Are you talking like an Amazon Echo or a Google whatever?
If so, I have a Show, multiple dots, and the original Echo from when you had to wait for an invitation.
Love mine

We have an Alexa and then we have a Bose that we pair with DH's phone so we can take it tailgating and out on our boat.

I have 1 Show, 2 alexa dots and 1 google home mini. I use them for various things. I love them all and won't give them up. My ODS tells me I am setting myself for when the machines rise up. That I'll be one of the first to go. Maybe, but at least I won't live in the apocalypse afterwards.

We have a few Apple HomePods for standalone music players in our offices and bedrooms.
We have Sonos on our tv and audio system.
We do not - and will not - have Alexa.

I have 2 Echo Dots - 1 downstairs and 1 upstairs. I think the most asked question for me is "Alexa, what is the temperature?" Or recently, "Alexa, what is the windchill?"

We have a few Google Home Minis at home and at the lake cabin. We have our lights automated and use them for other everyday tasks too.

I have none and really see no point in one. Nor do I have front door cameras or any of that stuff. I don't understand why people have this technology.
Just don't try to take away my Bluetooth speakers...

Just don't try to take away my Bluetooth speakers... I find it a little hard to believe that you "don't understand" why people have cameras. It's not for you, fine, but I'm pretty sure you can grasp why someone would use these things when you yourself use a Bluetooth speaker. We use it because it's useful to us in some way. As for me, I mainly use the echos to control the lights, set alarms and timers, the Christmas trees during that season, and play music. The cameras have come in handy a few times, especially when my neighbor's husband lost his mind and started acting a fool and it was all on camera, with audio.

My ds tells me that I need to be nicer to my Alexa (and to Siri) or I'll be the first to go when they take over. hahaha I have been known to tell one or the other of them that they're stupid. They always reply with some version of "I'm doing my best" or "I'm just trying to be helpful". However, I know they're not doing their best when they tell me they can't play a song that they JUST played for me the previous day! Yeah, I'll be in the first group to go. But as you said, we'll be spared life in the apocalypse afterwards. haha

I have an echo dot but rarely use it. If I’m in the kitchen for a while I’m more likely to have the tv on. My grandson uses it more, getting Alexa to sing nursery rhymes 😊

Just don't try to take away my Bluetooth speakers... A lot of us do see a "point" though. Personally I use Alexa because it's fun. I enjoy making playlists on Spotify and asking Alexa to play them. And I enjoy being able to ask Alexa to play whatever song comes into my head. I'm old enough to remember the days of LPs (only) and how we had a couple particular favorite songs and we'd sit there lifting up the arm of the record player and setting it back down in the groove for song, over and over. haha Now I can just say "Alexa play xyz" and then "Alexa repeat that song" and she'll just play it forever until I tell her to stop. And Siri is very helpful in the car for directions. Again, remember the days when we'd have to find somewhere to pull over so we could look at a paper map? Does that help you understand a few reasons why many of us like this technology? It's okay of course if it's not for you, but maybe think a minute about why other people might find it helpful and/or enjoyable.

Just don't try to take away my Bluetooth speakers... Anyone who has ever had something stolen off of their porch or out of their driveway would likely disagree with you. Around here when someone has a pet go missing, one of the first things that people ask is, “Do you or any of your neighbors have doorbell cameras that might have spotted the dog/cat in their yard?” We have our smart cameras for security primarily due to DH’s business. We know of at least a couple other people in his line of work who have had their work vehicles either broken into or outright stolen right from their driveways. It’s also nice to get the advance notification that someone is coming up to the house before they approach the door. DD uses her Google Home mini the most, to control lights and a fan, set alarms, help with research/homework, listen to music. We have our other one on the main floor set up for automations to turn lights on and off and so we can control devices like the heat and A/C with our phones when we’re not home.

I have some bluetooth speakers I use on occasion, but I don't have any smart speakers or anything like that. Hell, I'll just tell you that half the time I listen to CDs on my boombox. Hahaha... I also don't watch TV. And I read paper books. I spend all day working on a computer so I'm not a total luddite. And none of it comes from a holier than thou attitude, I have a variety of reasons for why I don't do some technologies, mostly because they just don't work for my lifestyle.

Does that help you understand a few reasons why many of us like this technology? It's okay of course if it's not for you, but maybe think a minute about why other people might find it helpful and/or enjoyable. I find it so helpful in the kitchen if my hands are covered in gunk and I use the last of whatever. I am just low enough on the ADD scale and of a certain age, if I have a thought, I need to get it down. So I yell out to Alexa to add whatever to the grocery list. Or set a timer, or ask a question on what I was just asked about by DH. Or pull up a recipe. So.many.things. The bathroom google mini is my speaker. I say good morning and it gives me a quick rundown of the day's events, news headlines and plays my music while I get ready. I use the one in the bedroom to play brown noise when I go to sleep, on a timer. The Echo Show has a running picture show sometimes, like a digital frame. A lot of people have those. It also keeps me up on when an item in my cart drops in price. Or tells a dirty joke. Or tells us funny bedtime stories when we are bored. I have porch lights set to come on and go off at certain times. So when I come home it is not in the dark. I don't live in the best little town on earth and I like it light at the door. Other lights in the house come on and go off. It makes it homey without me having to go around and click them all off and on. Also a couple have really hard to get to on/off switches. It just makes it easier. My Ring doorbell lets me see the front door drop-offs. To know they were dropped off where/when they said. I can alert DH, at home, to bring something in when they just do a drop off with no doorbell so it doesn't sit on the porch all day. It is motion sensored. I can see who is at my door when I am at work and talk to them, tell them I am not interested or to come back. How the weather looks to the south of me. Did I just hear a noise out front, I don't have to run up there, I can open my Ring app. So, @peano, I can see where some people don't want to understand/embrace technology that have been developed and given to them. That's fine. But to say you don't understand why OTHERS use it is just well...hard-headed. I don't want to be mean and use other words. But you yourself, said "don't take away my BT speakers". Isn't that just another form of technology that you use. I mean, why don't you just use the device itself to hear things? Or earbuds, headphones? See?

Same. Our phones listen to us and that's bad enough! I do love my bluetooth speakers though. Listen to it constantly on the weekends. I just don't understand the need for a device to listen to you. How hard is it to "manually" google something, turn on the radio, change the channel, etc. That's the epitome of lazy.

How hard is it to "manually" google something, turn on the radio, change the channel, etc. That's the epitome of lazy. As naby64 mentioned above, it's very useful in the kitchen when your hands might be covered in bread dough, or raw chicken juices... you can just ask Alexa to play whatever, or add something to the grocery list. etc. As for changing the channel...why not embrace new technology when it comes out if we want to? Do you remember the days before we had TVs with remote control? We had to actually get up out of our chairs and switch channels or turn off the TV. Is it the epitome of laziness to use the remote controls that we all have now? I suspect that if you watch TV you use a remote. -- And anyway, how it is it much different if I ask Alexa to change the channel vs. me pushing a button? -- My Alexa still doesn't change channels, but I think I need to get on her to do more around our house.

We have several Alexas throughout the house. Mostly they’re used for timers and alarms, but we also use them to turn on lamps in the main room. And we can ask Alexa to play music through our Sonos speaker for better sound.

Just don't try to take away my Bluetooth speakers... With medical deliveries it comes in very handy. Not all require signature. Only dd's IgG kit does because it is $10,000 worth if stuff in a box. But during the pandemic it was left at the door because they didn't want patients to be exposed to illness nor their drivers. So if I was out walking the dogs or running an errands, I woukd quickly get home to take it inside if no one else was home. I don't have 10k sitting around to buy a new 4 week kit. Once they left, it was on me to get it safely inside. And if extra kit items are delivered no signature is required but those items arent cheap (like tubing). Signatures came back about 2.5 years after the start of the pandemic. Same for ds's formula. At $3600 a month, once it's left at the door, it is on me to get it inside.

If you think they're listening then your phone is too. A friend works at a bank and says people would come in to pay their bills because they don't want their banking online. How do you think the bank is doing it, by carrier pigeon? pantsonfire did the signatures come back for all packages or just medical ones? I'm in Canada and haven't signed for anything since 2020. I'm like naby64 I use Alexa mainly in the kitchen. When my hands are dirty I ask her what is 14 fl oz in ml? Or tell her to add something to my list so I don't forget later and I get her to control Spotify, the volume or skip a song. I haven't gotten anything more than a speaker, I had remotes for my Christmas lights already, and have a programmable thermostat, I personally don't have a need for the doorbell camera. I would get other things if and when I had the need.
