Why do I always feel guilty applying for jobs??? I'm not upset when others leave for better opportunities, I'm happy for them! But I just can't help but feel so guilty for even considering leaving. It's only myself and one other person that do what I do in the office and she is retiring in a few months. If I actually do get this new position (it's a long shot) that would leave my office high and dry and likely that person will feel too bad and delay her retirement. At the same time it's an amazing opportunity for me and a massive increase is salary. There are two positions available and it's not a job that is open to the general public so I'm feeling like I might just stand a chance. Please keep your fingers crossed for me peas! Update: I got an email that I am qualified for the position and was invited to take the test next week. The top 5 scoring candidates from testing will get interviews. Thanks for all of the encouragement and please keep your fingers crossed for me! Update #2: The test was done on Tuesday of this week and I had mixed feelings when I left. Overall I felt like I did well but I was the first person to leave with an hour to spare on the clock. Today I got an email saying I ranked #1 on testing! I have never ranked #1 on anything in my whole life. That means I am guaranted an interview. So exciting! Final update in last post. Thank you all for your encouragement!

Do. Not. Feel. Guilty.
If they are so dependent upon any one person that it’s a big problem if they leave, that’s the company’s failing to properly plan for business continuity. That is NOT your responsibility.
Apply for opportunities you’re excited about because it’s in your best interests. You don’t owe the company anything besides doing your best work while you work there. Good luck!
ETA: Your coworker is retiring - she doesn't feel guilty about leaving. The company knows she's retiring and they haven't made a plan. Don't make decisions based on the needs of people/companies who don't make decisions based on you.

Do not feel guilty at all. I learned the hard way not to be a loyal to a company. It's business, companies do what they need to do to stay viable all the time. You need to do the same! Look at all the mass layoffs happening left and right.
I wish you the best of luck pursuing this new opportunity!

I totally understand. I stayed at a job for 20 years and I should have tried to move upwards, and I didn't. I made decent money. Had a little retirement. Lots of time off. But when my boss retired, I was out. No severance or anything and it was near the end of that recession (around 2014 ish I think) I had to use my retirement to keep my house. Basically, had to start over late in life.
You need to look out for yourself!! Don't pass up an opportunity! Good luck to you!!

Don’t feel guilty! The last job I left, I left for reasons other than salary. But I easily found another role that was a great fit and nearly a 30% increase in pay. I felt terribly guilty leaving my mentee (it had been 2 years) but my guy asked me the following: if your current company offered you xxxxxxx.xx (same as new company) would you be willing to give a third of it to mentee? Do you like him THAT much? Nope.. jumped ship- best decision ever! Btw- brought mentee to new company 6 months later

Good luck! It sounds like an opportunity that you can't miss.
That guilt you are feeling means you are a good person, but that doesn't mean you have to stay at your current job.

Good luck! And definitely don’t feel guilty about seeking out opportunities that might benefit you personally. No one is going to look out for you better than you can yourself! Fingers crossed that you get it.

I get why you would feel a little guilty quitting your job at this particular time with your coworker about to retire. However, most companies wouldn't hesitate to lay you off if they didn't want you there anymore. They wouldn't care if you had bills that needed paying so try not to about them having to hustle to fill your spot on their payroll.
Hope you get the job.

Years ago I read/heard that the average person has 7 different careers/jobs as an adult. There is usually a reason for that. Do what benefits you.

Thanks everyone, I really needed to hear these responses!
It's hard to reconcile feeling loyal to the job because of my awesome coworkers when management has shown me time and time again that I will always be stepped on whenever something goes down. They're really good at saying they appreciate me and the work I do but they are NOT good at actually showing it. Bottom line, this is just an opportunity I can't pass up.

That's wonderful! I too got a call back today for a second interview so fingers crossed for both of us.
I will say this, I was laid off in September from my job of almost 20 years. The way I was treated after the layoff was announced (they asked me to stay to wrap up projects) told me it didn't matter how long I had been there, I was totally disposable. The position I have the second interview for is more money and what I pushed for years to be able to do at my previous company, yet was patted on the head and told you don't have the skills. Well my skills and I spent the day working on the "test project" the potential employer asked me for and I'm pretty proud of it if I do say so myself.
So there's my long winded answer for you. Sometimes you just have to go for it and see what happens.
