That there are not two actors named Ralph Fiennes and Ray Fines. 🤣🤣🤣 This comes as a most shocking revelation. I was watching a show about Lord Somebody and his motor car collection and his sex scandals, and they kept mentioning his son Rafe but it is spelled Ralph and I fell down a rabbit hole of pronunciations.
Also, the estate is called Beaulieu, which most in this country would probably guess is called "BO-lew" but is actually pronounced BYOO-lee. Like Bueller.

Wait. Are you saying some people pronounce Ralph like Ray? I’ve never heard that.

Wait. Are you saying some people pronounce Ralph like Ray? I’ve never heard that. Rafe, but I never realized. You'd think I would have put two and two together but I never thought much about it beyond one of them being Voldemort. I guess I realized it's Ralph who is Voldemort but I didn't know it's pronounced Rafe! Or that that is an acceptable traditional British pronunciation!

Huh, I’m apparently sitting next to you on that bench. I guess I’ve never heard his name pronounced before, in a way I attached to him, or it would have stood out to me. I also don’t remember hearing about a Rafe Fiennes either.

I only knew because I heard someone on tv say his name. Is that a common pronunciation of Ralph in the UK? I am curious.

I did know the correct pronunciation of his name, I have heard it many times. If I'd not heard it pronounced, I would definitely have pronounced it as Ralph (rhymes with shelf) Fines.
ETA: I would have pronounced Beaulieu as "Bo-lew" as well.

Yep its pronounced Ray-f Fines (Ralph Fiennes). I'd say it's not a common pronunciation, more old fashioned or upper class and when he's on talk shows now the host will often say Ralph. Ralph is, ime, the more usual pronunciation for others of that name. Beaulieu - yes, B-you-lee. Don't you just love it!

Hang on...Ralph rhymes with shelf? I bloody well knew someone would pick me up on that, but I didn't think it would be a Brit! I tried to think of a better rhyming word, but my brain wasn't working. I should have said Ralph (rhymes with Alf). But yeah, in my accent, Ralph and Alf rhyme with shelf and elf. Which I guess is weird, seeing that Aaron and Erin sound nothing alike!

I think the only reason I knew that his name was pronounced like that was because I was watching something about the movie Quiz Show. (Yes, I know he was in Harry Potter, but I'm not an HP fan.)

I did know it was pronounced like Ray-f as I've been a fan for a while.
Beaulieu I knew because I read a book about the area and they included the pronunciation otherwise I would have said it the way it looks to an American.

I have long been familiar with the pronunciation only bc this guy has been on my laminated list since I saw Schindler's List. My husband calls him the traditional Ralph just to annoy me!
I just learned a new one yesterday for Boise. I was listening to an audio book, and the narrator kept pronouncing it "Boy-see" instead of "Boy-zee". I googled and apparently all the locals say "Boy-see".

I'll always think of him as Ray Fines in future That's not a word I've ever said out loud so I'm not sure what would come out of my mouth!

Beaulieu is one of our favorite places to visit - I was just there over Thanksgiving. Needless to say, there is no mention of a scandal at Beaulieu. I know of Beaulieu because of wellway, and how to pronounce it because of RedSquirrelUK! The motor museum is FABULOUS! There are the ruins of an old Abbey, that is always a treat to read about and explore and the manor house was used as a spy school during WWII. Many notable spies came thru that school, to include several very famous women!

I would pronounce Beaulieu ‘bow-lyuh’ based on what I learned in French class. 🤓 But I get that the pronunciation of foreign words often becomes anglicized.

When I lived in England we went to visit Belvoir Castle, the seat of the Duke of Rutland. No idea how they turned the pronunciation of Belvoir (bel-vwar) into beaver. 🤔
Same with the name Beauchamp (bo-shom) into beach-um.
I lived in Beaufort (bo-furt) NC but have never been to Beaufort (byoo-furt) SC.
I also lived in Augusta GA where the suburban city of Martinez GA is pronounced MARTIN-ez. The t is not really pronounced, it acts more as a glottal stop.

I have known a couple people with the last name Beaver. I wonder if it's just a bastardized spelling? Unless you're Native American, I guess Beaver wouldn't make much sense as a family name since they're a New World animal unless your family chose it after moving here. At least I think they are...like buffalo and raccoons.

Beavers are starting to be re-introduced in the UK after being hunted to extinction here centuries ago and I'm pretty sure there are some family crests from the Middle Ages with beavers on. I think you are correct with it being a bastardized spelling/pronunciation. The record keepers at those times would go on what they thought they heard. How about these : Featherstonehaugh is pronounced Fanshaw. Cholmondeley is pronounced Chumly.

I'm a fairly recent "Rayf"/Ralph realizer, but my more recently recent "what?!" moment was when I realized that "Sin-gin" is a fancy way of saying St.John ... and that I only tumbled to because I was watching a show on Acorn or BritBox with the subtitles turned on
