... and similar items?
Those of you over on the scrapbooking board may remember that my inlaws were sending the old family photo albums. I opened the last box today, and it is actually mostly things like bronzed baby shoes and similar items. No one here has an interest in displaying them. Do I just keep them in a box in the shed? Do I junk them? Why did people bronze baby shoes? I have so many questions.

It was a way to preserve sentimental items. lol If you truely have no attachment to them, I would take them to the recycler. Bronze doesn't fetch a whole lot but you might be able to lunch out of them.

Oh!!! You just brought back memories for me. Although I have no clue where there are, I had my mother's baby shoes from the early 1920s and her long blonde curls. I had my son's shoes from the early 1960s; I may have given those to his wife.
His were basic white low laced . Hers were brown with straps with buckles.

DH put his in the trash, after his mother gave us a box of his stuff. I pulled them out and put them on a shelf in the bedroom the grandkids use. The funny thing is my DD thought they were something I picked up at a junk market or antique store. After he passed away and I moved, I turned his John Deere display cabinet with his tractors into what we call the shrine, LOL. She saw the shoes in there and questioned me about them.
It's fine to dispose of them, if they don't bring you joy!

I threw mine out. They were special to my mother, I suppose, but other than the memory of seeing them hanging on the wall a thousand times, they have no significance to me.

I feel like my mom did this for me and my sister, they used to support a frame so she had a baby picture of us. I will have to ask her what she did with them (but maybe I shouldn't or I'll end up with them, LMAO)

I was going to ask this question last week! I have my dad's in my bookcase and I was dusting and though why the heck do I keep these? I probably also have mine in a box in the basement somewhere too. I think I will toss them!

They get donated fairly frequently to the hospice thrift store where I volunteer. If you think you don't want the bronzed shoes of someone you know, imagine paying for those of a total stranger. We toss them.

Here's an idea I saw on Pinterest - use them as Christmas tree ornaments. I think DH's are in a box somewhere attached to an old picture frame. However, his mother also had his first cowboy boots bronzed. Those are actually cute and I have had them out at various times. Bonus on those is I can use them as a vase, which I sometimes do when it is Rodeo season here.

I use my son’s as a bookend. Both shoes are on one base. I am too sentimental to discard them. I doubt he will discard them when I am gone but I know my non sentimental daughter in-law will want to do just that. Ha

I love the idea of making them into ornaments! Put the persons name and birthdate on the bottom or somewhere.

When I moved from TX to CA a year ago, I STRUGGLED with boxes and boxes of sentimental keepsakes. I was majorly downsizing and knew I wouldn’t have room for them. It’s not like I displayed them, or even pulled them out occasionally. They just sat in boxes. But how could I get rid of them? It was a torturous decision, but somehow, I managed to get rid of 99% of it. Now, looking back, I wish I would have kept it all—the ugly brown pinch pots I made in elementary school art, the dented pewter candy dish that sat on our living room table for years, the old family hymnal that you couldn’t even look at without it falling apart, the weird looking jar full of baby teeth… Just kidding. I don’t miss any of it and haven’t even thought about it until now… dump them.

Well - I guess I am the sole dissenter here. I have mine as well as a baby cup and silver ware. I also have pitcher that was my great grandmothers and an ice shaver and an old, old iron as well as a set of pretty bowls that my dad got for my grandmother during WWII. I have all of that and more in a display cabinet in my living room. It's a reminder to me of my heritage. Silly I guess.

I don't have any bronzed baby shoes - I don't think that was a thing in my family - but I do have a variety of family items that I keep. My goal (and I'm close) is to have them all either in use (dishes) or on display...not stored in boxes. If they are special enough to me, I want to see them...and I want my kids to see them and hear the stories and the reasons I'm keeping them so that hopefully some of them will outlive me One of my plans for 2024 is to make a shadow box with my mum's baby dresses and her baby photos. I also have the family christening gown (worn by three generations) but I hesitate to put it in a shadowbox until my kids are older (17, 23, 32) in case grandchildren arrive and a fourth generation might wear it.

Just because I don't keep bronzed baby shoes doesn't mean I don't keep anything at all. You are making a very incorrect assumption here. I have a number of treasured family heirlooms that I display and use. Some of value and some just sentimental.

I thought the shoes were cute as a tree ornament, but wouldn't they be heavy for an ornament?
Off to metal recycling would be my plan.

I had my oldest two kids baby shoes bronzed in the late 90s. About 5 years ago I threw them out! If I can toss my own kids bronzed shoes, I also give you permission to toss yours.

The only bronzed shoes I know of are my fathers. IF they are still in a condition in which they can be displayed at all, then I would likely put one in a shadowbox with a photo of him and use that ornament idea for the other.
I haven't seen them in a good 25years, though, and I seem to recall them being in rough shape then, so if they ever resurface their condition may dictate that they be discarded.

My mom has a hand-painted porcelain baby shoe with my name and birth stats on it. Assuming it will be mine someday, I love the ornament idea.
