I was working in my flower beds and a realtor stop to inquire about selling our farm (when I was married). She had a buyer that was very interested. We also received many letters and postcards, too. We had people stop and ask about buying meat or animals even though there were no signs. Once, a Hispanic man knocked on our screen door and walked right in the house! He spoke Spanish, so it was difficult to understand him, but he was looking for work. I was alone with my two babies and was freaking out inside. I motioned towards our barn and said to check with my husband (who was at work and not there). As soon as he left the house, I locked the doors. He walked down towards the barn, but our husky was chained up near the door enjoying the sunshine, and his barking scared him off.

My brother was looking for a certain type of property in our town. He saw one that fit his parameters, and stopped to knock on the door to ask if the owner had ever thought of selling. The man said he wasn’t ready at that point, but he’d lost his wife and might be in a few years. My brother left his info, and stopped back a timer or two over the next few years. And that last time, the man was ready to sell. I think my brother probably paid more than he should have for it, given that it wasn’t on the open market. I just know that I will be enjoying the inground pool again this coming summer.

Oh no. We don't even knock on the doors of people we know without letting them know we are coming over first. In other places we've lived it happened semi-often. Once we had to tow my car to be worked on and my dad pulled in a random driveway that had a trailer and asked if we could borrow it...and they said yes! ha.
We don't even slow down or look at the houses on streets we aren't familiar with.

No but I’ve had people stop when I was cleaning out my garage to ask if things were for sale.

The thing is... I always wonder who the heck would just sell their house to someone who sends a postcard or leaves a flyer? lol This. I will admit I have bought three properties in NY and have used a realtor for only one. My husband is a contractor and I know enough paralegals that we can get the job done without the middle man. I closed on a vacant land sale myself. ANYONE who solicits me via mailer/knocking will never get my business.
