I’ve taken up crocheting this past year and would like some resources, other than the limited selection at the craft store, for natural fiber yarns. I’d like to use less acrylic and nylon. What are your go-to places to buy? Specifically single-color skeins in worsted or bulky weight.
Thanks!

Local yarn shops, but I don’t personally know of any in the Houston area. If you can find one though…gold. In the yarns available as well as the expertise and camaraderie. If you’re ever near north San Antonio area I recommend a quick trip out of town to The Tinsmith’s Wife in Comfort. Just noticed they sell online, that might be an option, even from your LYS. I always love to go and feel it though, see the colors in person.

Do you belong to Ravelry.com? The Advanced Search there lets you search for LYS (local yarn stores) - here’s a link, though I’m not sure if it works if you’re not a Ravelry member. LYS searchJust in case you’re not - Ravelry is a huuuuuge database of patterns, free and paid patterns. Members post their ‘projects’ using the patterns so you can see what your pattern looks like when worked by others. You can search for yarn, and see what others have made from it and how it works up. You can buy many/most of the patterns through Ravelry. (You don’t actually buy them from Ravelry, but you are linked to the pattern designer’s store). And there are lots and lots of forums and groups, about almost every topic you can think of (not just crochet or knitting related); the ‘Big 6’ forums that everyone belongs to be default, are a great place to get help if you’re unsure of something to do with crochet or knitting.

I agree about Ravelry.com It's free to join. Like KiwiJo mentioned you can do searches for yarn (advanced searches based on fiber, size, all sorts of things) and then it will pull up a bunch of possibilities. Click on the yarn suggested and if it's still available it will show you where you can buy it online and in an local yarn shop. Search for a really popular yarn like Malabrigo Rios and it will bring up a lot of online stores. Hope this helps.

I really like Purl Soho's yarns. They're solid color natural fibers. I just some cashmere/alpaca for a sweater and it's devine! They're also having a 20% off sale through Tuesday. www.purlsoho.com

Dammit people! I’m on a “no more yarn” program until I use some of the stuff I’ve purchased in the last year since I took up crocheting. I buy for a project so it is all planned for - but man I don’t need any more! lol
I have bookmarked Knitpickers though - yay for another place that will ship to Canada!

I have bought a bunch from Jimmy Beans Wool online, but I mostly shop locally. I think Tolt, which is local to me, has an online shop and is pretty great.
I don’t know if you get to Austin often, but Hill Country Weavers there is awesome. I don’t know the Houston yarn shops!
