Funny thing.. I read this post back when it was first posted. And then just now -- 8 or so hours later -- someone posted about it on my neighborhood listserve, because a local news station is doing a report on it. Several people replied to say "wow, I hadn't heard about this." I thought to myself "well I have, thanks to the Peas."

That sounds like a disaster for employees too. I can’t imagine customers being happy that the prices are different from hour to hour, and I can imagine some of them taking it out on the poor schmo making minimum wage working the drive thru. We don’t go to Wendy’s very often to begin with because their prices are already among the highest for fast food. Seriously, to order a meal for the three of us it can easily be over $30 which is insane. This would make me want to stop there even less. Wendys pricing is why we only order the $5 biggie bag. If they start surge pricing, I will never set foot in there again- even if they eventually do away with it That's the only thing I will order now... and it is $6 in my area. I'm not going to pay surge pricing anywhere unless absolutely needed. Between groceries and eating out, it's not worth it anymore to enjoy anything. Life sucks.

Even without surge pricing, I think fast food hasn't been cheap for a while. Several on this board have mentioned that it costs so much more than a couple years ago. In fact, on this thread, littlemama said it is $30 to feed her family of three at Wendys already. That's nuts for fast food. That was crazy4scraps. I quoted her and said we only get the $5 biggie bags at Wendys, which for us would be $15+tax. To go anywhere else fast-food-y though is closer to $30. Wendy's prices for the regular combo meals are insane though I started a thread a month or so ago about this same thing. Before this surge pricing crap. We have cut down so much on eating out. I might go if I'm by myself, and I just order a sandwich, no fries. Maybe a drink depending what I have with me. And even then I order the cheapest one... or special. Kids and I will get a 5.00 pizza on Friday nights from Papa Murphys.. plain and simple. otherwise, I'm cooking or since the kids are old enough, we just make our own meals. We are hardly together at the same time.

Will my order be accurate? I went the other day and there were two errors on an order for three of us. This is the reason we stop less frequently. I seldom get orders without errors.

What the hell. So now my kid who is hungry at 7 after gymnastics is going to pay more because of the time she needs to eat? Glad I’ve pretty much cut out fast food from our diets. I won’t order fast food from a place that doesn’t employ real people. Pretty much the only fast food we get is in n out and Wendy’s. Soon only in n out will be the option. I would think with surge pricing it might cost less to be eating later. It would likely affect people stopping for food on their way home from work more when there is higher demand. It will depend on the number of people who are there at certain times tho. So, dinner time and lunch time will probably cost more. Not sure what “time” those occur or will be considered. Maybe have to eat outside of those peak times? No matter what- I do know it will curb our grabbing dinner on the way home.

Last time we went they had 2 remaining at $5, and then some at $6 and maybe $7?. We like the Junior Bacon Cheeseburger and that is a $5 one (at least it was a month ago). But they day they start surge pricing will be the end of that. I wont support a restaursnt that does that.

So, when it’s busier and you have to wait longer you will have to pay more for the opportunity to do so? Yep. Stupid thing to do.

My grandson had order a combo meal in medium size. When I got to the window to receive the food, the gal handed me a drink and it was very little. I asked her, is this a medium. She said yes, that they had changed all their drink sizes and that was now a medium. I told her, wow, I bet a lot of people are going to be unhappy and she said they have had tons of people drive off and not take their food. I figured the must have offered drinks before taking the payment or someone disputed a charge on their credit card. A lot of fast food restaurants near me have greatly reduced the size of their sodas. A small is now smaller than the old, 'value size'. And soda prices have gone up too -- a 'large' soda is around $3.50. (McD's soda prices have gone up, but they are still the lowest at $1.69 for any size.)

I don't eat at Wendy's anyway other than maybe a chili once a year since there's one right next to where I have to do some annual training. This sounds like it's been free publicity and also like a ridiculously bad idea.
But maybe a way to steer people towards using a mobile app to "lock in" a best price at peak times of day and I think they were one of the restaurants piloting automated service in some locations (could be wrong about that and I don't feel like googling) so that could be another tie-in.
Nobody cares about Wendy's enough to pay premium prices when they're already stuck waiting in line.

I don’t like Wendy’s lunch or dinner food, but I do like their chicken honey butter biscuit. I don’t get it often. Mostly when on road trips, but if they follow through with this I won’t be going there again. I agree with others, lots of restaurants have lunch specials, but I don’t view that as the same thing.

Wendy's prices for the regular combo meals are insane though Yup, 100% this. We have one between home and school. My kid used to have this chocolate ice cream flavored toothpaste that smelled EXACTLY like a Wendy’s chocolate frosty. Smelling that toothpaste every night was making me crave a chocolate frosty in a bad way. Being the enabler I am, maybe a year and a half or so ago DD and I went there to get frostys and she had to try a Baconator because the kid loooooves her bacon. Yeah, it’s a tasty burger but even if you’re getting the junior size with fries and a frosty (which is an upcharge over a soda, but if you’re going to Wendy’s it’s almost required to get one) it comes at a hefty price. If we go with DH along he would get the regular sized burger meal which is even more. Arby’s is spendy too. If we’re going to spend that much on fast food we would much rather get Canes. At McDonald’s it’s easy for us to skip the drinks and just have the water we always have with us in the car so they typically do some kind of BOGO deal, I get a McChicken, we all get fries, skip the drinks and the three of us are usually eating for under $20.

I think Wendy's really hurt themselves with this move. I rarely get any fast food, but Wendy's would be last on my list now.

I watched a TikTok this morning where a man said he and his wife went to Taco Bell and each had a normal sized meal and a drink; their bill was $32 dollars. $32. For Taco Bell.

The best thing we as consumers could do would be to only eat there at non-surge pricing times to send a message. I guess that would change their surge times. I was thinking the same thing, the surge times would just change. The best thing we can do is not eat there at all. And I did read an article recently that mentioned a couple of fast food places that were starting to see dips in sales because more people are eating at home. Do you know how nice of a meal we can have at home for $30? Exactly. If I buy steak on sale, our family of 3 will have an awesome dinner for $30 (6 to 8 ounce steak, baked potato, veggie, and salad). Ever since we got our Blackstone griddle, steaks at home taste just as good as the ones in a restaurant.

Fast food prices are out of hand. I ordered and 8-count grilled nuggets and a large diet coke from Chick-fil-a last week and my total was just under $9! I was shocked (and super annoyed!). An 8-count grilled nuggets is only 2-3 ounces of chicken! Our family of six stopped at CFA on our last road trip and our bill was $74 and change. Way, WAY too much for six people.

I don’t mind that Arby’s has a few hours in the afternoon when prices are cheaper. But the way Wendy’s is presenting it really seems to be a turn off. Not only are they advertising that they will raise prices during certain hours (as opposed to the focus being on “specials” during off peak hours) but it also seems like it will be random. If I go out to eat I want to know what I am paying ahead of time.

We don’t eat fast food very often, only when we take the grands on an outing.
The older ones can go by themselves and they have been tell us about the prices. The Burger King here in our town has closed down. Part of what is making worse is here in California they pasted a law that fast food workers must be paid at least $20.00 an hour. Guess who that gets passed on to? I wished I had paid better attention to economic when I was in school, this won’t even help the fast food workers, all the costs will go up wherever they choose to eat.
We haven’t been eating out at all because of the outrageous prices. I know there are a lot of things that go into the rising prices in restaurants, but we aren’t willing to absorb these costs especially in chain restaurants.

Now there is a discussion that there will be discounts during off hours... 😊
Groceries have had a 25% markup in the last few years and that is all on the grocery stores!! Not the government..

The economic studies done have all shown that the impact on prices of wage raises is minimal, if at all. It’s been a while since I’ve read one but the last one I saw was looking at $15/hour wages and the price impact was something like 10 cents increase per item, and im thinking it was lower. A lot of areas were already paying those wages simply to be able to hire employees

Send a message to Corporate office. There is a grocery chain here in Canada that changed the discount on some foods. They got push back from customers and then again changed the policy. Good idea! I plan on doing just that. Once this goes into effect, I won't be going there again. I'm one of those people that say that and then actually follow through. ETA-I couldn't easily find a corporate email, though the # is on their site. I just went to Insta and messaged them.

It is good to let them know how you feel and what you will do. Many years ago I went into the washroom of a major department store here. It was filthy, needed a paint job and all but one of stall doors were broken or not there. I spoke wit( a salesperson and she said the Manager was not concerned as he said the customers don’t spend money in the washroom. Enough said. Head of the company at the time was a female. I sent a carefully worded e-mail to. Head Office. They sent me a fifty dollar gift certificate and suggested I check the store within a month. I went back a month later and there were big changes in the washroom and clean ever since.

We can go to a counter service place like Jason’s or Rosa’s for that price.
