Just checked my email and got a notice from Disney + with some changes to new and existing customers.
We wanted to let you know that we are making some updates to our Subscriber Agreement.
These terms will apply as of January 25, 2024 for new subscribers. For prior and existing subscribers, like you, these terms will be effective beginning on March 14, 2024, unless you acknowledge an in-app notice of these changes earlier. Until then, the terms of our prior Subscriber Agreement apply.
We encourage you to review the updated Subscriber Agreement in full and save a copy for your files. Once effective, it will govern your use and enjoyment of your Disney+ or ESPN+ subscription. We are as committed as ever to making sure you have an enjoyable streaming experience. Please visit our Help Center for more information about your subscription.
We have highlighted some of the changes for your reference:
• We're adding terms governing gift cards, information regarding billing timing (including that it may vary), and an explanation of prorated charges that apply when you switch into a higher service tier.
• We're adding limitations on sharing your account outside of your household, and explaining how we may assess your compliance with these limitations.
• We're updating the arbitration agreement to be more specific about the procedures for resolving any disputes relating to your subscription and our services, and to offer you the choice to "opt out" of resolving disputes through arbitration.
Just wanted peas to know in case they share their account.

I’ve never understood why anyone thought password sharing outside of your household is ok. It seems like blatant cheating to me. I’m only surprised the services didn’t do something about it sooner.

Just a heads up for those who have Spectrum cable. Some Spectrum cable packages now include Disney+ at no additional charge. This is part of the Spectrum/Disney settlement from last September. I had no idea until I got a text from Spectrum last week. I signed up and then told my mom who still had not been notified. She was able to sign up as well. If you have Spectrum cable go here: www.spectrum.com/DisneyOnUs to see if you are eligible.

Here's the thing. I wouldnt share my password with someone outside my household, but when ds was in college, he was still part of my household and he used our streaming services. If Im at my mom's and we want to watch something on a streaming service that she doesnt have, I should be able to use my streaming login. If I am staying at a hotel, I should be able to use the service. Essentially, these services are tying the subscription to a building, not to the family that purchased it. I know there are people who abuse it, but if the phone of someone in the household is where the service is being accessed, that should be adequate to stop the abuse without impacting those of us who just want to be able to use the service that we pay for wherever we are.

You can do all those things - except the child who is living away from the household for months at a time.

From a practical standpoint, DS would activate his own service for several months in the fall, turn it off for the month he's home for Christmas, turn it back on for spring semester and back off for the summer. He would lose all of his viewing history as he's moving back and forth between the shared account and the family one. His legal address is still my house. It would be different if he got an apartment, stayed there all year and changed his address. Not a huge issue for me because after this semester he's moving back home and commuting....and because we cancelled Disney+ last fall to save $.

To me, household means you sleep in the same house. 🤷🏼♀️
Someone traveling for work, yeah. A college kid who lives somewhere else for the majority of the year, no.

I wonder how this will work for the Verizon customers? We get Disney+ free from Verizon. Dd is also on our cell plan but is in college.

What about the college student who doesn’t work and gets tuition, rent, grocery, and car money from their parents? Whom the parents claim on their taxes? I’d argue that that student is indeed part of the household. If the IRS says they are part of the household, that should be enough.

I got a similar email from Hulu. I figured once it went well for Netflix the others would follow suit. So far nothing for me has changed since I'm single but I will be super irritated if I'm prevented from using my subscriptions when I travel.

Maybe it is a regional offer. I think it may have been free at one point for us, but then it became $10/month. We cancelled because we weren’t watching it too much.

I would say the parents can pay for a second account if they are paying their other living expenses. When my daughter lives in my household, she can absolutely share my blow dryer. If she moves out, we have to buy a second one. 🤷🏼♀️

I was irritated about the college student thing at first but I do see the point other peas are making. Back in the day, parents’ cable TV didn’t go to college with the child. They had to get cable of their own. Same with internet service.
My oldest pays for her own stuff but the younger one is still in college. She’s chosen to just go without Netflix and I assume she’ll do the same for Disney. Kids her age mostly watch YouTube and TikTok anyway. Kind of like how I only had an antenna in college and would try to catch up on cable shows at my parents’ over the summer when reruns were on.

My dd is away during the academic year but comes home regularly for weekends, spends all summer at home along with 5 weeks between semesters plus Easter and September breaks. She works all summer to save some money but we essentially pay for everything - rent, food, utilities, tuition costs, books, petrol, phone, flights to/from home. Her official address is here at home and she spends just as much time here as she does there. She is considered to be a dependent for tax purposes as well as medical insurance etc. The only ones that consider her to be not part of our household are Netflix and now Disney+.

We are in same boat and I believe with Verizon, I don't think that even if multiple accounts have the plan with Disney+ means that can have multiple accounts with disney+.

I was worried about this with my college age kids and then realized it's fine - just like all the textbooks they never bought they can find pirated content faster than I can google. Seriously if the streaming services think this is their issue they have absolutely no idea what's going on.

Idk but I think if you’re on your parents car and health insurance and taxes, you should probably still qualify for their streaming services. 🤷♀️🙄

I would never share with somone not in my household but it sure sucks for my college kid. No Netflix and now no Disney Plus.
