As part of decluttering and updating our wardrobes I'm thinking critically about what clothing we actually need, as opposed to feeling like we should have "just in case".
DH and I each have a dressing gown but I'm pretty sure DH hasn't worn his in at least a year, and while I've sometimes worn mine in the evenings in winter, if I didn't have one I'm not sure I'd really miss it.
About the only situation I can think of that I feel like we'd definitely need one is for a stay in hospital. And if that's the case, I'm thinking we could just buy one when it's needed.🤔
I'm tending towards letting DH know I think we should get rid of our dressing gowns but before I do, I thought it'd be smart to ask you all what you do. 🤓
So, do you actually use a dressing gown, bathrobe or housecoat?

I have 2 actually - one everyday type one and one which is super warm and thick. I sometimes use the lighter one in the mornings before/after showering but it’s interchangeable really with a sweatshirt or something like that. I can’t remember when I last used the warmer one to be honest.

What is the difference between a dressing gown and a bathrobe? I have a bathrobe, I don’t use it much. I have a long sweater I wear around the house when it is cold. Does that count as a housecoat?

I have a thin robe that I put on after getting out of the shower in the morning and wear while I'm putting on makeup. I also have a fluffy, warmer robe that I never use come to think of it and it's just taking up valuable room in my small closet and I should get rid of it. Thanks for the idea!

I only really know what a bathrobe is - and yes I wear it when I get out of shower, before getting dressed.

I sometimes use the lighter one in the mornings before/after showering but it’s interchangeable really with a sweatshirt or something like that. DH and I actually gave our older DS's partner a silk robe for Christmas last year thinking she'd probably wear it before/after showering and she was thrilled with it. Personally though, I find these days I tend to either take all my clothes in with me when I shower, or if it's really warm I might only take my smalls in and then finish dressing in the bedroom. What is the difference between a dressing gown and a bathrobe? I have a bathrobe, I don’t use it much. I have a long sweater I wear around the house when it is cold. Does that count as a housecoat? My understanding is, a bathrobe is typically made of an absorbent material (like toweling) and made to keep you warm and dry after a bath/shower/swim whereas a dressing gown or housecoat looks similar but without the absorbent material and is worn over sleepwear before bed or after getting up but before dressing or fully dressing (ie, worn over under garments before dressing in evening wear or maybe before putting on a wedding gown). I think whether your long sweater would count as a housecoat would depend on whether or not you could also wear it outdoors - if yes, then probably not. But that's just me, others might think differently. 😊

I don't wear it much right now, but I used to wear my robe a lot. I actually have 2 of the same one (wedding gift and DH doesn't use his). My son also uses one but my daughter doesn't. Mine is terry cloth and I'd like to get a light weight one for summer.

I have two lightweight robes. One at home and one in my gym bag. They both serve the purpose of covering me while I put on makeup and do my hair after showering. Sometimes I am prone to wander if I have extra time to get ready, drinking coffee and such, so I wear them a lot

I use my bathrobe every morning. I get up, put on my bathrobe and go to the kitchen to make coffee. I sit and surf the web while I drink my coffee and then eat breakfast. After that I take my shower and get dressed. In warmer months I just go down in my pjs although I have a light cotton one too.

DH has one that is used only for hospital stays.
I have 2 robes. One is heavy fabric, sort of plush and I wear it in cold weather. I put it on over pajamas, have breakfast, read news etc. before beginning the day. It zips up the front.
I have 2 lighter weight fabric ones that I use during warm months with schedule mentioned above.

Nope. I got rid of my robe a few years ago. If I’m hanging around in pj pants and a T-shirt I’ll put a big old sweatshirt on if I’m cold. I typically shower, wrap up in a towel and walk 8 steps to my bedroom where I dry off and get dressed.

I have WAY too many dressing gowns, both for winter and summer!
WINTER: I have on old mint one that is in the back of the wardrobe somewhere. Then one year DD bought me a pink and white one with hearts for Mother's Day. Then a few years later, she bought me another fluffy blue one for Mother's Day. Then a couple of years ago, my MIL bought me a yellow one with a hood.
SUMMER: I have a short sleeved pink one, a tropical print one I snaffled from DD's donate pile, and a pink and mint one my MIL gave me for Christmas two years ago.
I also have an Oodieâ„¢ that mum bought me. It's like a super thick pullover gown with a hood, and it's ridiculously warm. I wear it in winter instead of turning the heating on sometimes.

I think whether your long sweater would count as a housecoat would depend on whether or not you could also wear it outdoors - if yes, then probably not. But that's just me, others might think differently. 😊 It is a regular long sweater made for outdoor wear. I've never worn it outside, but I guess it is not technically a "housecoat". OK, so after reading some of the responses, I've never used my bathrobe for after showering. I wore it like I now wear my long sweater, just something to keep me warm in the winter, worn over my regular clothing or nightwear.

I have a pull on housecoat that I put on weekday mornings after the shower until Ive dried my hair. It's ugly and I dont love it, but I havent found what I like.
I havent owned or worn a traditional robe in years and dh and ds never have.
When I've been in the hospital, I've just asked for a second gown to wear like a robe to keep from flashing my ass at people

No. I haven't even owned one in years. Probably over a decade. I do have some long cardigan sweaters that I tend to wear all day during the cold months. So that's the closest thing I use.
Actually, seeing other responses, I remember doing the 2 gown things at the hospital when my youngest was born, which means I haven't owned a robe or dressing gown in over 12 years.

DH has never owned one, not even for hospital stays. I have a thick one that is too warm for a hospital stay and as I never wear it round the house I’ll probably ditch it now you’ve mentioned it! I possibly have a thin one lurking in a closet but I never wear that either.

None. I have bathrobes but I never wear them. I take a lightweight robe on trips in case someone comes to our door and I have to answer it. I stand in the bathroom with just my undies on to put on make-up/do my hair. Is that weird? It seems normal to me.

I have a thick furry dressing gown that I wear most days in the winter. I also have a white cotton waffle one for the summer that I love. DD gave me and DS Oodies™ a few months ago, and I have never known anything warmer or more comforting - it’s like wearing a fleecy weighted blanket! And yes, it’s ideal to wear rather than put on the heating. My only problem with it is that if I sit or lie down while wearing it, I tend to fall asleep!

I worked for many years in the lingerie dept of a large department store. Consequently, I have plenty of robes, gowns, etc. I do have a specific night gown hanging in one of my closets, that my daughter knows is my *hospital gown*. 😊

Off to Google "dressing gown" Dressing gowns can be made of different material but just to give you an idea, here's a silk one worn over a matching chemise (night gown) And here's a toweling bathrobe. I think these days though people just use whatever they like and are comfortable with interchangeably. 😊

Oodies are great but you wear pj trousers yes AussieMeg ? Yep, or tracky dacks. The Oodie only goes down to shin length, so you need to wear something warm on your legs. You can actually buy Oodie PJs as well.

I love a robe and always ask for one when I’m staying at a hotel. I have two at home—a thin one for summer and a fuzzy one for cold days. I always wear a robe when I come out of the shower or if I’m traveling, I will lounge in my robe before getting ready for dinner or going out for the evening.
