My 18 yr old nephew lives with his father in Canadian. They lost their house today in that huge wildfire. I am so so sorry for their loss. Happy they are safe but I am sure the devastation, sadness, fear and loss are immense. Sending nothing but healing thoughts their way.

So now a new worry is that the fire is on the outskirts of Pantex -- a national nuclear facility. They wont say *exactly* how close the fire is, but they've quit evacuating people and are now preparing as much as they can for the fire. That particular fire is 0% contained.

Please pray for the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. We have wildfires that are burning out of control. At the time I write this, there are over 200,000+ acres burning and there is zero containment. Fires have begun to burn in towns and entire counties are being evacuated. The fires are coming so quickly that some cannot get out of their way and are being told to just find an empty parking lot that has nothing that can burn (like cars or buildings) around it, and to wait it out there. I honestly cannot imagine how scary this is for them. One of the towns that was hit with a massive tornado this past year is now being threatened to burn. Our winds are blowing 40-45mph sustained wind with gusts expected over 65mph. One fire alone is over 90 miles wide. This is all so very, very bad for our area. ______ Edited: one fire is over 250,000 acres now. Zero containment. One tiny town about 25 miles from me is said to have lost 40 homes so far. Edit #2: So now a new worry is that the fire is on the outskirts of Pantex -- a national nuclear facility. They wont say *exactly* how close the fire is, but they've quit evacuating people and are now preparing as much as they can for the fire. That particular fire is 0% contained. We live about an hour from the Fritch fire. We were at a basketball game in Amarillo this evening and when the wind switched directions we could smell the smoke while in the basketball gym. On our way home we could see the orange glow in the sky from the fire to the east of us. I have been praying all day for everyone that is going through this.

I’m so sorry. 😞 I hope everyone gets out safely. We’ve dealt with horrible wildfires here in western Canada and I read that last year’s fires are still smoldering under the snow. So our spring could be horrendous. Yes, saw smoke from West Kelowna the other day and had that moment of oh no. Fire mitigation burn but still felt panicked. I’m so sorry to see threads like this so early in the season. Fire is terrifying, I’m hoping everyone stays safe.

Awful. I’m so sorry. We’re very familiar with this phenomenon in California, but it doesn't usually happen in the dead of winter. Good luck to all in the fire’s path.
My parents lost their home (and some neighbors’ lives) to an urban wildfire in 1991. It’s just things. It’s the people caught in the fires that we really need to worry about.
Nuclear reactor … now that’s a scary situation. Be careful out there.

ABC news is showing it now. They just said that some town in Texas has been asked to shelter in place. How the heck does one shelter in place from a fire? I was just thinking that and got goosebumps. I think that's what they told the people of Maui, and then they became trapped

Hoping these fires can be contained, that would be so scary! Even way up here I saw on the weather the other day that there are burning bans right now and I thought that was really weird for this time of year.

Some friends had their ranch burn a few years ago in SW Kansas. When I lived down that way I never remember wildfires. Now the fire departments all have rangeland fire units. Even up into more west central Kansas.
It's so scary!

I saw on the news last night about a fast fire just south of us air force academy in colorado springs.. air people evacuated. so weird for february. if it is a brush fire.. an empty lot is a good idea if you can't anywhere else. fire needs fuel.. and a burned area or a concrete lot.. or even a dirt lot can work to save you. Today's snowstorm hopefully knocked that out. There was also one south of me on base. Hoping you guys get some moisture soon.

I'm adding my prayers that everyone stays safe.
The weather is crazy this year. We have had nearly no snow here NW of Minneapolis. It's 2 degrees F now, but expected to be 68 on Sunday! I worry about a fire in the very dry wetlands behind my home.

May everyone in harms way remain safe. As Lucy shared, we are used to fires here in California and have experience with how rapidly they can spread. I was a "veteran" of evacuating due to wildfires (I'm super sensitive to smoke so evacuate sooner than most) but the Thomas Fire in Dec 2017 shocked me when it moved 15 MILES to the west, toward us, in one night. The nuclear reactor adds an additional layer of terror. Please trust your gut and get out if/when you feel like you should. Even if there's just a wee bit of that feeling. Far better to overreact than to wait too long. I haven't checked in on the status of the fires yet today. lucyg - I don't think I knew that your parents lost their home in that horrific wildfire in the Oakland Hills. So glad they made it out! xo

Dad had taken my kids out for the day, but stepmom wasn’t feeling well, so she’d stayed home. No one had phones back then, and it took hours before we knew if she was dead or alive. Really frightening time.

Here's the Wednesday AM update:
The biggest fire is still burning. 500,000 acres and still zero containment. Evacuations got within 5 miles of my oldest son's house but then they were able to keep it from hitting the city. I live across town and another fire had our neighborhood filled with smoke that I would have sworn it was in our neighborhood, but nope. It turned a little and went to another area of open fields. Yay. They did end up evacuating a bunch of my city's residents but last I heard they were clear to go home. Today we should see some improvement --- the temps will only be in the 50s vs 80s that we had yesterday and the winds should be calmer. I also said that someone is sending in huge fire planes to dump water so Im hopeful.
It was a long night at my house. Because of DH's job, they were called to open up a recently closed rehab/nursing home to help nursing home evacuees have somewhere to go. Im just so thankful they were able to get in online and up and running (and still safe) to help, even if it meant DH came home around 3am. And poor Scouty --- he is just an anxious mess. He was pacing and he kept going to the front door and pawing at the door, while crying. I think he knew something was wrong and wanted us to leave. I finally gave him CBD doggy treats and got him to bed.
Of course, I am so thankful that that's all we had to deal with. Others have lost homes (no word on how many, but some are thinking north of 100 homes), ranchers have lost their livestock, etc. They don't think anyone has died though so that's a big relief.

To be clear, Pantex is not a nuclear power plant. It is a nuclear weapons facility that mainly dismantles weapons and stores plutonium. DH worked there for many years.
My MIL is west of Amarillo in Bushland. Nothing seems to be coming close there, thank goodness!
It's such a windy place, so hoping the wind speeds/gusts hold to the forecast.

That the 'get to an empty parking lot and pray nothing catches fire around you' part. Wow. "Shelter in place" to me says "stay where you are and you'll be safe". Not sure that applies to being in the middle of a parking lot with fire raging all around you. An underground tornado shelter would be another safe place (or so I think).
