We're getting a bunch of things done to our house. Today the exterior painter is supposed to start (well he said 8 am, it's 9:15 and he's not here but I know that's the norm...) He said it will take about 4-5 days. He told my husband he will work on Sunday. But Sunday we we be out all day for a memorial and we also have family staying Saturday and Sunday nights. My husband wants to leave a door open/unlocked so the painter(s) can have access to our bathroom. Oh, and also, our security system is currently disabled due to the work being done on the house. I don't want this guy to work on Sunday. Period. My husband said if we say he can't paint on Sunday that the painter will say he won't do the job. I call BS on that. Plus we have already paid him 20%. I don't want someone I don't know to have free access to our house when we aren't home. Our "discussion" didn't go well... I 100% do not want this guy to have access to our house plus our relative's stuff while we are gone. Do you agree with me? Thanks!
Updated-no problem, the painter understood, if he paints this Sunday, he will need to find a place to go. We're about 20 minutes from anything. And it wasn't a Sunday issue-it was just that it happened to be when we were planning not to be at home. We've had a lot of rain here so he was delayed. Thank you!

No! I would never allow any workers to have open access to our house.

We had outside work done several years ago and weren't home during the day. We kind of knew the gentleman who was doing the work and really had no worries about him using the bathroom if needed. We offered it to him, but he said no - they were used to this kind of thing and didn't need access. Maybe this guy would be the same.

If the contractor was reputable yes I would. But that’s just me.
However why did you already give him 20%? Here, CA law says contractors only get 10% before work starts.

Nope.. no access to my home if we were not there. Period.
I have had my house painted at least four times since I have lived here (it gets painted every five years).
Never once have we let anyone in and no one has ever asked either.
I believe the painters (it's with a company) might bring their own port-a-pot with them.
Edited to add.. Sunday thing isn't a problem with me.

My husband wants to leave a door open/unlocked so the painter(s) can have access to our bathroom. No way. I would be apprehensive about them coming in to use the bathroom when I was there! They should not have any issue finding a way to use a restroom a couple times a day. They can go get a pop/snack at a convenience store and use that. I would have no issue with them working on Sunday though. A lot of people I know that paint or do carpentry, have more than one job. So weekends are when they get a lot of their side hustle done. Or some are just that busy. Working on Sunday is a very normal thing for me.

If the painter is doing exterior work there’s no reason why he should need any access to the inside of the home so it shouldn’t matter if they’re there or not. The only time we’ve had a contractor ask to use our bathroom was when the guy was installing cabinets in my basement and was working inside all day for close to a week.

Absolutely not. I had painters here for a week doing outside construction and painting and they never entered the house once.

My conversation might escalate to “I need you to hear me…..”.: We are still in times of Covid and are selective in who we allow in the house. I am sure the insurance company would not like us leaving our home unlocked. What if they flushed the toilet and it kept running? We had our deck replaced last year. They left up to an hour each day to go have lunch etc elsewhere.

I’m pretty laid back and I wouldn’t allow that. If we’re at home, I’m happy to let contractors use the restroom. But I’m not just leaving the house open.
Workers who work outside are often without access to a toilet. They will either pee in the bushes (gross, but not the end of the world for a one day thing) or take a break and go use the bathroom at the nearest fast food place.

I would not allow access while I was gone all day.
I would have no problem providing a bathroom while I was there. Our powder room on the main floor is right beside the entrance from the garage, so it isn't like they would be roaming all over our house scoping it out LOL.
However, we have had several outside contractors (roofers, siding repairs, concrete work around the pool, installing a new septic field), and I cannot recall any of them asking to use the restroom. Of course, they could have asked DH when he was here, but I think most of the time they just plan to do their business when they leave for lunch (which usually means driving to Sheetz about 2 miles away since we have little to no fast food near us).

Absolutely not! Has your DH lost his mind? You have no idea who is on his crew and what their intentions are. I also wouldn't agree to them painting on a Sunday, but that's just me. Experienced crews deal with this situation all the time and know how to plan for that.

Access to the house - NO
I don't see an issue with him painting on a Sunday- it's outside work. Plus you will be gone all day.

He doesnt need access to the inside of your home to do exterior work. He will be used to having to leave to use the bathroom. No reason he cant paint outside on a Sunday

We've had all-day roofing and landscaping crews at our house over the years. None of them have ever asked to use our bathroom. There's no need to even offer it to them whether you're home or not.

I would have no problem with him working on Sunday but would definitely not leave the house open and unlocked when we aren't there. If I am there, they are welcome to use the restroom although I have seldom been asked and never by anyone doing exterior work.

I wouldn't. I've had my house painted before and they never asked to have access to the bathroom. That's on them to figure out how to take breaks and use the facilities elsewhere. I also wouldn't have a hard time with them painting when I wasn't there.

I would let them know you'd be gone and naturally locking the house. Then the painters could make their own decisions. But it's usually not too hard for them to justify taking a quick break and running to the corner store for a drink and a bathroom break.

I would never. My coworker used a trusted contractor (her next door neighbor) to have work done. She gave them access to the house and her jewelry was stolen by an employee of the trusted contractor. The guy was horrified and fired the worker/payed for the missing jewelry, but they were her dead mother's.
Even when we were home and they had access to our bathrooms, I don't know that I've ever had a contractor use my bathroom. They usually leave for lunch.

No.
We recently had our exterior painted/woodwork repaired/trim replaced.
The contractor never once came in the house for anything. He left for lunch and I assume took care of bathroom then.

I wouldn't leave my home unlocked. What happens during the time before he comes and after he leaves. Your home is exposed to who knows what. What are the chances something would happen; very slim, but I just would not leave my home unlocked for anything.

I would not leave my home unlocked! I have always insisted on being home when any work was done. Rarely has anyone asked to use the facilities.
This may open up another whole can of worms, but I actually fed the roofers lunch both days they were here replacing my roof. It was picnic style and we all ate on lawn chairs outside. It was a big project and they were finishing at 9 p.m. after borrowing flashlights.
I also fed the contractor who replaced my front door. That ended up being a bigger project than anticipated. He couldn’t help but notice the aroma from the kitchen! He’s returned for several other small projects. I still insist on being home and “helping.” Aka light cleanup or holding a tool or board. (He works alone).

The OP has no issue with painters working on Sunday. The issue is they will be out all day and the door would be left open with no one in the house and plenty of time to slip something in their pockets.

I've had people work in my home when I wasn't here. When I had a business where I did installations in the home, I sometimes worked in houses when the owners were away. I also did sales work for a company that did product installations in customer's homes. Again there were often times when the installers worked in the home without the homeowner present. In my family business, installers often worked in homes when the homeowners were at work. People can't take off to stay home all day or for several days while flooring is being replaced.
Glad you worked out something you are comfortable with. I'm just saying that it isn't unusual at all for some people to let others work in their homes when they aren't there.

There's probably a low percentage of people who are home all day while they're doing work so I'm sure they're used to figuring out their bathroom needs. He said you're 20 minutes from anything they'll just pee in your bushes or yard.

I don't want this guy to work on Sunday. Period. I don't blame you for that and I would not allow a stranger into my home when I am not there. I say let him work on Sunday, if he wishes, but he will need to leave to go to the gas station or a fast food place to use the restroom if needed. There is nothing that requires you to let a contractor into your home when you are not there. The only other alternative, is if you have a friend that can house sit for you Sunday while the contractor is there.

I wouldn't leave my home unlocked, but I would let them in to use the bathroom if I were home. I don't understand why you wouldn't. I also don't understand why you don't want them working outside if you are not home. Our house painters and roofer and gutter people all had to work when there was nobody home because that's when they work. During the week, during regular daylight hours. When my husband are both at work.

I would definitely let contractors inside to use the bathroom and get a drink, even use the microwave, if I was home. There is no way I would allow them inside the house if I was not at home all day. I reckon DSO would be fine with it though, like your husband. They will survive one day not being allowed inside. They will 100% pee in your backyard though. Hopefully they don't need to poop!
