Is there any such thing as classy melamine? I want to replace my dishes with unbreakable ones. My new kitchen floor is a hard tile and I’ve dropped one dish and it exploded like a bomb. I’m newly on blood thinners and a little tiny cut on my finger left blood spatter all over the kitchen.
But every melamine pattern I’ve found looks like shit…at least to me. I’ve always had lovely china and this feels like a loss for me.
Any suggestions?

I use Corelle, solid white. I have many many different pieces of this. I combine it with Sunflower Fiesta. My kitchen has mostly open shelves and the white Corelle looks nice. I have the round pieces, not the square.

I use Corelle. They have tons of patterns and they have plain white. If you have an outlet mall nearby, the Corelle store is an excellent source.

My suggestion would be rugs where your dishes are stored.
Unfortunately when Corelle breaks, it shatters!! It makes a horrendous mess.

I was going to suggest Corelle also. I’ve never used it but bought it for my son years ago for his 1st apartment while in college. Not china but really not bad. QVC has sold some melamine in the past but not sure if they still do but might be worth a look.

Another vote for Corelle. They are also lightweight so if you have arthritic hands it’s easier to manage than stoneware, etc

I have some melamine that I really like, I bought it for picnics (having family and friend meals in parks and on driveways during COVID and wanting to make them festive) and camping because it works well for that. But as posted above, it can’t go in the microwave, and I think it will eventually crack if going through the d/w too often. I haven’t had issues with scratching yet, but we rarely use knives when we get together like this. They are nice, but festive. I think French Bulldog is the brand, I’ll verify when we get home. Nope, it was just French Bull.

Another household using Corelle. We have solid white, but there are some with patterns.

If you’re used to lovely china, I don’t think you’re going to be happy with Corelle. I agree with the recommendations for rugs to soften any possible fall.

Nicer kitchen stores like Williams Sonoma, Sur la Table, and Pottery Barn usually have better quality melamine, often in really pretty patterns. It’s often their outdoor dinnerware so as we come up on the spring and summer season you may find some good options. I did a quick search and Pottery Barn has quite a few right now.

I'm another Corelle user. I drop it all the time and I've never had one break.

This is Reason #1 that I don't like the tile floor in my kitchen! If I ever renovate, the floor will be linoleum or fake wood or SOMETHING that won't cause an explosion of glass when something is dropped.
My mom has a set of melamine that we use for big family gatherings. We love that it is lightweight for buffet service. It wouldn't work for us for every day, though, because we use the microwave so much.

I have a couple of sets of dishes. My “good dishes” is a set of Bavarian china that my parents started giving to my siblings and I for Christmas presents starting when we were in our early teens. Over the years, they built each of us a complete place setting for 12 plus all the serving pieces. They are not only beautiful, but incredibly sentimental since Mom chose the pattern and built the set over so many years. For me, these are only used on special occasions.
I have a small set of Christmas dishes. This set was also started by Mom when I first got married. She offered to continue expanding it, but since it was just my ex and I, then just my son and I and maybe a few guests for dinner, I had all that I needed. When we all got married and started our own families, Mom asked that we please get together for a family Christmas every year. She didn’t care which day we had it, as long as we continued to get together as a full family. And we did. It was usually at my parent’s house so we used their huge set of dishes. My older sister also hosted after they bought their giant house on the beach. She had a huge set of Christmas dishes too.
I have had a few other sets that I either sold or gave away since they were not my taste any longer or, in the case of one set, my ex fiancé’s son really liked them so when he and his girlfriend got their first apartment, I gave them to him.
I have a nice quality set of thicker square off-white dishes. They have a rustic look and I tend to use these for any company. When I started looking for a new set, my son insisted they be white or beige because he was in school to be a chef and said food only looks appetizing when served on white dishes. I have several interesting serving dishes and platters that I use with this set. I also have some colored accent pieces that I will mix in with the white.
When I first moved to Oregon, I was using paper goods, but the guilt of all that waste got to me and I bought a small cheap 4-place setting set at the local Walmart. I used these until my dishes arrived and will probably sell them at the next yard sale. Although I have been using the coffee cups from this set every day.
When my boy was little, I started with a few plain white Corelle bowls and two plates because they are unbreakable and light weight. He used so many bowls each day so I have multiple bowls in three different sizes and a couple of larger serving sizes. I also have about 6 white Corelle plates. I use the smallest little bowls for dipping sauces and as prep bowls when cooking. When Mom lived with me, she asked me to use the Corelle with her because they were not too heavy. She liked the look of my rustic white square set, but said they were too heavy for her to carry.
As for what I grab 99% of the time on a daily basis for my own meals? The Corelle. They are light, don’t chip, fit nicely in the dishwasher, and are conveniently located in the kitchen cupboards while the better sets are in the dining room. I live alone. I guess if I had a spouse, I would be using the nicer stuff.
If I had it to do over again, I would probably have a healthy collection of Fiestaware in many colors. I love the look of it. Although, I agree with my son, food looks much more appealing on white or beige dishes. And as I get older, things are less and less important to me and I have committed to downsizing instead of adding to my stuff. I have offered the Christmas dishes to my son and will probably give them the beautiful Bavarian dishes too, if his fiancé loves them, that is. I don’t want her to take them and resent them, wishing she had her own set instead. And the Bavarian has a full pattern so my son might not want to use them since he focuses on what is on the plates.
I don’t know why, but dish sets have always been something that I could have multiple sets of and be quite happy. Dishes and throw blankets. I didn’t realize I had so many blankets until this move. I should donate some to an animal shelter, I guess.

We are going to re0do the kitchen but the floring is tile throughout the house so it would be an enormous project that we just don’t feel like doing. I would put a rug down but the kitchen is such a weird shape that nothing looks right.

If your floors are hard DO NOT use Corelle. It is durable for mild drops, but on hard surfacez it does something unbelievable. Shatters, splinters…..I have never seem anything explode quite like it does. No problem when it hits the linoleum floor, but my tile countertop decimates it.

Add me to the Corelle bench. I also have tile floors and I've dropped Corelle on it a time or two. The Corelle will either explode into 2 billion shards, or it will bounce. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. haha
We use ours in the microwave all the time so i could never have melamine.

It's no problem not being able to put them in the microwave for me, as I seldom use it. However, the top rack only of the dishwasher is a big problem. I really don't like hand washing dishes, and detest drying them.

A couple of years ago I picked up some melamine dishes and bowls at the Pottery Barn outlet for when we eat outside. I think they’re very nice looking and good quality being much thicker than the typical ones I’ve seen. So it is possible to find decent sets if you think this is the solution to your problem.
