For some reason I thought of him and the cult he had and the outcome etc.
If you are too young, here are some links for you.

I was actually talking with my daughter about him the other day as an example of how people can fall prey to a cult.
She realized during the discussion that the phrase “don’t drink the look-aid” likely came from the mass suicide/murder he orchestrated.
I vaguely remember it happening but like others, I learned more as I got older and spent some time reading about cults.

Indeed I do. What a tragic situation that was.

I remember it from the time, and I also read a book about the whole story a few years ago. Such an awful tragedy.

it happened in our town.. though I didn't live here then, dh did.. you couldn't forget it. there is a large memorial in oakland cemetery where many were buried..and it comes up on the news once in a while. our local congresswoman, jackie speier, survived 5 bullets as she got off the plane to investigate as an aide to another congressman.
it was a terrible time

I lived in San Francisco right near the People's Temple right before they moved to Guyana, and was there to see how devastated people were after the 18 Nov massacre. 9 days later mayor Harvey Milk was killed. It was a tough time to be a 13-14 year old girl in a big city, with big city things happening when I came from a town of 500 in rural OR and grew up without tv.

I have very clear memories brought up every time I hear or see Jackie Speier! What a strong woman!!
And yes that was the reason for 'don't drink the kool-aide'

I was a young adult living and working in Oakland at the time. It was horrifying. Then a week or two later came the Moscone/Milk shootings, and we thought at first they were related.
Awful times for the SF Bay Area.
Side note: an Oakland police officer was murdered in 1999 by a young man whose mom escaped the Jonestown massacre while pregnant with him. His father died there.
ETA I’m also a big fan of Jackie Speier. She’s survived some terrible tragedies in her lifetime. I met her once when she was still in the state Assembly.

Yes, cult leader unconditionally followed to the death.
MAGA cult leader, followers have and will follow to the death or at least incarceration!

Yes. Leo Ryan was my hometown rep. I absolutely remember this and have read about this extensively. It wasn't likely the source of don't drink the kool aid, it was definitively. The whole thing was horrific. (I was very young.)
My mom interacts/interacted with Jackie Speier as her local congresswoman.

I was 6 so don't really remember this much other than my dad making references to it for quite some time afterwards, and there was some movie made about it on TV I think.
I will never really understand how anyone gets pulled into a cult. But then again it's like a form of religion and plenty of people are ok with that...IDK, just seems like a lot of people aren't very good critical thinkers and they fail to ask themselves the most important question: What's In It For Them? Rather than what's in it for me.
So many lost, gullible people looking for answers and guidance.
I just watched the HBO show about the Mother Love cult, the one who overdosed on colloidal silver and turned blue and drank herself to death while blaming her drunken bad behavior on "the galactics" who channeled through her. I particularly enjoyed "Robin Williams" screaming that he ordered CHICKEN PARMESAN YOU ASSHOLES AND FUCKERS Lol. Poor Robin Williams sure is a dick as a "galactic"!
And she STILL has followers. It's insane.

I'm sure I read a post here not that long ago, where someone was not happy about the use of the phrase "drink(ing) the Kool-Aid" because the phrase originated from an event that killed so many people.

Yes, cult leader unconditionally followed to the death. MAGA cult leader, followers have and will follow to the death or at least incarceration! What??? Easy enough! Jim Jones lead his followers to their deaths. TFG is leading his followers to at least prison, but if they start a war they will face death.. He lead one, make that two, to their deaths J6!!

He lead one, make that two, to their deaths J6!! Not all cults result in death, for goodness sake. But if you want to argue that MAGA is a cult leading to death, the 17,000 hydroxycholorquine deaths might seem less crazy than a war.

I wasn't born yet, but am aware of what happened. I also have a morbid sense of curiosity when it comes to some things I read.
Jeff Guinn's The Road to Jonestown is a fantastic read.

Grew up in north central CA and am just old enough to remember. I have probably read all of the books and watched all of the documentaries. It's awful. I don't think all those people willingly died, however, and to the extent people did, they were sleepless and starving.

Oh, that’s the book I read. It was really well written and explained so much. I was in high school when it happened and didn’t understand how it could.

I don't know if I remember it happening, but I definitely remember the movie and then learning more about it as I got older.
Also, I often think of those Heaven's Gate people who died thinking they were going to hitch a ride to Heaven with a UFO trailing the Hale-Bopp comet. That was so weird.
