We had two pure-bred dogs and we called them "the mutts." They're dogs, not people. Getting your panties in a wad because someone refers to your dog as a mutt rather than mixed-breed is pretentious. Find something else to get worked up over.

It doesn’t bother me. In fact, one of my DD’s all time favorite childhood picture books is titled Mutt Dog and it’s a sweet story about how a scruffy stray street dog finds a forever home with a loving family. I think I’ve only had one true mixed breed dog in my life even though just over half of ours came from shelters or rescues. Around here a lot of purebred labs seem to get surrendered. 😞

All but one of my dogs has been rescued so they are all definitely mutts. I think I would be mildly annoyed by the vet office calling them mutts. I have never really referred to a dog as a mutt. Most likely, I ask what breeds they are and people usually spout off two or three mixes. That's what I did with mine to the best of my knowledge but of course, that makes them mutts. Just don't really like the term as it seems derogatory.

Both our dog and our foster dog are mutts. No offense taken.

Wait til they find out that all those "designer" breeds are mutts that they are paying hundreds to thousands of dollars for!

Doesn’t bother me. My dog is a mutt and I wouldn’t be offended if someone called him that. I know what breeds he has in his genetic makeup, but, he is a mutt. 😆 This

My dog is a mutt. I think they're the best kind of dog. I'll use that term to describe her when someone asks me her breed.

The term "mutt" doesn't bother me at all. Our smaller pup, Bailey, is a mutt (and adorable!). I adopted her from a local animal shelter in 2014 when she was a year old. She is now 10.5 years old and doing really well! She is a lazy house dog who prefers to nap on my kids' beds and hide from our Great Dane, Finny.
When I adopted Bailey, I was told she was a Pointer/Spaniel mix, but I think she has another dozen breeds mixed in, too!

I do love a good typo! Since my oldest resembles a loaf, I found this quite funny. Somewhat burnt toast loaf. View Attachment 950nancy , I love your dog's markings! I was at the vet yesterday and a breeder had a rolling crate of a litter of 8-week-old corgi puppies who were being very vocal. Orla was peering at them trying to figure out what was going on. He is very handsome! Corgi puppies are just so cute. They do turn into a very specific dog though!

Wouldn't bother me. It never ceases to amaze me what people get upset over. Me too. I kind of chalk this up to people slowly changing over to another word for something that some people find offensive or maybe just more old fashioned. I grew up with the word mutt, so it doesn't seem wrong, but I can also see that people do get offended. We also called them Heinz 57's, but maybe that is wrong too.

I remember when I first took our mutt, Jo, to the vet.
The vet said "I think she's got a little German Shepard, a little Golden Retriever, a little lab and maybe even a little bit of collie in her. She's going to be a great dog. I find these mutts usually have all the best traits of these breeds and very few of the health problems."
He was right about Jo. She was smart, kind, loyal and protective. She lived to be almost nineteen years old. She was proud to be called a mutt!

My Charlie is a mixed bird through no fault of his own! He doesn’t answer to mutt, dog or puppy. He answer to his name, baby and mamma’s boy! So he and I don’t care what you say. The vets office has him down as a mixed breed. They say mixed when talking about him to me. I don’t think they ever use the word mutt.

We said the dog was Heinz 57, rather than use the term "mutt."
I have also heard "The father was a man about town."
Somehow the term mutt seems cold and unloving.

Mutt can be used in a derogatory way, so it would depend how they said it. Personally, I don’t think it is insulting because I’m not snooty about pure bread animals. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t mean it in an insulting manner. Don’t even get me started on using it to describe people. I do love a good typo! Since my oldest resembles a loaf, I found this quite funny. Somewhat burnt toast loaf. View AttachmentHe's gorgeous!!

I have pure breed dogs now but I used to have a mutt and that how he was labeled at the vet ,I had no problem with it . I think that the people who have a problem with it are the doodle owners, they are paying thousands of dollars for their dogs and have the vets label them as mutt is hard to swallow for some of them

I would not be in the slightest bit offended if someone called my mixed breed dog a "mutt". I remember when I went to puppy training classes at my vet's clinic. We all had to introduce our dogs to the group. All the other dogs were pure bred this-or-that. The owners were all like "This is Lucy, she is a pure bred cocker spaniel." "This is Bailey, he is a pure bred Labrador." "This is Molly, she is a pure bred poodle." Ugh, so obnoxious. Why couldn't they just say "This is Lucy, she is a cocker spaniel." THEY are the kind of people who would be offended if you called their precious pooches a "mutt"!

Both of my adulthood dogs were mutts. They were smart, loveable, teachable and I miss them. They were still mutts though. LOL

I have a goldendoodle. An expensive mutt. Several years ago way before I got her, I was at the vet with my border collie and the vet started a rant about doodles and the fact that they’re over priced mutts. I didn’t know anything about them at the time. Her main gripe about them was the price breeders were getting for them.
Fast forward, my border collie died at the age of 14, she had been a wonderful dog and I missed her terribly.
We were no longer living on our farm and had moved into town, not a great place to raise a border collie puppy, they need a lot of room to run. A friend had gotten a doodle and I fell in love. After a period of time I got a goldendoodle puppy and she is the love of my life Call her anything you want, I still love her to death. My love is not wrapped up in her heritage, yes, I did pay more for than than a full blooded border collie, but she is worth every penny, with the love she brings into our home.

My dog is a pug and pugs are pretty distinctive looking, so yeah, when someone refers to my dog as a “mutt” it’s in an irritated tone of voice and is meant as an insult (like “get your mutt away from me”. I wouldn’t care in the least otherwise.

I also have a Goldendoodle and call her that when asked what type of dog she is (a lot of people think she is a labradoodle because she is black, not realizing that Goldendoodles can be several different colors). Everyone that I have met at the dog park says what their dog is mixed with (or if they are pure bred they just say "He is a lab") unless they don't know. Then they just say "He was a rescue." Luckily I haven't heard any negative things about doodles from people IRL, but based on this thread and many comments on a puppy/dog owners FB page, the people that tend to get their panties in a wad the most are the ones that like to hate on doodles. It's odd and petty, IMO. I'm not sure which breeds are "designer dogs" but wouldn't use that term, either.

The dog in the book “The One and Only Ivan” referred to himself as a dog of uncertain heritage. I can see where people who have these expensive mixed breed dogs might not like their dog to be called a mutt, but they are fancy mutts.

Some people have the ability to make any innocent word sound like an insult, and some people can take offence at anything.
I don't think mutt is offensive, nor mongrel, nor hybrid. I like those simple, honest terms better than designer breed which to me just sounds ostentatious.

It wouldn't bother me at all. A mixed-breed dog is a mutt, doesn't matter if you found it as a stray or bought an expensive "designer" breed.
If you ask my dad what kind of dog he has, he'll say "brown". My sister always referred to her dogs' breed as "black".
I saw a cartoon once with a dog saying: "I'm a pure-bred dog. My mom was a dog and my dad was a dog." I love that.
Oh, and my cat is a moggy. So many people want to give cats fancy names based on the color- like mentioned before, any gray cat as a Russian Blue. Most of the time they are just mutt cats.

I have TNRd 4 all gray Russianblue looking cats here and they are all named Komrade due to this 😂 They are identical so have the same name, like 24 Voids (all black).
The neighbors bred Siamese kittens. They keep the female inside, I’ve seen her once or twice when the kids carried her out in the porch but that’s it. The male however runs the streets with his big balls so…no. Didn’t ear tip and had the vet shave as little as possible but if they are having kittens, well, they aren’t Siamese anymore 😉
