Aw, that’s a real bummer! But you seem to have a great attitude and that will take you far.

Well, I didn't get the job. My interview was today and I thought it went really well. The job seemed like a great fit for me and the work environment that was described was absolutely great. One day a week work from home, make your own schedule, independent work. Just... ideal. When I left the interview I said to myself that if I didn't get it at least I knew it wasn't because I botched something. I did a good job in there! I got a phone call just a couple hours later where I was informed that they went with another candidate but they did compliment me and say it was a hard choice. Meh. I knew it was a long shot but I'd really hoped for those couple of hours that my situation was going to improve. But you can't win em all. I'm sorry.. I have been to so many interviews that I just knew I killed it and it was always 'the other person'... hang in there. I'm back looking for something myself. I try not to get my hopes up.

I suspect that the position was filled by someone in the company but they went through the interview process for formality. However, this allowed you to hone your interview skills and be ready for the next interview situation.

I'm sorry, how disappointing for you. Perhaps you could you let them know how keen you are for that job, and that if anything changes to give you a call. A number of times I have seen successful candidates pull out at the last minute because they get a better offer, and then the job is offered to the next candidate.

I'm sorry that you didn't get the job, but please don't ever lose that wonderful, confident attitude that you have. It will take you far! The right job will come along.

However, this allowed you to hone your interview skills and be ready for the next interview situation. This is what I suspect too, in fact the entire recruitment process I figured it's what would happen. It's very frustrating that employers will blatantly waste candidate's time for formality's sake. When we all arrived for the test I asked what department everyone worked for and two of them worked in the department that was hiring already. And wouldn't you know, there were two openings. So from that point on I just worked my best to impress but I think that ultimately they just really weren't interested in pursuing an outside candidate. I'm sorry, how disappointing for you. A number of times I have seen successful candidates pull out at the last minute because they get a better offer, and then the job is offered to the next candidate. I did send a follow up email and let them know that. You never know what's going to happen! Two of the people I work with now are not the people that were originally hired for their positions, they were the second choice that started a few months after the original candidate didn't work out.

That's so frustrating, and such a waste of everyone's time. We had a new guy start in October. We tried to get an internal person first, but had no luck, so we went external. He is already leaving, so we are advertising again for that role. We would prefer to recruit internally, because the person would already know the systems and the business. If we had an internal applicant, we wouldn't even bother interviewing anyone external, unless the internal person was a real dud. Why would I want to waste MY time interviewing someone we had no intention of hiring, let alone wasting the applicant's time?! Hey, just a thought..... you don't want to move to Melbourne Australia do you? I've got a job for ya!

You know on one hand I guess it's good that your new hire is leaving already since that means he obviously wasn't right for the job and you can move on without wasting more resources on him. On the other hand, the entire recruiting and hiring process is so annoying and I'm sure you just want to be done! I'm a huge proponent of promoting from within whenever possible, just be up front about it! Save everyone the time and hassle. I bet your benefits out there are fantastic. If only.

Update 3/29: The recruitment list was valid for six months and I just got called for an interview in another department for the same position. Interview is on Tuesday! I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this department but I just don't know much about it. Fingers crossed it will be good news this time!

Interview was today. It was...strange. As soon as I sat down the panel explained I had 20 minutes to answer 10 questions and if they felt I was taking too long on any one question they would interrupt me and move on to accommodate the time limit.
So I gave brief, general answers only and really didn't feel like I was able to give detail or specific examples but I suppose that's what they wanted. At the end of the interview I asked a question and was told they were seeking a candidate that has experience in payroll, accounts payable, and grant writing. Absolutely NONE of that was in the job posting and they should have been able to tell by my application that I do not have experience in those areas. So yeah, while they were polite and seemed like a nice office I'm not sure I have much a future there. They said they will contact me within 2 weeks to let me know if I'm invited to a second interview.

So this is the second time that they have (potentially) wasted not only your time, but their own time too!

The whole time they were explaining the desired skills I was like "so why am I here and why are you guys here?!"

How freaking frustrating! I would cross off that company as a place I want to work. They seem pretty disfunctional.
