Hi Peas! I'm not a joiner, definitely a lurker, have been part of the community prior to moving over here to proboards. This is the best place I know to come get actual, real opinions. So thank you.
My husband and I are moving to the greater Springfield area this summer for a job change. We are currently mid-Atlantic region, around 90 miles from DC. Definitely in the country. I have started the process of looking at housing. We are expecting to rent for a year while we get a feel for the area, and we are going next month for a week to do a soft orientation for his job, and also try to drive around to get a feel for the layout of things.
If you live in/around Springfield, or are familiar with the area, what are some of the areas we should look at? Where should we avoid? We have 3 sons, but only one is coming with us. He graduates high school in May, doesn't currently have plans for college, so we don't need to look for that.
Also, we have never moved like this, if you have any other general moving advice, that would be lovely. Thank you so much for reading!

I'm an ex-Missouri native... haven't lived there in a hot minute but just wanted to say good luck. Missouri is a pretty state. I do miss all the trees and lakes, so much to do there. I have been to Springfield but not enough to give you any advice. You are close to the Ozarks which is a lot of fun if you are into boating and that kind of stuff. Missouri is going to be a much slower place than DC area. If politics is your thing Missouri isn't high on my list for that... (it's not a game changer for me as I am not a political person.. but MO is not aligned with some of my viewpoints)
I probably go to KC once or twice a year to visit friends/family. I hope someone can help!

We will be moving our daughter to Springfield for school this August. it's home to Missouri State University, so a college town. From what we can tell, it's small (we're from KC) but the school means there's a lot to offer. It's not that far from KC, it's about a 3 hour drive. They have an excellent reputation for the arts, DD is an illustrator and artist. and they have excellent highway access, I found it very easy to navigate. Buc-cees just opened there, I have yet to go but may need to make a run soon. Spring is a beautiful time here, you're just missing our crappy negative temps and snow/ice season. And it's a beautiful area of the state, Branson/Table rock lake area gets a bad rap as it can be touristy, but there are places you can go that are off the beaten path and it really is lovely. If politics is your thing Missouri isn't high on my list for that... (it's not a game changer for me as I am not a political person.. but MO is not aligned with some of my viewpoints) Amen. I avoid politics where possible, and take solice in knowing I did NOT vote in our current administration. There are pockets of less conservative groups I'm betting Springfield will have some as college towns tend to be more liberal.

no idea on Missouri but general moving tips
purge, purge, purge some more - the less you have to move, the better. Remember that furniture and decor that works in your current place may not work in the new one.
label - if you already have a place picked out by the time you're packing - label with the destination room - label on at least one side and the top of each box
if the company isn't providing full service movers - free boxes are usually available at liquor stores and sometimes on Nextdoor/FB etc...from people unpacking from a move.
be sure to pack a box with the things you'll want right away and LABEL IT - last on the truck (or in your car) and first off. Bedding, coffee maker if you are a coffee person, toilet paper, stuff like that
if you're disassembling stuff - put the hardware in a LABELLED ziploc bag and tape to the item.
If you're having professional movers - set up a spot (a bathroom maybe) to put anything you don't want packed and moved - trash cans? the stuff you're taking in your car or on the plane?
If you're doing it all yourself - most moving companies and I think UHaul will hire out movers by the hour - well worth it if you have super heavy or awkward furniture and/or you need stuff to go up or downstairs. I think DS paid $100 or so to have 2 guys move several pieces of furniture up a flight of stairs into his flat.

I was in Springfield last Saturday - we go over maybe once a month or so. Sorry, can't comment on neighborhoods although Nixa and Ozark seem like nice little towns right outside of Springfield. We enjoy shows at the Gillioz and also Juanita Hammons Hall (part of the college). We also enjoy Jimm's Steakhouse and Lambert's for lunch/dinner. Good luck with your move!

We also enjoy Jimm's Steakhouse and Lambert's for lunch/dinner. Lamberts! I very much want to subject both of my teens to the throwed rolls. Plus, they have good food I hear.

I know very little --DH's nephew lives on South York, if that helps. I am sure he and his wife would never live in a sketchy neighborhood. She is a nurse at a local hospital, he travels for his job and she is home alone often. No children so I am sure the schools were never a consideration.

I live in Springfield. The south side of town is generally considered to be the better part of town and that is where a lot of the newer subdivisions are, if that what you are looking for. The north side is the poorer part of the city, but if you go north of I44 there are some very nice areas and they are less expensive. I live in a more central neighborhood - a safe one with older homes that have character and mature trees - if that’s what you’re interested in I would suggest either the Roundtree or University Heights neighborhood. Nixa, Ozark, Republic and Willard are all nice nearby towns. If you have any more specific questions feel free to ask here or send me a message.

I lived in Springfield from 2002-2008. Went to Missouri State and hung around until our DS was one. I was shocked by the lack of racial diversity, the abundant racism and the impact of conservative politics. I was an education major, so I did my student teaching in Springfield and substituted in the public school system.
We are originally from Austin so although it's Texas - I grew up in a very diverse setting and a liberal pocket. We decided we didn't want to raise our kids in Springfield and moved back to Texas.
That said, I loved the weather, the outdoorsy options, the theatre scene and the local restaurants. I just couldn't stomach the rest of it. We are actually heading there this summer because I loved Missouri State and our kids are looking at college in the next couple of years, so we are headed up for a visit.

I forgot to answer your actual question - we lived in the neighborhood just West of the univeristy and loved it. If you are looking for something more rural, I'd suggest looking at Rogersville, Nixa and Ozark. It's been awhile since we've lived there but our friends have migrated to those towns as they've started families and moved away from the college town vibe.

I was shocked by the lack of racial diversity, the abundant racism and the impact of conservative politics. I'm not shocked at this. It's more of a very old southern way of thinking type area. Very conservative. My sister's ex-husband's family is from that area and they are pretty bad. The ex was more liberal but as he got older and they divorced, he somehow got sucked back into this way of thinking. Missouri in general is conservative. But on the other hand, there are many good qualities... just the landscaping, things to do, humidity.. haha... and silly ole Lambert's. I totally forgot about the scrapbook store there.. it is a nice one if you are into that. Heck I hardly scrapbook anymore and I still stop there if I am nearby.. which isn't often.
