Do you ever check the map of registered sex offenders living near your home, school, or office? It is something that my neighbors and I kept an eye on when living in my old neighborhood. The registered offender map shows where they live and when you click on a listing, you could see a photo and what their crime was. I can’t remember how I first learned that this was available online, but when I did, I checked out numerous areas that might affect my son such as our home, his school, and his father’s home. There was never anyone living in my actual neighborhood, but a few miles from my home was a mobile home park and there were two men living there that were registered to the same home. I figured it was some sort of halfway house or something. I just wanted to familiarize myself with their faces when my son was little. I also needed to check the route that he walked home from school when he was old enough to walk home. Fortunately there was never anyone on the streets he used.
I was watching a show this morning when they mentioned a registered offender they were looking into as a possible offender for the crime they were working on. I hadn’t looked to see how close my new house was to anyone on the registered list. I was extremely surprised and relieved to see there are only two offenders in the entire city. One is in a medical facility and the other in a mobile home park on the edge of the city. It had been years since I checked my old house so I did a quick search for that area too. There are 35 offenders listed in the area near my old home! And that was just the area of the map showing on my screen, not the entire city. I am positive there was nowhere near that number when I last checked that map. And it is a fairly expensive area with most of the homes listing for over a million dollars. I am guessing these men must be either renting a room or living with a family member. Not that an offender can’t afford a million dollar home, but it seems less likely. When I zoomed in, I noted that some of the listings were in a mobile home park and at least two were in an apartment complex.
Now I know that some of the people on the list are required to register due to what I would consider a benign crime such as urinating in public. The California list no longer contained a picture of the person and instead of listing their crime, it listed how dangerous the offender was considered to be such as high risk, below average risk, etc. The Oregon list had a link to their offender page which showed their photo and listed the crime, but only in general terms such as rape 1, Fel.
Have you ever checked out your community? Did any offenders live close enough to cause you concern?

I remember looking at the registry long ago when I lived in Indianapolis, in the early days when it became easy to search by area online. So yes, I have looked at it. But seriously, it is often not monitored or updated, and people move all the time. The ones to be most worried about are the people in your family, all the ones who haven't been caught or have any reason (like supervision or parole, etc) to abstain from assaulting anyone. You/your children are far more likely to be victimized by someone you know, and bc it is so rarely reported, the number of sex offenders out there is expontially higher than those on the registry. Stay aware of your surroundings, believe your instincts, trust your children and give them the words and opportunity to talk about it, and live your life. That's how I feel about it. And I'm a social worker who has seen some stuff.

My mom had mail stolen out of a US Post Office box and the mail was later located. They provided for free Experian monitoring program. She gets monthly reporst from them, whick also includes if there were any new sex offenders registed in her area. As tmarschall mentioned, be careful out there and be aware of your surroundings. I agree that the databases are never accurate and way out of date for numerous reasons.

I did when we were planning on having children, I think awareness is a good thing. An elementary school is just a little ways down the street and there was a big hubbub in the neighborhood when someone was going to let their brother, who was a registered sex offender, move in. I’m not social with any of the neighbors and I don’t walk in the neighborhood, so it never occurred to me to look.

Thanks for raising this issue. You motivated me to check out the situation near our DD's home. They have a toddler girl.
I've looked at Megans Law website as well as FamilyWatchdogUS. Both have dots pinpointing addresses where offenders live. I can't find a legend to explain terms or colors of the pin dots on either site.
Do you have any experience with these sites?

I just looked it up for the first time. None right by me. But there was a child molester a few blocks away. And someone convicted of murder about 5 blocks away. He was convicted in 2001. How is someone who took a life in 2001 already out of prison?

I did check out the website when my kids were little. I believe it was the elementary school that sent the parents the information on how to look it up.

I've sometimes wondered why sex offenders are registered and mapped like that, but other kinds of criminals aren't. Wouldn't you like to know if your neighbors have been convicted of armed robbery, battery, kidnapping, carjacking, burglary, manslaughter, DUI, etc.? Sex crimes are awful but all of these things pose a potential danger to neighbors.

I will go check out the two you mentioned to see how they differ from what I used.

I haven't looked in many years. But I will Google patients who come in as prisoners, because I want to know what they did.
One time I was checking the ankles for swelling (he had on jeans) and found...an ankle monitor. Googled him. Pedophile out on parole. Oh my! I kept our very young CNA out of there and let him deal with this old hag instead.
He wasn't an issue at all, but I don't think it's a bad thing to act prudently.
And yes, I was perfectly respectful to him bc I am there to take care of people, period, and he was respectful to all of us. I think he was surprised by that. He made it a point to thank me for how he was treated while he was there.
I wouldn't trust a pedophile but I sometimes feel bad for them for what must be a horrible curse. I can't imagine it, having a sexual attraction to those who could never be consenting partners.

I don't really check much. I noticed that most of them live in one of the many apartments we have in the area.

I did years ago, when my kids were smaller. My neighborhood lit up like a Christmas tree. I guess you've got to be careful all the time.

Not until I saw a car marked probation and parole at a house across the street from me. And yep, young male sex offender involving a young girl living there with his Dad. It showed his name, age, offense, conviction and what car he drives and where he works. I never see him except him leaving for and coming home from work. Doesn’t appear to leave the house otherwise. Probation and Parole shows up quite often.

I did once, years ago but I've never felt the need to again even now that I live in a different area. I don't have kids and generally prefer to think the best of people.
I worked at a business once who employed someone on the sex offender registry website. He was very open about what happened that led to his situation and would tell anyone that asked (drunken stupidity). He was the kind of guy that spent his free time doing community service projects and volunteering with his church. He helped the homeless and would give someone in need the shirt off his back. When I worked with him he was in his mid 50s and still had to go get his picture taken and report his location for a crime that happened 20+ years prior. Anyway... it never failed that once or twice a year someone would come into the business and ask if he worked there. We'd say yes and they would demand to talk to the business owner. The business owner would come up and listen to all the reasons they said he should be fired and kindly tell the women to leave. It was so sad to see someone that had spent so much time and effort turning their life around get drug through the mud over and over again. Experiencing that made me realize that I would rather be the kind of person that judges others based on my experiences with them than be the kind of person that looks at others through a lens of constant suspicion.

Thanks! I was on that page but I don't see a legend there explaining what the difference types of dots mean once you see a map of a certain area. Now that I clicked that link, the correct page isn’t there anymore. If you put in the location you want to check out and see the map with the colored pins, look at the top of the map and you will see the link to the map legend. It explains what each color means. In brief, red is an offense against a child, yellow is rape, blue is sexual battery, and green is other offense. These are further defined by the two shades of each color signifying offender home, offender other. Maybe offender other is their place of employment?

We looked when we were debating on moving or not. Interesting enough, no one came up in our neighborhood before we moved. And now there is one --- he was convicted in Oct 2023 for soliciting a minor. According to the website, he is only 20 so I am curious now about the circumstances.

I have never checked it but I don’t have any children. Recently though we got a postcard in the mail from the Texas Department of Public Safety alerting us about a registered sex offender who had moved into the area. I had never seen that before.

When I first moved to my new house a few years ago I looked out of curiosity, and wasn't surprised what I found. Looked again tonight, about the same. There are a handful in my neighborhood area and because of where I live, I'm not surprised to be honest.

I knew someone who is a registered sex offender. He got caught trying to meet up with young teens on the internet. He was in my brother-in-law's band. He was kicked out of the band.
I ran into him at Walmart once, which is fairly close to the school I work at.
But I've never looked at a site.

Sex crimes are awful but all of these things pose a potential danger to neighbors. No. People are entitled to their privacy and people also change. They could have gotten in a fight or gotten a DUI when they were young and dumb. It shouldn’t follow them their entire lives. The difference is that the majority of sex offenders can’t be rehabilitated. They can be taught to not act on those feelings but they always have them. Besides, every crime is public knowledge. This is only letting people with kids know that they are close to danger.

I decided to check my area since I had never looked into it after I moved to my new house a few years ago. There are only a handful within a 3-mile radius, BUT - one is a woman, who as a former teacher at 29 had sex with her 15 year old student! This happened in 2010, about 200 miles away. She spent 1 year in prison, and now lives in a *very* nice neighborhood here in my town. I was definitely not expecting to find that in my search!
