Because our kids go to school on the other side of the country and our best friends moved to Florida, we fly pretty frequently. Not as often as regular business travelers but on average at least once a month. SW is always sending me the credit card offers with lots of points and I've never considered it but this time they sent me an offer for a free companion pass for a year. I'm really tempted but I want to be sure this perk is really all it's cracked up to be. If you've used this, can you weigh in with your experience? Are there limitations? If the flight sells out, will my companion get bumped?

I have a companion pass and it works great. We’ve had no problems with my husband getting bumped because he was flying on a companion pass.

My sister has a companion pass with her boyfriend, it was free.. for at least a year if not more, since he travels so much. No problems getting bumped. She just has to be with him when flying. It's great for her (although since she has been sick she hasn't been able to fly) but when he went to fun places she could fly for free, hotel free and she got to either do local stuff (by herself) or just lay at the pool and relax.

We have one. You don’t get bumped, it is no different than a regular ticket. One small perk is that if the paid ticket is a higher fare category or pays for the early bird check in, the companion automatically gets checked in at the same time for no extra fee. The only limitation is that you have to be with the passenger who earned the companion (if that makes sense), you only fly free if you are together. Probably not something to consider in your case, but you can change your companion a couple of times per year as well (I want to say 3 or 4). We have used that to our benefit when my husband travels with different children. We have also booked travel in advance of renewal of our pass and had no trouble getting the companion’s fare refunded from their purchased ticket to make them a companion (this is safer than waiting in case the flight sells out). A sold out flight is the only time we haven’t been able to use it.

No current information. But this reminded me of a similar program they had in the 90s. When flying fro college home for my wedding portrait I used my other pass for my wedding dress for a full flight. You should have seen the looms I got from the men. One even sarcastically commented something to the effect of “yeah, that’ll last.” No, my dress did not bumped.
