple of pulled back styles- my tight ponytail or bun for when I’m working out or cleaning and just want my hair secure and really out of the way - and I get you don’t want this type due to the nerve damage. But I also do a low ponytail -which is just gathering the hair and wrapping a band around it- it doesn’t pull against my scalp. If I have long side pieces I don’t want (sometimes I leave them for a softer look) I might put in a barrette/clip- not enough to pull hair just to keep some long “bang” from escaping. I also have soft hairbands that keep the hair out of my face and that might be an option(I also have much tighter ones but the softer type are usually cheaper as they are mostly cloth with no elastic).

Why do men feel entitled to judge women’s hair if it is anything other than long and a natural color? I get so tired of the idea that we exist to look the way some man expects us to look. It’s pure misogyny. Your cousin was an asshole and your hair was probably cute that way.

I recently switched from collarbone length to just below my jaw. Still a bob but different, and I’m loving it. If you give it a try now and don’t like it for any reason, you’ll have time to grow it longer and pull it back by summer.
Separately, have you tried taking b complex to help repair the nerve damage? My neurologist suggested a three month course of stress tabs and it really helped.

It's my opinion that hair length should be based on your hairs texture and the shape of your face more so than your age. Currently my hair is a few inches above my shoulders cut into a trendy bob style. I think this style makes my hair look full and healthy while keeping me looking current. It's also a cut that is easy for me to style and gives me some options for different looks.
I have a Pinterest board that I pin photos of hairstyles I like and then show them to my stylist. While we are both happy with my current style/cut we do change up the length based on the seasons or my mood LOL. Photos are so helpful when deciding on a new style.
PS - It'll be a cold day in hell when my DH thinks he can dictate my hairstyle. Thank god he's happy when I'm happy!

I had nerve pain/damage for a different reason) and my neurologist had me take b complex to help the nerve endings heal and reconnect. I started feeling better about two weeks in, and after three months the pain was gone. It’s water soluble so you can take it easily. Nature made has “Stress B Complex” on Amazon. I hope it helps your pain.
