I've never had to buy a washer. When dh and I got together, he already had one. We had that until about 9 years ago, when we moved into this house, we moved fil's washer in and have been using that. Well it needs to be replaced. So I am seeing you can get an agitator (traditional option) or one with an impeller. I have read the differences. Would like to hear any of ya'lls thoughts on one vs the other.
ETA - they all say they are high efficiency. Does that mean I have to use HE detergent? Does regular work as well?

High efficiency does not mean you have to use the HE detergent.
Our son bought a washer with no agitator. We were able to watch and see a particular pair of pants as the moved in the tub. The pants went under the water and back up as the washer went through the cycle.

I went back to an agitator last year and have zero regrets. Clothes are so much cleaner. And the tub fills with exactly the water level you choose.
I chose a big enough tub that I can wash my queen bedding at once then the comforter.
I am able to pause, unlock lid, and add in something.

Oh and I use Gain. It is HE compatible. That is what you need. An HE compatible detergent.

If you get one without an agitator, you are still supposed to load it as if it had one, leaving a hole in the middle. Many people dont do that and have issues. (I dont do it, even thiugh I know I should lol)
Our LG top loader, no agitator has buttons for extra water and extra rinse, which we use for every load. Love our LGs!

We bought a new washer about six months ago and went with no agitator. I was hesitant but I really like it. We’ve had no issues, clothes come out just as clean. I feel like it’s easier on the clothes as well.

I had (still have it) an LG without an agitator. It does not get clothes that clean. If you have normal laundry that would come clean with a 'swish' - then probably OK. I have dirty greasy ranchy poopy laundry. The clothes would come out with actual dirt still on them. I did load it right too.
I bought a Speed Queen old school machine. That machine gets clothes CLEAN! It doesn't take hours to do a load. It never goes off balance (YES! I loaded it right!) and I can wash odd things it in that the agitatorless machine can't handle.
I recommend the Speed Queen machine with an agitator. Made in the USA also!

Mine has a removable agitator so you can use it either way!

I agree with Iowgirl—my Samsung without the agitator just doesn’t get things as clean as other machines. The other day I did a light load with two shirts on the delicate cycle and parts of them were still dry when I pulled them out. Also check the depth. My machine will easily handle a king sized comforter, but I can’t reach the bottom of it to get out the everyday laundry. The unmentionables load takes forever to unload as I pull a sock or two out at a time with my grabber-thingy.

I have a new LG no agitator. When it needs replaced, I won't buy another without an agitator. I also won't buy a front loader either. BTDT!

I just bought a new washer and dryer a couple weeks ago. I read up on pros and cons before I went shopping. I considered the Whirlpool with the removable agitator. My local appliance store does not sell top loaders with impellers only, although they do carry the Whirlpool removable agitator models.
They also do not sell Samsung. One main reason is there is no one to service them. This store does their own service for most brands, which is why I buy there. Plus they have their own installers who work just for them, and their installers will turn the gas back on after installation if you have a gas dryer, as I do.
I bought Speed Queen, the series 7 - 7 year warrantee on the washer. Will wash with truly hot water (most don’t even when it says hot for that cycle). It’s not a huge capacity - but it’s the exact same cubic feet capacity as my 24-year-old KitchenAid that I replaced. And yes, it’s a top-loader with agitator.
edit - yes, you need an HE compatible detergent.

Do they even sell that many non HE detergents any more. I buy the same thing over and over so not sure what's out there.

I got a top loader washer in July without agitator, can't remember brand, and I used my favorite detergent, Tide Free and gentle in powder form in this new washer. Not too much to give residue on the sides and cleaned clothes as great as my old Sears brand with agitator. Worked great, but now discontinued making this detergent and I don't think the liquid Tide free and gentle does didly squat for cleaning and don't want to use the pods. So I'm thinking that it's also the detergent and agitator combo that works. I'm thinking about putting in some oxyclean. I react to the regular Tide powder, so I'm not sure what to try.

It’s not a huge capacity - but it’s the exact same cubic feet capacity as my 24-year-old KitchenAid that I replaced. And yes, it’s a top-loader with agitator. THIS! Hot water! I need HOT water when I wash. My HE LG machine would never give me truly hot water. I had to actually stand there and turn off the cold water fill tap to force hot water into my HE LG and also trick it into thinking there was a heavier load to get more water in it. I also can't soak in my LG HE machine. It has a soak cycle, but it is like 20 minutes and then it drains. What! I've got weird funky water that turns white dingy orange after a while, so once in a while I do a long hot soak with Iron Out, so I want it to soak an hour at least. Plus - if you have ever gotten into "Laundry Stripping" - where they do a deep soak in bathtubs, etc. to strip out bed sheets and other items, you can do that in your washing machine if it can soak as long as you want it to. I do "Strips" on summer tshirts, bed linens, etc. I use an enzyme cleaner to get that funk out and really hot water. * I know there are better HE machines out there now, than that beast I have. And I realize most people don't have the nasty laundry that I have! LOL

Thank you all that responded. I went with the best of both worlds, I guess . I got a Whirlpool that is a 2 in 1 agitator and impeller. I can remove the agitator and have an impeller if wanted or needed. Since this was not in our plan/budget, I needed to get one that was good but also not $$$$. This one was on sale and will be delivered tomorrow.

I LOVE having one with no agitator. I never load my clothes with a hole in the middle, I do use HE detergent (the big tub from Costco works), and my clothes are always clean.
