There's a conversation going on in one of the local message groups on FB (man I need to leave them lol)
But somebody was going on about calling her vet and saying "she's x & y but looks more x" and the receptionist said "so a mutt?"
And she's all offended.
Quite a few people said it isn't derogatory and that's what mutt means - mixed breed. But that mixed breed sounds nicer.
But man some people were all butt hurt over it lol.

Doesn’t bother me. My dog is a mutt and I wouldn’t be offended if someone called him that. I know what breeds he has in his genetic makeup, but, he is a mutt. 😆

It wouldn’t have bothered me if someone had referred to Turriff as a mutt, but it certainly would have annoyed him - he didn’t even know he was a dog! 😂

My dog is a kutt. I think she is basset and German short-haired pointer, but who knows.

Heck, I had and Uncle Mutt. lol Not sure how he got his name, but his legal first name was Hencle and he hated that. He was Mexican / Indian, so maybe that is why. But the use of the word mutt in regards to a person, it is derogatory as in being stupid.

I've had two mutts. Doesn't bother me in the least. It bothers me more that people think designer dogs are legitimate breeds. And that's not to say they aren't great dogs, they're just not purebred.

My friends tease me I have a designer dog. He is 2 breeds, bred 3x to get a 3rd generation wheaten doodle. You can call my dog a mutt. He is my baby.

This has everything to do about the person saying these words. And nothing, whatsoever, to do with the dog. Or, the dog’s owner.

It would depend on their tone and my mood but usually it wouldn't bother me. We call our dog a dumpster pup.

All mine have been mutts. They know it and we know it. And we love them. Other than really wanting a golden retriever or a husky, I'm good with pound and found puppers.

Mutt can be used in a derogatory way, so it would depend how they said it. Personally, I don’t think it is insulting because I’m not snooty about pure bread animals. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t mean it in an insulting manner. Don’t even get me started on using it to describe people.

Love is love no matter what you call them and dogs are ALL love.
Mine are both purebred but often get called mutt by my kids. No biggie.

I don't really care for the term and wouldn't use it, but it also depends on the tone and intention of the person using it.

Not at all. I have a Labradoodle, and I call her a “mutt” myself. She’s my sweet little mutt, and I love her to pieces.

I vastly prefer it to the term “designer breed” or any of the mashup names of two breeds.

(See peaname lol)
Ummmm no?
I’ve heard of people with purebred dogs get all bent out of shape when someone thinks their “flat coated retriever” is part golden lol.
Or, of course the standard poodle folks who constantly have their dogs “insulted” when people ask what kind of doodle it is.
I had an English bulldog and I will admit, more than once, people would say…. Ohhhhhh I have an English bulldog too!! And it was by no means an English lol
Current bestie is as mutty as it gets. Her nicknames include Big Mutt, FuzzyMutt, BabyMutt and monkeymutt. We’ve happily made peace with her status as a one of a kind.
ETA: for a person or normal convo, that’s how I feel. At the vets office? They should do better. Different breeds have different health concerns. My dog resembles a golden/lab to most people. I did a dna test on her (2 of them lol) and she has neither. She is boxer, husky, shepherd and corgi. Each of these breeds (including the golden and the lab that she isn’t!) have common issues to their breeds. And quite frankly, I think my vet needs to care what my dog is, beyond “mutt.”
So yea, I do think it would bug me at the vets office.

Doesn’t bother me at all. My latest mutt is an unknown terrier mix, the one before her was an unknown Corgi mix.

Normally it wouldn’t bother me but in this situation it sounds dismissive and possibly insulting depending on the tone and attitude of the vet. People love their dogs and if they go to the trouble of stating what they are and what they look like you can tell it matters to them so it doesn’t surprise me they would be bothered having their baby called a mutt

Mine applies to cats rather than dogs, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I've had 2 purebred Russian Blue cats and my current car is a grey & white moggy/domestic short hair. I do get a bit annoyed when people try to claim every grey cat is a "Russian blue" because grey ("blue") is a natural coat color and it can be present in a lot of cat breeds and also in moggies.
After my first Russian Blue passed away I adopted a Russian white, which is a fairly rare color and Australia was pretty much the only country that has registered breeders. She was being rehomed by her previous owner who also had 2 Russian Blues and a Bengal, and she lived in the same state where the Russian white breeder was, so I did believe it, BUT while he title made me look at the cat's photo on the rescue site, the reason I adopted her was her story and because I couldn't believe someone would just give their 4yo cat that they bought as a kitten away because she had some health issues. When we went to my vet for the first time, I told him she was a Russian white, and he just looked at me and said ..."she's just a white cat"...lol, I laughed and said I didn't actually care what she was...she was mine now.
I'm definitely not offended by any of the terms used for mixed breeds, I do get a bit bent out of shape when people try to claim their mutt is a fancy designer dog breed - no they aren't, you went to a backyard breeder and paid a ridiculous sum of money for a mutt via an industry that nobody should be supporting.

Aren’t white cats rare in themselves? I thought pure white cats are unusual. Most have a spot at least of another color. Funny that a vet would say it was ‘just a white cat”. But I guess I get what he meant. I had never heard of Russian White. Interesting to hear about them. You bring up good point about mixed breeding. People with Goldendoodles or what have you tend to be precious about their pets breed. But they are really mutts aren’t they? Personally we have only ever had mutts because we adopt from shelters and you fall in love with who you fall in love with. For us that tends to be the muppet looking dogs which have always been some random combo you wouldn’t think possible.

People with Goldendoodles or what have you tend to be precious about their pets breed. My current dog is a goldendoodle. We didn't pay anything for her as she had to be rehomed by our daughter's friend. We have always had rescues and while we can guess at some breeds (our last was a pitbull but we have no idea if she was purebred) most of my pups have been mysteries/mutts. I have no pretention about any of the dogs I've had, but it's funny to me that since getting this dog *other* people do. So many people who have purebred/purchased dogs have a sort of pretention about them to the point where they are even pretentious about the way you refer to your own dog when they are a "designer breed." It's been weird for me because I've always been a "a dog is just a dog" sort of person.

Not at all.. I have quite a few 'mutts' in my life. Typically they have been our best dogs ever... especially one I had as a teen... looked like a Benji dog... her name was Pepper. My ass of a father made me get rid of her when they divorced. No other reason. Thankfully I had a good friend that could take her, and she had a couple of kids wanting a dog.

Does not bother me, I love my mutt and will be devastated when she crosses the rainbow bridge. She is a morkie (maltese yorkie) but I got her from a family that was letting their teenager learn responsibility and earn some extra money by breeding their pups. And our world revolves around her!

I was at the vet yesterday and a breeder had a rolling crate of a litter of 8-week-old corgi puppies who were being very vocal. Orla was peering at them trying to figure out what was going on.
