Does your closest international airport have a lot of international flights?
My closest international airport in San Diego, and it is not really that big for the 8th largest city in the US. I remember when the only international flight, other than to Mexico, was one daily British Airways flight. It used to be a 747, that couldn’t take off fully loaded with fuel (runway not long enough) so it had to make a stopover in Phoenix to load up with fuel.
But we’ve grown since then. Besides BA to London, we now have Lufthansa to Munich, Air Canada to several Canadian cities, and Japan Airlines to Tokyo. Along with several flights to cities in Mexico. Not really a whole lot, but it is something.

nearest airport (abt an hour) - is regional and doesn't have international flights
next nearest (nearly 2 hrs) - is international but doesn't actually offer any direct international flights - they all require a connection at a US hub airport first
Three ish hours takes me to a major airport - with 56 direct international destinations - that's where I'll leave from when I go to England in October and where my daughter left from for her high school trip to Europe in 2017

Portland has some, but not a ton. There are also direct flights to London but that's new within the last year.
Connecting through SEA, SFO or LAX is pretty common, depending on destination. But PDX is a fantastic airport, so I'll take it.

Does your closest international airport have a lot of international flights? . Yes my nearest is Heathrow - the biggest and busiest in the country.

Yes our city’s airport is international and the hub for WestJet so we can fly direct to many destinations. It’s just under a half hour drive from our condo.

SFO is pretty good but not the best. LAX is a lot better. My brother picked a place to move to - and proximity to large international airport was one of the most important criteria - he picked Vegas!

Yes, my nearest airport is Munich which is the second biggest in Germany. There are flights to many international destinations - and in context, that means flights outside the EU, so flights to France or Spain are not considered international from here - including multiple US airports, some South American, multiple African and Asian countries.

Yes, which means I can thankfully avoid any New York/New Jersey airport. ugh. Mine is Dulles International and you can fly anywhere from there. That's about 30 miles from here so it's pretty easy to get there. There is another airport very close to me, Reagan National, but those flights all require connecting somewhere. Often JFK and I really hate that airport.

In the middle of two, both about 20 miles away. IAH has lots of international flights. I think DFW has more options and better prices typically, but that's a 4 hr drive away and not worth it. HOU is smaller and has some international flights, mostly on Southwest I think. Those are to Mexico, Central America and a few islands in the Caribbean. Merge might know more about options out of HOU. Yes, my nearest airport is Munich which is the second biggest in Germany. Seriously one of my favorite airports in Europe! Any time I can route through there instead of Frankfurt I will.

I live in Calgary and our airport is an international one (YYC) ... it has flights to most major destinations ... we are pretty lucky!

Our closest international airport is Dallas. However, whenever we fly internationally, we always start in Oklahoma City and connect with another airport where our international flight originates. Depending on where we are going and what airline we are flying, our connection could be New York, Houston, Chicago, Boston, etc.

Yep - DFW is only 10 minutes away and has a lot of international flights. One of the big plusses for moving here but during Covid, my passport expired and with all of my health issues, I haven't gone anywhere. A good GF moved to Scotland a few years ago so I may go visit her later this year.

Pearson International (Toronto) is the largest in Canada. Many people from Michigan and Western NY will drive a few hours to get a direct international flight rather than doing some puddle jumping. 1 1/2 hours drive away.

The Minneapolis/St Paul airport has a lot of international destinations. Sometimes they only fly on certain days of the week, but it’s pretty convenient. If I have to make a connection, I try to do it within the US because it’s just easier in my home country.

It does, but I was spoiled living in NYC by just how many direct flights we had.

I feel like IAH had more international nonstops pre-Covid, though. I strongly dislike having connecting flights. Living in a place where the airport only connected to larger ones to get anywhere would be a bummer.

Recently checked for a trip to Grand Cayman and there were no direct flights! We won't fly Southwest so don't really use HOU any longer. United has been our go-to in the past but we are shifting away from them whenever possible. United has declined so much in service (DH has had a few really bad experiences in the past few years). Now that DH rarely travels for business and we aren't expat we no longer have status and have discovered there are advantages to being free agents.

Yes, as I mentioned in the original thread, it's a deal breaker for me. "international" means pretty much nothing - my son's university is near an international airport even though it's only international destinations are Canadian less than an hour away on a puddle jumper. I would never live near an airport where I am guaranteed to fly through somewhere else to even get somewhere domestically. He's forced to choose between ORD and IAD to go anywhere. It makes for long days and it's ridiculous how much more expensive those small/midsized airports are - I pay easily 2x for his flights than his sister's even though they're similar distance from home.

I also use Toronto Pearson International Airport which is the busiest in Canada. It flies everywhere. I'm an hour away. The only time I didn't fly non-stop was the flight to Hawaii on United (it was also the first time flying with them.) All our flights to Europe have been non-stop. Florida as well.

Flying with DH on United with his 1K status is pretty nice, though. They really roll out the red carpet for us. If we didn’t have that I’m sure we wouldn’t be so loyal.

We live 2-2 1/2 hours from 4 major international airports.
O'Hare and Midway have the most flights, of course, but I refuse to drive in Chicago and they no longer have a bus that travels from here to there so our trip to Spain this summer will be out of Indy.

I guess because we are so close to LAX, we don’t get a lot of direct international flights in San Diego. I know a lot of people that will make the 2+ hour drive up to LAX to catch flights. But that airport is such a mess, I try to avoid having to drive there.

LAX. Flights to anywhere. So close by. You can't imagine how good it feels to come home from a longinternational flight and Uber home in less than 15 minutes and yet be nowhere near the plane noise.
