Awful. I’m so sorry. We’re very familiar with this phenomenon in California, but it doesn't usually happen in the dead of winter. Good luck to all in the fire’s path. My parents lost their home (and some neighbors’ lives) to an urban wildfire in 1991. It’s just things. It’s the people caught in the fires that we really need to worry about. Nuclear reactor … now that’s a scary situation. Be careful out there. Oakland fire? Your family was so lucky with that fire to all get out alive. We have a friend who lost his house in that, but fortunately he and his wife were both at work. There was nothing left, even the fireproof save was destroyed.

How scary and horrible! Wild fires are terrifying. I hope they can be contained and you are safe.

Yes, the Oakland Hills fire. 25 people killed, 3500 homes burned, in one day. A police officer my husband was working with that day was killed about a block from my parents’ house, trying to get a group of women out. Not out of a house, but out of the neighborhood. They all died. That fire left a scar that will never go away.

It was probably 20 years before hearing fire engine sirens didn't upset me. mom - Still worried about all of ya'll up there and keeping you in my prayers. Thank you for taking the time to keep us updated.

Thanks for the update, mom. I was worried about you and your family. Wild fires are terrifying and move so fast and unpredictably. Sounds like if they have water bombers out they may be able to contain/control them now?

On a news clip I saw some horses running from the fire. I felt so bad for them, and any other animals in danger.

3:30 Wednesday update --- We are still ok. There are several fires going, but the biggest one today has burned almost 800,000. acres and is now 3% contained. This particular fire is the 2nd largest fire in Texas history but should be the largest fire in Texas history by tomorrow am. It is burning the equivalency of two entire full length football fields, PER SECOND. I saw one online article that said this fire (the Smokehouse Creek fire) is larger than the city of Houston. If I can find the article again, I will link it. Thankfully, today the winds have been calm and that's helped a lot. Tomorrow am we have some snow/rain in the morning, so fingers crossed we get it.

I saw this yesterday while searching for news of tornadoes by us. My heart goes out to everyone who may be in the line of danger or who has lost their homes.

mom thinking of you this morning. Crisis teams and funds are already being prepped here in Plano and elsewhere. As ugly as the state is politically, there are still volunteers with good hearts ready to help. lucyg I remember watching from Ft Mason/Marina as the smoke rose and the sky became dark. I’d come in a day ahead to prep for the work week, and basically had no communication what was happening in real time. I’ve seen big grass fires and tornados first hand, but nothing as ominous as that. I can’t imagine the memories for those involved, I’m sorry.

mom how are you doing? Hope you and yours are somewhere safe away from any fire!!! We are good. Thanks for asking! Yesterday we got a good break -- it snowed and that helped a bunch. But today we are back to 70 degree weather + wind, so I am hoping we dont get a repeat of fires but I will be surprised if we don't. Conditions are too favorable for them. Last I saw (yesterday evening) the largest fire had merged with another fire and they only had 5% contained. There has been a second fatality also.

Well the fire has been going 8 days now. And it's still burning.
The largest of the fires is only 32% contained and has burned over 1,059,570 acres so far. 3 deaths. The fire itself has burned the opposite direction than towards my house, so I am thankful for that. I read that on any given day -- depending on what other fires have started --- there are 75-100 engines from all over fighting the fires, as well as planes dumping water from our lake.
The damage is horrific. The small town that is directly in its path has lost most of their homes or atleast most have had some sort of damage. Apparently many didnt have any sort of insurance either. A news article was saying that they are predicting around 60-75% of local cattle have died -- which is bad on its own. But my area provides about 85% of the state of Texas beef. So it's a huge loss for so many.
Anyway, just thought I would update everyone.

Wow. I hadn’t seen information on this snd was wondering about it earlier today. So sad about 3 deaths and people losing their homes and for the loss of cattle. That fire is huge. So incredibly huge. It’s hard to imagine.
