Were there other people to witness what happened? What about the person burping the baby? Who is investigating? Was this reported by a doctor? Were photos taken of the injury?

There is a new thing called child abuse pediatricians.. This has been discussed here sometime in the past. Yes they are a thing.. not always a good thing. Keep a list of all the people who were present now, before they forget details!!
Do not panic!

There are an awful lot of unanswered questions here. Yes, everyone knows hitting the forehead on a mantel would cause a linear bruise.
But why was a 5 week old baby's head allowed to connect with a mantel and not being guarded by the adult? Why, if you're burping a baby, would you be anywhere near that close to a hard surface and letting a 5 week old's head flop onto a mantel?
Rather than doing research via Tiktok videos (? Who are these videos intended for, anyway? The police? The parents? DCFS?) I think other questions should be being asked and answered. Are these pea-sourced tiktok videos going to make some kind of difference in the outcome to the baby?
This is all pretty weird.
ETA you're saying the adult's JAW caused a bruise by being grazed? And the doctor said it was a skull fracture but then it wasn't? So now there is no investigation but yet another doctor said this is abuse? So there is no investigation, just an accusation? What would an accusation matter if it's not true (!) and there is no investigation? Too many holes in this one.
Mom needs a baby camera, nanny cam, whatever it takes but I wouldn't leave my baby with that mystery "friend" again.
I'm bowing out...I hope the baby is ok and being cared for properly.

Im confused. Why would the mom be accused of neglect? Was there a reason she should not have left her baby with that other relative?

I guess I was just not understanding how grazing a jaw could lead to an accusation of abuse or a linear bruise.

Were there other people to witness what happened? No but tge morning before she went to the hospital she texted relative to adk if baby might have bonked her head snd relative texted back yes. What about the person burping the baby? She said it was her except the hodpital never called her or followed up even though they said they would because they diagnosed s skull fracture. Who is investigating? No one - doctor said it is abuse and no one investigated - dr just wrote a report and no one even looked at text message. Was this reported by a doctor? Yes because she reports any bruise as child abuse and tgry diagnosed a skull fracture which turned out to be a mistske. Were photos taken of the injury? Yes and it shoes a very light band aid shape bruise Ok, first off if the child had a mark why didn’t the relative mention it to the mother? If it resulted in a skull fracture and a mark they should have told the parent. I sure wouldn’t leave my baby in care of this person again. Someone has to be investigating if she is being accused. Or is she being charged? Doctors have to report suspicious injuries, they are mandatory reporters. Was it a skull fracture? With the typo of tgry I am not sure what you meant to say. I think the best thing your friend can do is DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT.

Light bruise showed up next morning. No investigation occurred because a skull fracture was diagnosed and a regular ER doctor said there is not enough force from a burping incident for there to be a fracture. After they realized a mistake had been made, no one contacted relative because according to the child abuse pediatrician, ANY bruise on any bsby under 6 months is child abuse. Seriously If there is a skull fracture, there will be an investigation (as there should be). Your friend needs to document and hire an attorney. Edited: I've read and re-read and I cannot follow this enough to know if there is a fracture or not. Either way, she needs to document and get ready for battle. If they are claiming child abuse or neglect, and investigation will happen.

When I practiced as an attorney I worked a lot with CPS cases and I can’t follow your story.
You said everything you said in the OP and now you’re saying no investigation occurred.
What?

SeriouslyI don't think it "is" child abuse, but I think a guideline requiring medical staff to SUSPECT and potentially report it, is a good thing. Babies can't tell anyone what happened, and any unwitnessed incident that causing bruising to a baby that young who can't go anywhere on their own, should be fully investigated. All caregivers should be suspected and monitored in a situation like this...and you should not just automatically assume the person is innocent because you know them, unless you were in the room and saw the incident occur with your own eyes.

That is what captured my attention.
