I woke up a few more times than usual last night and my dh texted me to tell me there was a 2.3 mag earthquake with the epicenter in Rockville, MD (where I live). I was wondering why I woke up at such an unusual time and then realized that it was the time the minor quake hit. I guess it woke me up. We had no damage (we did have damage in 2011 when a slightly larger quake hit our area. We were at the beach in Delaware when that hit and I remember lying on the beach and it felt like the ground was rolling).
Some idiot on the news was claiming that we don't get quakes here so it must have been something else. "facepalm"

Glad it was small. Earthquakes are rare in a lot of states but do happen.
I wouldn't have felt that small of a quake but I born and raised in southern Ca where we get large quakes. Most recent was 2019 an hour is from me and 7.6 or so quake. Then next dsy larger one.
Those are not fun.

I had no idea. I felt the one in 2011 - was at Kindergarten orientation for my son when that happened, and like you said, it felt like the floor was rolling. I think that was the year we had a tornado, earthquake and hurriane in rapid succession!

I was awake all night on and off but we live an hour at least from Rockville so I think it was more my anxiety at starting back to work after being off for a month rather than an earthquake!

We had a small earthquake in NYC several years ago. I was sitting down and for a few seconds I thought my chair was moving but it was really brief. I almost would have doubted myself except I glanced at the dining room chandelier and it was definitely swinging foe a bit longer. Upon talking to other people, those that were outside walking around did not feel it.

Rockville is an appropriate name for the place to experience an earthquake.

I have no scientific basis for this, but I think people experience earth quakes differently. A few years ago, we were having a lot of earthquakes in Oklahoma, probably due to oil industry practices. I always felt like I could hear the rumble of the earthquake before I felt the shake. The rumble upset me more than the shake.
My friends and family all looked at me like I was crazy when I described the rumble. The only sounds they heard were objects shaking as the ground shook. The sound I always heard was the earth rumbling before I felt the shake.
It was strange too how I'd be out w/ a group of friends and someone would say "Did you feel that? Another earthquake!" Half the people wouldn't have felt anything. We'd look it up on the earthquake app and sure enough there had been a small earthquake near us.

We had one in SC a few years ago. Well, it was in NC but we felt it in upstate SC. The bed was shaking and it was a weird sensation. I remember the one in 2011 when I was living in Maryland. I was driving and thought my car's transmission was messing up. I went into Hobby Lobby and it looked like a bomb had gone off -- there was so much broken glass and stuff everywhere.

auntkelly I have heard an earthquake approaching before. It all depends on the type of earthquake (deep underground, a surface roller, etc), and where you are at. ellemkay I’ve been in my car when an earthquake hit. I was stopped at a red light and thought something was wrong with my engine because of the noise I was hearing. I looked up and saw the traffic light swaying.

We had one in Colorado years ago that barely registered, but they are rare here.
My cousin said the one yesterday in Japan was a big one. They really felt it.

Half the people wouldn't have felt anything. We'd look it up on the earthquake app and sure enough there had been a small earthquake near us. It can also depend on where you are. If you are in a house with loose windows or something else that will rattle, you can hear it coming. We lived in California during the Northridge earthquake in 92? 93?. You could hear the windows start to rattle before you felt the shaking. The dog learned after just a few aftershocks that rattling windows=run to the doorway! I remember the 2011 earthquake--wasn't that the one near Richmond, VA? It seemed to go on forever. We had just moved into our house in Woodbridge. We had a playdate. I was in the basement unpacking with the girls and the boys were upstairs. It took me several seconds to figure out that it was an earthquake and not a nearby explosion. It seemed to go on for quite a while. I don't remember anything broken, but I do remember not liking that I was separated from the boys!

I live about 25 miles outside of Rockville (Northern VA) and did not feel or hear last night's earthquake. I think I was just going to bed but not quite asleep yet. I was very tired so I may have just not been consciously aware of it due to being half asleep. I heard and felt the 2011 earthquake in our area though. I was home from work (it was mid-day) and helping DD2 pack because she was leaving for college move-in the next day. (Move-in and start of fall semester at her university ended up being postponed a week due to the earthquake.) We heard the rumbling quite loud. The windows and storm door rattling sounded like someone was trying to break in through the back door. I may or may not have shrieked.
