I made mention in the title that spoilers would be permitted, so anyone who has not seen the movie can avoid this thread.
We (DH and I) saw the movie this afternoon.
I found it hard to follow. I presume that was because the story of his conflicting emotions were hard to present for a viewing audience.
I wondered how the sex scenes advanced the story. I did not think they did. I felt like the sex scenes were tossed into the movie in hopes of enticing the audience with an R rating.
All in all, I wonder if this will end up like The English Patient--a movie that the acting world loves and the general public responds with "huh?".

My dad had a hard time following it bc so many of the scientists looked alike/names were thrown out. Supposedly there is a 10 min sex scene that didn’t make it in but the rumor was out there to entice people to come. However while I guess it was to show he was human, btwn his affair and his wife’s lack of mothering I just didn’t feel like they were super likeable People. 🤷♀️ I had no idea he was earning higher ups of moral issues with using the bomb so that interested me the most.

I saw the movie w/ my husband as soon as it came out. We both enjoyed it. I love historical dramas, so it wasn't surprising that I enjoyed it. My husband is not as big of a fan of historical dramas, but he enjoyed this one.
I don't remember thinking that the sex scenes were particularly graphic or gratuitous. My husband didn't mention it and he can be a bit of a prude at times.
My best friend had a discussion about why Truman was so outraged when Oppenheimer expressed concerns about the decision to employ the bomb in WWII. I always think that is a sign of a good movie when you are discussing why a character said this or did that after you've seen the movie.
I always read books aloud when my husband and I go on long road trips. We just happened to have started reading David McCoullough's biography of Harry Truman shortly before we saw Oppenheimer. We got to the part where Oppenheimer met w/ Truman at the White House a few weeks after we saw the movie. The meeting in the book played out exactly as it went in the movie.

I am a documentary lover so expected to love this movie. I ended up feeling like it was about two hours longer than it needed to be, and I think the sex scenes contributed to that (rather than the story). I was very annoyed by the jumping around and trying to keep track of the story. DH (not a typical documentary lover, but has kind of a mechanic-type brain, if that makes sense - he likes to understand how things work) was pretty enthusiastic about the movie - it held his interest throughout and didn't feel long to him. DD16 went with us to see the movie, and it was LIFE CHANGING for her. Went to school the next week and started lobbying her teachers to let her double up on math classes so she could get to physics sooner. She rounded up a bunch of friends to go see it with her a second time.
Here's my hot take: the movie is a look into life with ADHD. Both DD and DH have it (DD diagnosed/medicated at 4.5yo it was so pronounced), so they felt very "at home" and loved it. I am very linear-brained and was so annoyed by the format of it that I couldn't concentrate on the story.

How interesting that you think ADHD or linear thinking influenced the response to the movie. I am linear in my thought process.
This morning I thought more about the movie and concluded that I expect the best movie of the year to be so good that I am encouraging everyone with, "You must see this movie." I do not have that feeling for Oppenheimer.

I enjoyed Oppenheimer, but didn't love it. The story is super compelling, and I think the movie needed to be long to tell it (unlike Killers of the Flower Moon, which needed serious editing and was far longer than necessary). The non-linear storytelling didn't bother me at all. I think the sex scenes were intended to illustrate how his personal morals and more global morals weren't necessarily aligned, which made for interesting internal conflict. However, I think it would have been a better use of that time to actually flesh out the women in the movie as their own characters instead of having them be so one-dimensional.

I had a hard time telling all of the same-aged white scientists apart, but I thought the movie was well done and thought provoking.

I'm excited for it to come out on streaming because I fell asleep at the theater (comfy seats + wine) so I think I missed a lot of it.

I found the last half to be much better than the 1st half, but still....
I think it was SO hyped that it could not live up to it.
I thought that Robert Downey Jr played an excellent part.

I generally liked it, but I thought it was a bit artsy-fartsy with all the jumping around in time. It was long but needed it to be. Killers of the Flower Moon felt like I'd been held hostage for 3.5 hours, then just when I thought I'd get to go home there was a phony radio play. WTH?

I loved it and saw it twice in the theatre (with two different friends) within a week or ten days of its release. I would see it again, and probably will. And it’s not really my genre. I’m glad to see if getting so much recognition, and it sure tells an important story.

Too long, bloated. I didn't hate it, but I sure didn't love it.

The sex scenes: I comprehend showing the actual intercourse scene--that made the audience know he was really not keeping his martial vows. (No one could say, was he really unfaithful or were the just hinting at it?)
But how did the scene with the 2 of them sitting nude--she in a chair and he on the bed--advance the story? I felt that was just gratuitous.

I thought the sex scenes moved forward the story of oppenheimer being affected by the berkeley liberal, communists/socialists of the time.. he tried to stay on the edge of those groups. and gave a bit of the flavor of that college at the time.
I am biased.. we know people who are related to some in the film and know all the others. (our friend was born at los alamos-his dad was a project director there). so we both really liked the movie. oppenheimer was such a complex person.. that there was going to be a hard time telling the story.

I can't say we enjoyed it because of what it was about. I think I posted before how awful it was to see people celebrating the "success" of the bombing. I understand it, but it was hard to watch. Again, I think it was well done, informative, interesting and educational, but I don't know that we loved it or enjoyed it.
